The Spear of Justice
♯
The declaration of war by Kaoru Saeki on the first day of the Second Stage—《Rate Radar》.
Its impact exploded across STOC and Island Tube—well, of course it did. Right now, I, Shinohara Hiroto, am undeniably the most-watched player on the island. When “cheating” suspicions surface about a guy like me, everyone’s bound to want to talk about it.
‘Guess Shinohara really was cheating, huh.’ ‘《Hexagram》 stepping in is a big deal—maybe even Shinohara’s done for.’ ‘I’m not so sure, though. They haven’t shown any real proof yet.’ ‘Whatever, Kaoru-sama’s seriously cool!’
…Opinions varied, as you’d expect.
For now, since 《Hexagram》 hasn’t presented concrete evidence, it’s still just suspicion. But Saeki’s oddly convincing delivery and their clear past record mean the tide’s turning against me pretty hard.
All that made 《SFIA (Sufia)》 a lot messier, but at least the Second Stage—《Rate Radar》—wrapped up smoothly without further chaos. I hit the victory condition at noon on day one, Shirayuki about two hours later. The final tally of 10,000 qualifiers was reached early on day three. Seems we both snagged advantages with plenty of room to spare.
“Hm…”
And now—a few hours after 《Rate Radar》 ended—Shirayuki and I were at home, hunched over a terminal in the living room, carefully digesting the Third Stage rules.
The massive event had finally narrowed to 10,000 players. But 《SFIA (Sufia)》’s real game starts here. Unlike the Second Stage, where 10% of 100,000 could pass, the Third Stage caps at exactly 100 qualifiers—a 1% pass rate. Even high-rankers can’t breeze through that.
Plus, the 《Duel (Game)》 itself is a bit of a pain—namely:
【《SFIA》 Third Stage—《Blank Code》】
【Each player is assigned a “pass” for clearing the Third Stage—a four-digit number. Identifying this pass is the condition for advancing to the Semifinal.】
【The info (code) to identify the pass is split digit-by-digit: 1st Digit Info (First Code), 2nd Digit Info (Second Code), 3rd Digit Info (Third Code), and 4th Digit Info (Last Code). Each is entrusted to five randomly selected players, totaling twenty code-holders. These players are chosen randomly, except they’re “not from your district” and “in a similar rank bracket.” Conversely, every player holds twenty pieces of others’ info (codes).】
【Thus, to identify your pass, you must negotiate with players holding your codes (displayed as unique IDs on your terminal) and get them to hand it over. You could verbally share a code’s number, but there’s no guarantee it’s true. Typically, it’s an “exchange”—trading codes both players hold.】
【Exchanges are limited to twice per hour. Same-district trades are allowed.】
【《Blank Code》 is quota-based, ending forcibly once 100 players identify their passes. If the quota isn’t met by 5:00 PM, it pauses and resumes at 9:00 AM the next day. Pass entry can be attempted anytime, but a wrong guess means instant elimination. The first four to clear early gain a Semifinal advantage.】
【《Blank Code》 includes “pt” to balance code value in exchanges. Pt can only be traded via exchanges, and once per 《Duel (Game)》, a player can spend 10pt to reveal one digit of their own info. Starting pt is 3 across the board, but Second Stage top qualifiers get 7pt.】
【All info (codes) held by cleared or eliminated players vanish.】
【Only one ability may be registered. Due to the 《Duel (Game)》’s nature, probability-manipulating abilities are banned entirely.】
…That’s the deal.
“Ugh… Yeah, this is crazy tough.”
“…Indeed.”
Shirayuki and I sighed in unison after rereading the rules. We’d skimmed them right after they dropped, but even with time, our take didn’t change. 《SFIA (Sufia)》 Third Stage—《Blank Code》. This 《Duel (Game)》 is trickier than it looks.
Well—the basic rules alone aren’t that complex. Boil it down, and it’s just “guess your four-digit pass.” Each digit’s info is scattered among other districts’ players, so you trade to get it. Add in whether abilities come into play, and that’s about it.
“But there’s no way it’ll come together smoothly, right? If I’ve got their code too, maybe they’d nod, but otherwise, no dice. I’d have to offer multiple codes or grab trade bait from someone else… and that could turn into a wild goose chase. Could be stuck looping until I hit an Eimei player.”
“True. There’s the pt factor—we could use it to fill gaps—but even then, it won’t go smoothly. We could get lowballed hard.”
“Yeah. And dragging it out like that, bam—100 clear, game over. …Plus, forcing it with 《The Company》’s power is tricky this time.”
“Exactly, Master. We could hack 《Blank Code》’s server to pull your pass directly, but with probability abilities banned, we can’t pass it off as a ‘lucky guess.’ And with 《Hexagram》’s situation, flashy moves might be risky.”
Shirayuki spoke in her calm tone. …I don’t know how effective 《Hexagram》’s “watch” really is, but we can’t ignore it. At minimum, we need a legit-looking clear process.
That makes the current climate a pain. As a (fake) 7-Star, I’m already a “don’t-let-him-advance” target, and 《Hexagram》’s accusations have made it worse. Trades will be harder for me than most.
“Hm… So, for now, we keep 《The Company》’s support low-key. It’s a bit rough, but getting extra suspicion would ruin everything.”
“Agreed… Then I’ll start by making a list mapping IDs to players. Since it’s similar-rank players, many might be your acquaintances, Master. Knowing who they are ahead of time should help strategize.”
“…Oh, right. Yeah, that’d keep it subtle enough.”
I gave Shirayuki a small nod.
Honestly—even if 《Hexagram》’s accusations sway people against me, high-rankers wouldn’t prioritize personal grudges over beneficial trades. Especially if I know their personality or background.
“Still, that alone leaves me uneasy… I mean, this 《Duel (Game)》 doesn’t feel like a solo job. Unless the district cooperates to cycle codes smartly, trades won’t happen worth a damn.”
“You might be right. One player only holds twenty codes, but if Eimei pools them, efficiency jumps hundreds of times.”
“Yeah. So, let’s get on it—…Hm?”
Nodding slightly to Shirayuki’s blue-eyed gaze, I reached for my terminal—when it buzzed faintly. Tilting my head, I peeked at the screen: a single, simple message.
‘—To all Eimei students advancing to 《SFIA (Sufia)》 Third Stage.’
‘Tomorrow at 7:00 AM, before the 《Duel (Game)》 starts, gather at Eimei Academy’s main hall.’
‘Those who’ve read the rules likely get it—《Blank Code》 demands district-level cooperation. I’ve got a plan. If you have even a shred of trust in the student council president you chose, show up.’
‘I guarantee you won’t regret it.’
A summons from Eimei’s student council president, Shinji Enomoto, dubbed “Clairvoyant.”
Its pitch-perfect timing had me muttering “…Nice” despite myself.
♯
The next day, July 29th, Friday morning.
Just two hours before 《SFIA (Sufia)》’s Third Stage began, hundreds of players filled Eimei’s grand hall despite the early hour.
“…”
By the way, the stares hitting me as I leaned against the wall felt a bit different from usual. No doubt thanks to that accusation, but Shirayuki and I brushed them off with poker faces—dwelling on it’s pointless.
Our eyes were fixed ahead—on a boy in a crisp uniform surveying the hall from a high platform. Hand on the mic, he spoke in a steady tone.
‘First, thanks for your cooperation. I spent all night on this strategy, but it’s meaningless without enough participants. At this point, we’ve cleared the first hurdle.’
—Shinji Enomoto, Eimei Academy Class 3-A, 6-Star student council president.
He didn’t mention it—might not even realize—but gathering this many people overnight—97% of Eimei’s Third Stage qualifiers, per Shirayuki—shows he’s trusted. They believe riding his plan will work, leaving no reason to refuse.
“…Fwa…”
By the way, there’s also Nanase Asamiya, a blonde, short-haired, gyaru-ish beauty and fellow 6-Star, up there. She hasn’t said a word—just yawning sleepily, hand on hip. Even that looks good, ex-model vibes, but anyway.
‘I called you here about 《SFIA》 Third Stage—《Blank Code》. This 《Duel (Game)》 is brutal solo. You might need to chain through tons of players for one code. But with only 100 slots, we can’t dawdle… So, I built a system.’
Pausing, Enomoto grabbed a terminal by the mic. With deft moves, he projected a screen behind him.
‘“Eimei Network”—a system for Eimei students only, made with the 《Multi-Link Ex》 ability. It simply “manages all registered terminals’ code possession in real time.” Within Eimei, you can instantly search who has which code.’
“…Huh. So what’s the perk?”
‘Can’t figure that out, Nanase? Like I said, this 《Duel (Game)》 needs steady trading. With this, you can check if Eimei has a code a specific player wants—trade bait. The network auto-completes equal-value exchanges. It’s basically Eimei’s giant hand of cards. Get it?’
“I knew that… Ugh, why am I the question dummy…”
Nanase grumbled discontentedly, but Enomoto’s point clicked. A massive hand—“Eimei Network.” Yeah, with that much code freely usable, it slashes pointless detours big-time.
“Impressive. Other districts might try similar tricks, but few could build a system this flawless. Eimei’s student council president lives up to the name.”
“…Yeah.”
Shirayuki’s right. Cooking this up overnight? Shinji Enomoto’s unreal.
‘Oh—and one more thing.’
Then, Enomoto on the platform added curtly. He flicked his gaze at me briefly before facing the crowd again, deadpan.
‘That emergency broadcast the day before—《Hexagram》’s declaration. I bet a lot of you are hung up on it. Shinohara Hiroto’s cheating, it’ll come out in this 《Duel (Game)》—that whole deal.’
(!? W-What, what, what!? Don’t tell me Enomoto’s digging it up too!?)
My heart leapt at his sudden remark as the hall buzzed audibly. Seems some hesitated joining the network over it—sneaky glances flew at me from all sides. I couldn’t read Enomoto’s intent, swallowing hard with tension.
And—Enomoto continued quietly, his usual sour face intact.
‘Whether Shinohara’s cheating is legit, I honestly don’t know. Having fought 《Astral》 together, I’d say no—but maybe I’m just blind. That’s beside the point. The issue is Kaoru Saeki—District 2 Suisei’s ace—making that accusation mid-summer event. Shinohara’s obviously Eimei’s top player, and they hit him with the worst possible timing. If you don’t sense intent there, sorry, you’re on Nanase’s level.’
“Hey, what’s that mean!? I thought it was fishy too!”
‘Don’t be dumb, you were clearly shaken. …Anyway, Saeki Kaoru’s accusation is a shake-up. A psychological attack to crush Shinohara—and us Eimei. Letting petty tricks split us is unacceptable for Eimei Academy. I’ll say it now—《SFIA (Sufia)》 isn’t soft enough to win without Shinohara.’
Finishing fluently, Enomoto locked eyes with me. With a slight smirk, he added in a faintly teasing tone:
‘We’re in this together—better to trust than suspect, right?’
“—”
No need to say I regretted doubting him even for a second.
—In the end.
Whether Enomoto’s words swayed them to trust me, I’m not sure, but nearly every player there joined the Eimei Network. Makes sense—no downsides, and it massively boosts clear prospects. You’d need a wild reason to refuse.
Still, as Enomoto wrapped up, I caught the rear hall door slamming shut. Couldn’t see who, but some opted out, it seems.
Anyway, a bit later:
“—Sorry for dragging you out early, you two.”
Enomoto, stepping off the platform with Asamiya, called out to us as we watched Eimei students scatter from the hall’s edge. I—beyond grateful for his earlier words but hiding it—smirked slightly and replied:
“Yo, Enomoto, thanks back there. Never thought you’d cover for me.”
“If it’s thanks, at least use honorifics, Shinohara. Like I said, it wasn’t for you—it’s for Eimei’s win. This 《Duel (Game)》 needs district teamwork. I can’t ignore needless discord.”
“Huh? No way, Shinji—what’s that? Before this started, you were all cool-like, saying ‘We’re comrades-in-arms, after all…’ Too tsundere.”
“…Nanase, that’s over the line. There’s things you say and don’t.”
“H-Hey, wait, scary!? Stop it!”
Enomoto gripped Asamiya’s shoulder with a glare; she flushed red, shaking her golden hair as he loomed close.
After their usual banter, Enomoto turned back to me, grumpy.
“Hmph… Nanase’s nonsense aside, that’s my take. I’ve never liked 《Hexagram》 much anyway.”
“Got it. Well, I’d hate being chased by you, so it helps. What about Asamiya?”
“Me? Uh… Look, I’m not super smart, so I kinda bought what Shinji said earlier—like, ‘Shinohara wouldn’t do that,’ but I did think it for a bit. …But we fought 《Astral》 together, right? No way we’d have cleared without you. Doubting you now feels off, y’know?”
“…”
Embarrassed by her honesty, Asamiya fidgeted with her hair. Hearing it, my eyes warmed slightly; I muttered “…Gotcha” and looked away. …Suddenly, I felt bolstered. Bonds from that big game might mean more than I thought.
Anyway, seeing their reactions, Shirayuki beside me bowed coolly.
“Thank you both for trusting Master. I, of course, know he’s never cheated. I’d love to say all 《Astral》’s elite are allies now, but Akizuki-sama—”
“—Ehehe, you called?”
(!?)
A whispery breath and a sweet scent tickled my nose.
My thoughts froze as my left arm got yanked back. Turning, I saw a girl—blushing faintly, smiling happily—holding my hand shyly despite her bold move.
She—Noa Akizuki—is a third-year at Eimei like Enomoto and Asamiya. Chestnut, fluffy twin-tails, petite frame, a baby face too cute for a senior. Big chest clashing with all that, and she knows it’s her “weapon”—a sly, adorable little devil.
That little devil—Akizuki—upped her coy glance and went on:
“Morning, Hiroto-kun ♡ Been ages since summer break started—didn’t you miss me?”
“Hm… Not really—‘ages’ is just a few days, and you’ve been spamming chats anyway. No ‘long time’ vibe, so how’d I miss you?”
“Aww, I would~! I get lonely without daily Hiroto-kun chats ♪ If Shirayuki-chan wasn’t watching, I’d barge into your place, and we’d… ehehe ♡”
“…Sorry, Akizuki-sama. I’m irked for some reason—could you step away from Master? Right now, just two kilometers’d be fine.”
“Sure! Then, Hiroto-kun, let’s cuddle over there—”
“I didn’t say together.”
Shirayuki cut in, lips pursed slightly, against Akizuki’s relentless flirting. …It’s practically routine now. Akizuki let go reluctantly, then clasped her hands behind her with an “ehehe.”
“Still… rough spot, huh, Hiroto-kun? Weirdos picking on you?”
“Weirdos… Noa-chi, they’re kinda famous? 《Hexagram》—made waves last year too. Justice types punishing bad guys?”
“I know, but even justice heroes are my enemies if they’re against Hiroto-kun. They yap about cheating with zero proof—just jealousy. …Kinda reminds me of old me, which ticks me off ♡”
“Oh, gotcha…”
Her words clicked for me. …Right, she used to resent and try to crush me out of inferiority. Hard to imagine now, but it’s clear Enomoto, Asamiya, and Akizuki have no doubts about me, Shinohara Hiroto.
(Th-Thanks, Eimei…!)
After days of ego-searching mental damage, I was genuinely moved.
“Hm~…”
And Akizuki, pressing her index finger to her chin with a coy tone, continued.
“If anything, I’m more surprised that guy—Saeki-kun—is joining an event battle. I hear he’s super strong, but he only shows up at times like this to expose someone’s cheating… and even then, he’s a Double-Color holder, right?”
“Yeah. If memory serves, neither of his stars’ effects have been revealed yet… Anyway, with Saeki stepping up, no doubt Suisei’s serious.”
“Yup, yup. That emergency broadcast had two 《Hexagram》 execs in the background too. One’s Akutsu-chan from Suisei Academy… Definitely worth watching out for.”
“No question. And… you know this? District 14’s St. Rosalia—quiet for years with no standout wins, but since 《Astral》 ended, a player’s spiked in presence fast. A second-year named Minami Shizuku.”
(Oh, uh…)
Hearing that name, I kept cool on the surface but twitched inwardly, my cheek spasming.
Minami Shizuku—the blue-haired girl who faced us from Eimei Academy in May’s 《Astral》 exchange and later took on me and Saionji in 《Dear Script》’s 《Duel (Game)》. Always lazy and laid-back, her record and talent seemed average… until you realize she was an insane monster who went undefeated in a middle school with a 《Duel (Game)》 system like Academy Island’s, only hiding now because she hates attention.
Left alone, she might’ve coasted through a peaceful high school life, but losing to me and Saionji—or rather, getting egged on by a chaos-loving devil named Shinohara Yuzuha—seems to have flipped some weird switch.
Oblivious to that backstory, Enomoto continued with a stern look.
“She’d dropped to 3-Stars after losing 《Astral》, but by 《SFIA (Sufia)》’s start, her rank’s a shocking 5-Stars. Plus, she’s among the top qualifiers in both the First and Second Stages. Maybe not ‘watch out,’ but she’s definitely one to note.”
“…Huh? Shinji, you like that type? Total opposite of me.”
“I didn’t say a word about that.”
“Ehehe, no need to get jealous—Prez is all about someone ♡ Anyway, Noa’s got her eye on this one! District 17’s Amanezaka Academy, first-year, 4-Star Yumeno Misaki-chan… Her Second Stage win count is wild!”
“? Let’s see… Total wins… 187!? W-What, how!?”
“Freaky, right? No matter how you slice it. 《Rate Radar》 ends at 10 points, so win counts shouldn’t balloon like that… but Misaki-chan kept selling her points down to 1 just before clearing, buying new weapons with the cash, and kept dueling. She completed all twenty-four weapon types, apparently ♡”
“Whoa, nuts…”
Asamiya let out a blunt reaction to Akizuki’s rundown. Sure, it’s bonkers… but not surprising anymore. It’s not just Saeki or Yumeno—high-rankers from every district are still in. These early stages are still “win or bust” territory.
“Anyway—enough chit-chat. Let’s shift back to Third Stage strategy.”
Enomoto shook his head to refocus, muttering quietly.
“The ‘Eimei Network’ I announced earlier. It smooths in-district trades and preps code trade bait, but… rushed as it was, there’s a lag in reflecting trade status. I’ll hole up in the student council room for maintenance until it stabilizes. Of course, I’ll push the 《Duel (Game)》 too.”
“Hm… Got it. Need help? Even for a multitasker like you, clearing Third Stage while managing servers ain’t easy.”
“Use honorifics if you’re being considerate, Shinohara. …The offer’s appreciated, but…”
To my—well, really 《The Company》’s—cooperation pitch, Enomoto shook his head calmly. When I shot him a puzzled look, he lowered his voice and said:
“Right, I’ll clue you in, Shinohara. This 《Duel (Game)》—《Blank Code》—its nature means we’ll hit a point where we have to pick players.”
“…Pick?”
“Yeah. Third Stage caps at 100 qualifiers. A district might send a handful to the Semifinal at best. Naturally, you’d want the strongest players in those slots. With the Eimei Network, skewing codes to favor specific players isn’t hard.”
“Well… yeah, makes sense.”
“Right? I’m not pompous enough to call it ‘selection,’ but if it comes to that, I’m the only one—as Eimei’s student council president—who can take responsibility later. So, Shinohara, clear this 《Duel (Game)》 legit and head to the Semifinal—hm?”
Then… Enomoto, mid-noble spiel, paused as if distracted. I glanced over—Asamiya had grabbed his arm, yanking him to face her.
“…Shi.”
“Shi? What’s up, Nanase? Speak clearly if you’ve got something to say.”
“I said—quit posing!!”
With that shout—pointing right at Enomoto’s face—Asamiya let loose, her golden hair swaying as she vented. Tilting his head curiously, Enomoto took her rapid-fire jabs.
“Shinohara’s offering help, and you just shoot him down!? And ‘only I can take responsibility’—same vibe as your speech earlier! Shinji, you think you’re some protagonist or something!? That’s so lame!”
“It’s not lame or a delusion. All plain facts.”
“Oh, playing dumb? You’ve been working me like a dog…”
“? Of course. Our bond’s special—unlike anyone else’s.”
“Hwah!? S-Special? H-Hey, Shinji, special how—”
“Joint liability. …Oh, maybe too complex for Nanase.”
“Grrr! So mad! You spare Shinohara but casually make me an accomplice! Kinda happy—NOT! Ugh, Shinji, too many all-nighters frying your brain!?”
“Not at all, I’ve rested enough. You, Nanase, should nap. Third Stage starts in an hour.”
“Huh? Nah, I’m fine. Dozed off in your room earlier…”
“Oh… right, you leaned on me mid-work, sleeping soundly. Could’ve used the bed if you were tired.”
“N-No, it wasn’t comfy or anything! You should be thrilled I was that close!”
“A bit heavier than before?”
“I’M NOT!!!”
“…”
Watching their bickering—or flirting?—unfold, I wore a vague expression. Piecing it together, Asamiya crashed at Enomoto’s place… but best not to poke that bear.
Anyway—thanks to our ace student council prez, Eimei Academy’s got a system to tackle Third Stage 《Blank Code》. Once it starts, I just contact players with my codes and check the network for theirs. With some 《The Company》 support, I should progress decently.
(Still, it’s not exactly rock-solid…)
Hand to my mouth, I mulled it over. …Even with smoother trade ammo, deals aren’t guaranteed. Direct interference is possible too. With 《Hexagram》’s accusations fueling distrust, tons of players could hit me with 《Snatch》-type abilities. I’ll register 《Interference Null》, but a barrage could drain its uses fast.
That unease flickered through my mind—then:
“Suu—Good meowning, everyonyaaaaaan!!”
Suddenly, the hall’s back door flew open, and a girl burst in with a hype-filled greeting. Boyish beauty Suzuran Kazami, a chunky camera around her neck. She dashed over—tat-tat-tat—and thrust a mic at me.
“Pardon the intrusion, Eimei folks! And Shinohara-kun—straight up, what’s your take on this mess!? 《Hexagram》’s accusation’s split Academy Island in two. If you’re innocent, just say so, nyaa!”
“…Oh, got it.”
(H-H-Here it comes!? Well, with this uproar, of course _《Libra__》 would pounce!!_)
I replied coolly to Kazami while inwardly clutching my head. …Half-expected, but 《Libra》 hounding me isn’t fun. A misstep could tip public opinion further to 《Hexagram》—but:
(…Wait. Maybe I can flip this…)
That thought hit me. …Yeah, this isn’t bad. 《Libra》’s massive sway is a threat, but wielded right, it’s a killer weapon.
“Hah…”
So, with a slight smirk, I spun these words:
“I don’t care or give a damn how you take Saeki’s—《Hexagram》’s—accusations. But I’ll prophesy this: no matter the interference, I’ll never lose this 《Duel》. If they wanna waste time harassing me, fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it.”
“! S-So, that’s a defiance declaration against 《Hexagram》, right, nyaa!?”
“If you think so, sure. Personally, they’re not even on my radar.”
I taunted harder as Kazami’s voice pitched with excitement. …That’s enough seeds sown. If 《Libra》 broadcasts this island-wide, players will know I’m prepping interference countermeasures—like 《Interference Null》. That’ll deter a lot.
(Pieces are set—now it’s about speed.)
I nodded once, steeling myself.
♯
‘—Oh? This ID’s yours, 7-Star?’
《SFIA (Sufia)》 Third Stage—《Blank Code》.
Minutes after the 《Duel (Game)》 began, my first contact was none other than District 16 Tsuyuri Girls’ Academy’s “Oni Priestess,” Kururugi Senri—someone I’ve crossed paths with lately.
In this 《Duel (Game)》, players you need codes from show up as unique terminal IDs. Normally, you negotiate blind, but thanks to 《The Company》’s digging (hacking), I know exactly who each ID belongs to.
So, I started this talk knowing it’s that Kururugi Senri… and naturally, I’ve got a plan.
(On the battlefield, “run if you see her” is the motto, but she’s decent at heart.)
Right—her max-danger berserker rep is undeniable, but only when combat’s the sole option. In a negotiation-heavy 《Duel (Game)》 like this, her cool head (sans sweets) makes her ideal.
“Yo, been a while, Kururugi. Thanks for the help at 《Rainbow Pâtisserie》.”
‘That’s my line. That limited cheesecake was thanks to you… well, you. The taste, the aroma, the texture—thinking about it makes me smile.’
“Glad to hear it. Anyway, about 《Blank Code》—let’s negotiate. You’ve got my code, right? I want it for one of yours.”
‘…Oh? You’ve already got trade bait? What trick’s that?’
“Trade secret, obviously.”
I grinned, keeping Enomoto’s work under wraps.
Honestly, this shouldn’t be a bad deal for Kururugi either. Mutual code swaps are 《Blank Code》’s ideal trade, and since it’s early, there’s no risk of “already-known digit” flops.
If she’d refuse, it’d be over doubting me—but:
‘Fine, sweets boy. I fully accept your offer.’
“…Huh? That nickname aside, instant yes?”
‘Yeah. No reason to say no. I know about 《Hexagram》’s accusations, sure… but honestly, ridiculous. Sweets lovers can’t be evil, right?’
Half-joking, Kururugi approved the trade fast. Checking it, I got my 3rd-digit code—number “3.” The network’s working fine too, so time to push this 《Duel (Game)》.
And so—
‘…You called?’
My next contact was St. Rosalia’s hotshot 5-Star, Minami Shizuku—the ex-champ with lazy eyes. No way she’d be as smooth as Kururugi, but familiarity makes her negotiable-ish.
Hearing her usual flat opener, I played dumb about her identity.
“Hello, Shinohara Hiroto from Eimei Academy. You?”
‘Me? I’m the rumored Minami-chan… super strong, cute enough to wreck, insanely popular. What’s a bad guy like you want with me?’
Her smooth jab made me (Ugh…) clam up. She couldn’t see my reaction, but Minami pressed on, faintly smug.
‘See? You’re a bad guy… my eyes don’t lie. Globally acclaimed.’
“…You buy 《Hexagram》’s crap?”
‘? Nah, doesn’t matter… cheating or not, I don’t care. Just, you struggling makes me feel good. That’s it.’
“That just makes you a jerk.”
‘Mph. Calling me a jerk? Cheeky… annoying. …But I kinda owe you.’
“Owe me?”
Parroting her, my question got a short ‘Yeah’ from Minami. Then, over the terminal, she tossed this:
‘You reminded me… it’s been a while since I felt this. Dueling you and 《Empress》—it’s really fun.’
“…Got it.”
‘Yep. So, I’ll tell you free—no trade. I’ve got your 1st-digit code, number “5.” No payment needed… do what you want.’
Flat-toned as ever but shockingly straight, Minami handed over my code. I’d prepped her code as trade bait like with Kururugi, but saving it might be better. I wavered—
“Master… no. We should play it safe.”
Right then, Shirayuki leaned in, shaking her head. Snapped back by her blue stare, I resumed with Minami.
“Hey, Minami. Hate to waste your freebie, but I wanna confirm with a code trade anyway. I’ve got yours ready.”
‘Eh… why? I told you. Ruins my thanks—’
“Just do it.”
‘…Tch.’
Grumbling faintly, Minami agreed reluctantly. Something felt off, so I checked the code post-trade. My 1st-digit code wasn’t “5”—it’s “8.”
“…Oi. Why’d you casually try to scam me, Minami?”
‘Huh? I dunno… maybe you misread. Pwee-hyuru-hyuru-hyuu’
“That cover-up’s too forced… geez.”
Sighing, I shook my head.
Minami, meanwhile, whistled badly (impression-wise) for a bit, then left with, ‘See ya in the Semifinal.’ Her flat voice carried clear fighting spirit.
“Phew…”
Anyway, I’d been gathering codes smoothly, but easy trades stopped at Kururugi and Minami. There’s one more acquaintance on the list, but I’d rather avoid them.
So, after Minami, I tried a few strangers—three straight rejections. All with, “Who knows what cheating you’ll pull.” Even high-rankers can’t fully ignore 《Hexagram》’s accusations, it seems.
As I stalled, the 《Duel (Game)》 marched on mercilessly—
‘—Hmm? So that’s why you’re sulking.’
Hours later, near day one’s end of 《Blank Code》, I was back in my room, sighing “Haa…” on a video call with a girl who’d contacted me.
My “negotiation partner” across the screen—red-haired fake heiress Saionji Sarasa. Probably alone at home, she’d ditched her 《Empress》 act, propping her cheek with a casual look. I’m in 《The Company》’s fortified mansion; her place has top-tier security too. Eavesdropping’s not a worry.
Anyway, Saionji aimed her ruby eyes at me through the screen, continuing lazily.
‘Seems like quite a mess, Shinohara. Where’d you catch 《Hexagram》’s eye?’
“No clue… or maybe nowhere? They’ve suspected me from the start, haven’t they? They’re ‘heroes of justice,’ after all.”
‘Hehe, true. Fitting group to take down a liar like you.’
“Don’t wanna hear that from you…”
I shook my head at her teasing jab. …It’s the opposite of 《Astral》. Back then, a “real Saionji Sarasa” 《Doppelgänger》 accused her of being fake; now I’m the target. Still, as fellow lying accomplices, if my lies unravel, she’d crash too.
“Hm… by the way, 《Hexagram》 hasn’t touched you?”
‘What, worried? I’m fine. Every district’s probably doing it, but Ouka’s got an “exchange assist” system—I’ve nailed three digits already. Trade with you, and Third Stage is done.’
“…Gotcha.”
I shrugged, barely fazed.
As mentioned, Saionji initiated this. More precisely, seeking her “last digit,” she hit me by chance. She didn’t have a trade-worthy code (Ouka’s system prepped one, but it overlapped Minami’s), so she offered, ‘I’ll give you all 7 of my pt for your code.’ I know trading lets her clear first, but she’d win anyway. Better to cash in pt instead.
Sure, I wanted to share 《Hexagram》 intel directly, but strategy-wise, that’s why I agreed.
Saionji, elbow on table, let out a glum breath.
‘Still, what a pain… 《Hexagram》. Leader Saeki Kaoru’s one thing, but those two execs behind him? Tough. District 10 Oumi’s 5-Star Tsuzuki Koto and District 2 Suisei’s 6-Star Akutsu Miyabi. This might be dicier than 《Astral》.’
“Yeah… I think I can handle 《Blank Code》, but the next stage is trouble. Semifinal—everyone’s betting stars, and it’s all heavy hitters. If 《The Company》 gets restricted, it’s a real hassle.”
‘Right… Hey, Shinohara. If it gets truly dire, rely on me, okay? You know I’m your accomplice. “Checkmate without me noticing” isn’t how I wanna end.’
“…Yeah, I know.”
Nodding slightly at her clumsy kindness, I felt a tickle. …Still, that’s a last resort. If our partnership leaked while I’m under suspicion, it’d be game over.
“Anyway, 《Hexagram》’s accusations haven’t dealt a fatal blow yet. If you snag any info, let me know.”
‘Got it. Hehe… hunted by a justice squad—feels like a movie, huh?’
“A suspense flick from the crook’s view, maybe. We are doing bad stuff.”
‘True enough… But, Shinohara, here’s one nice tidbit.’
Pausing, Saionji softened her ruby gaze with a faint smile. Lowering her voice, she leaned in like sharing a prized secret.
‘You know I’ve been faking “Saionji Sarasa” since joining Ouka. Constant lies. Just a slightly smart plain girl pretending to be the Saionji family heiress.’
“Felt some humblebragging there… So what?”
‘So what? Isn’t that “bad”? The founder’s lineage and current chair’s daughter being fake—it’s as big a “sin” as your cheating, right? Yet 《Hexagram》’s never chased me. No interference.’
“…”
‘Dunno if it’s an oversight or intentional… Either way, it means 《Hexagram》’s justice isn’t flawless.’
Saionji smirked, peering straight into my eyes.
No clear path yet—but somehow, I felt cheered up.

Trading with me for her final code, Saionji cleared 《SFIA (Sufia)》 Third Stage.
Per the official announcement, she’s the second qualifier island-wide. Beating her to first was Amanezaka Academy’s first-year Yumeno Misaki. After her Second Stage rampage, she’s already this year’s dark horse star.
Still… only two Semifinal advantage slots remain. Day two of 《Blank Code》 dawned, and I was contacting a player for my third code.
ID: 07-499. District 7 Shinra High’s “Absolute Monarch,” Kirigaya Toya.
“Of all people, him…”
Shirayuki set a teacup before me with a quiet murmur. …I get it. Kirigaya’s the most belligerent battle nut I know. Upgraded to Double-Color post-《Astral》 rewards, his threat level’s soared.
“But he’s the only familiar face left besides Kururugi and Minami, and with slots dwindling, I can’t be picky. Plus, I just secured negotiation pt.”
“True… Understood. I’ll watch from here.”
Shirayuki nodded faintly, her clear blue eyes tinged with worry.
To ease her, I replied “Yeah” shortly, reaching for my terminal again. Steadying my breath, I typed Kirigaya’s ID and called.
After a few rings, he picked up in his usual tone.
‘Oi, what’s this outta nowhere? Who the hell are ya? Wanna negotiate with me, state your name and school first.’
“Shinohara Hiroto, Eimei. How you holding up, Kirigaya?”
‘Huh? Hyaha… What’s this, it’s you!? Man, I’m damn lucky as always!’
“…? Lucky how? Who I am shouldn’t matter to you.”
‘Nah, it does. Who I shove aside to climb matters big-time for my drive. Been crushing nobodies I don’t even know—lame. The finish needs a big shot to be worth it.’
Kirigaya grinned gleefully. Something in that piqued me, and I raised a brow.
“Finish… So you’re at least open to trading with me. Figured you’d slam the door just ’cause it’s me.”
‘Dumbass, why’d I waste a chance like that? We’ve got this flashy stage set up! You’re obligated to entertain me full-on. And if we’re fighting, this indirect 《Duel (Game)》 ain’t it. Semifinal’s where 《SFIA》 gets real.’
“…”
‘So I won’t pull some petty trap on a whim. …But you’ll pay a proper price—enough to make me feel I’ve crushed you.’
I couldn’t see Kirigaya’s face over the call, but his voice screamed smug grin as he laid out his demand.
‘The once-per-game “info reveal”… Cough up the full 10 pt for it. Then I’ll hand over your 2nd-digit code.’
“…What’s that? Normal trade not good enough?”
‘Idiot, what if you’ve rigged some 《Display Bug》 or crap? You’d love to knock me out here—motive’s clear. So it’s pt—safe win, low risk—or nothing.’
“Even then, that’s greedy. Knowing you, you nabbed Second Stage advantages, right? 3 pt would do it.”
‘Nope, no dice. Bet you planned to reveal your last digit with leftover pt after me, but that doesn’t count as crushing you.’
I shrugged silently, inwardly tsking at his sharp callout. …Spot on. I started 《Blank Code》 with 7 pt, got 7 more from Saionji—14 total. If Kirigaya’s at 7, 3 more hits 10 for reveal. A no-loss trade… but a tie doesn’t cut it for him.
(Eimei might have someone to trade pt for codes, but the network’s “equal code swaps” rule means pt deals need one-on-one talks. …Can I make it?)
Gripping the terminal, I weighed it anxiously. Two advantage slots left—or one, if Kirigaya beats me. With the two-trades-per-hour limit, I’d need 6+ pt in one go to trade with him fast, but…
‘Hyaha… Do it, Shinohara! Looks like some shady punks are after ya, but if you’re a toy that breaks that easy, you ain’t worth my time!’
Cackling like it’s a blast, Kirigaya hung up without hesitation. Shirayuki broke the silence, silver hair swaying.
“Good work, Master. I’ll prep more tea… Still, lucky break. I was secretly plotting cheats if he demanded the impossible, but—thankfully—no need.”
“Huh, really? It’s not that tough, but snagging an advantage feels hopeless now… unless I borrow 《The Company》.”
“True. In a way, it’ll involve 《The Company》’s help. But no cheating required.”
Puzzled by her odd phrasing, I tilted my head “?” She met my gaze with blue eyes, hand to chest, and smiled faintly.
“I’ll use my pt—I cleared Second Stage top-tier, so I’ve got 7, like Rina. Handing it to you meets the terms easily.”
“…What? No, wait—what? That’d tank your Semifinal shot—”
“I don’t need to advance… Listen, Master. As Kirigaya-sama said, 《SFIA》’s real fight starts at the Semifinal. It’ll be brutal beyond compare. I’m clearly outmatched. So, as a supporter—not a player—your closest aide, your skilled maid, I want to keep helping you.”
“…”
“Thus, I’ll drop out of 《SFIA》 here. If it’s not a bother, use my pt.”
No lies, no exaggeration—just pure, heartfelt words from Shirayuki. Her unwavering devotion shook me; I barely managed an “Yeah” nod. …She probably planned to bow out at Third Stage from the start. No trades on day two, hoarding pt—all for me.
(If I can’t win with this, it’s a lie…!)
Covering my face to hide my expression, I steeled myself anew.
Anyway, trading with Shirayuki bumped my pt to 21—enough to spare for Kirigaya and reveal my last digit. I called him back, got a cackling welcome, and finished the trade. His 2nd-digit code was “1.” Without pause, I spent 10 pt to unlock my 4th-digit code, unveiling the full pass.
“Pass input ‘8136’… Confirm.”
Right after, a beep like a lock clicking signaled “Third Stage Cleared” on my terminal. …《Duel (Game)》 done. 《Hexagram》 curbed my cheating, but I managed.
Now, if I nabbed a Semifinal advantage, I’d have zero complaints—
“One moment, Master. I’ll check the clear rankings, just in case.”
Shirayuki murmured, tapping the terminal. 《Libra》 always broadcasts who clears, so it’s legit to look up.
“I’ll read from the top. First, topping the list is Amanezaka Academy’s first-year, Yumeno Misaki-sama. Second, narrowly, is Ouka Academy’s 《Empress》 Saionji Sarasa-sama. Next, Shinra’s ‘Absolute Monarch’ Kirigaya Toya-sama… and… huh?”
“…? What’s up, Shirayuki?”
“No… it’s just… The last advantage slot, fourth overall, is Suisei Academy’s Saeki Kaoru-sama. You’re fifth, Master… by a hair.”
“Wha…!”
Hearing Shirayuki’s faintly shaken report, my eyes widened.
Done—outplayed. He likely used an ability to track my progress. Could be coincidence, but the gap between Kirigaya’s clear and mine was minutes. Logically, an intentional “last-second slide” is way likelier. District 2 Suisei’s ace and 《Hexagram》’s leader, Saeki Kaoru—he’d solved his pass ages ago, waiting for me to finish. Manipulating the ranks, he stamped a clear “hierarchy” for all to see.
(He’s that dead-set on crushing me…!)
Tsking at falling into his trap, I clenched my fist.
But the result’s set. For the first time, I missed an advantage—then, my pocketed terminal buzzed briefly. Caller: “Enomoto Shinji.”
‘Hello, it’s me, Enomoto. Just confirmed your Third Stage clear. Wanted to call sooner, but I didn’t wanna disrupt your run. …Got a sec?’
“? Yeah, fine… Something up?”
‘Yeah. Bad news. Bottom line—I’m not advancing to the Semifinal.’
(—Huh?)
Enomoto’s bombshell froze my thoughts. Taking twice as long to process, I finally mustered a question.
“What’s that mean…? You dropping out is huge.”
‘Hm. Since yesterday evening, some unknown group’s been hacking the Eimei Network. Left alone, it could get hijacked, so I can’t step away.’
“!? That’s it…? Then ditch it—hasn’t it done enough? High-rankers could manage without—”
‘No, won’t work. Nanase and Akizuki built strategies assuming the network’s up. Ditching them—no, all Eimei’s prospects—for me to hit the Semifinal alone? Can’t do it, emotionally or tactically.’
“Maybe, but…”
‘Right? …It’s just shifting to off-board tactics a bit earlier than 《Astral》. I’m better at support anyway. I can fight plenty without the spotlight.’
(W-Wait… Serious? Enomoto out…?)
Stunned by the curveball, I went speechless. After Shirayuki, another 《Astral》 ally—Enomoto—chose to drop. Both reasons check out, but it’s a wild sign of 《SFIA (Sufia)》’s brutality.
‘—Oh, and Shinohara.’
Then, Enomoto’s voice dipped lower over the terminal.
‘I said “unknown group,” but… I’ve got a hunch. It’s likely 《Hexagram》 messing with the Eimei Network.’
“!? …You sure?”
‘No, zero proof. If it’s really 《Hexagram》, no digging will pin them as guilty. But… last year’s 《Duel (Game)》, their unfair “justice” stripped Eimei’s win. Our ace lost all cred, never recovered. That’s when I knew—it’s not justice.’
“…”
‘Exactly… Mere outlaws I’d ignore, but 《Hexagram》? I’ve gotta dig in. Not just short-term clears—max efficiency to the finals. Couldn’t last year… but this time, I’ve got a 《Duel》-worthy player to trust.’
I fell silent at Enomoto’s words. …In short, Saionji’s fears just surfaced. 《Hexagram》, justice rejecting evil—not so pure. What they’re hiding, who knows.
So, I—
“Got it… Leave the 《Duel (Game)》 to me, Enomoto. Eimei’s taking 《SFIA》’s top spot.”
Grinning, I tossed out those words.
