Chapter 1: Tennouji Mirei’s Proposal
“Well then, I’m off.”
Stepping out of the car, I bowed to Shizune-san and the driver.
Hinako was walking about ten meters ahead. Keeping that distance, I headed toward the Academy.
“Konohana-san, good morning.”
“Oh, Tomonari-san. Good morning.”
At the shoe lockers, I caught up with Hinako, and we exchanged greetings.
Truth be told, we’d already greeted each other this morning in Hinako’s room… but publicly, this was our first greeting of the day.
Playing the part of the perfect Ojou-sama, Hinako was charming and approachable, yet she exuded an air of untouchable elegance, radiating a charisma that could fluster anyone, regardless of gender.
But knowing it wasn’t her true self, I found myself preferring the real Hinako—the one I knew behind the mask.
“…This is such a hassle every time.”
“…What is?”
Hinako muttered her true feelings under her breath, so I glanced around to make sure no one was listening before whispering back.
“We come to school together in the morning… but we have to split up and regroup later like this.”
“…Can’t be helped. If anyone found out we’re living together, it’d be bad news.”
It’s restrictive, sure, but things have improved.
Thanks to tea parties and study sessions, it’s become common knowledge at the Academy that Hinako and I are friends. Compared to the early days, I don’t have to keep as much distance from her anymore. We can talk normally in class, and if someone spots us hanging out after school, we can usually brush it off.
“Still… I’d like to walk to school together sometimes.”
“We ride in the same car partway, don’t we? It’s just the last bit where we split up.”
“That’s not what I mean…”
Hinako lowered her gaze as she spoke.
“I want to… walk outside together, just the two of us.”
Oh, that’s what she meant.
I could see her point, but sadly, it wasn’t something we could easily pull off. Maybe I’d ask Shizune-san about it later.
“Ah! You two!”
As we changed shoes at the lockers and headed to class, we ran into our classmate, Asahi-san, along the way.
“Good morning.”
“Morning! Hey, I heard they just posted the midterm results in front of the staff room. Wanna go check them out together?”
Asahi-san looked between me and Hinako as she spoke.
At Kiou Academy, exam rankings are posted publicly after every test, but only the top fifty names are listed. I was pretty sure my name wouldn’t be there.
Hinako and I exchanged a glance and nodded almost simultaneously.
“Sure, sounds good.”
“I’ll join you as well.”
There was still some time before classes started.
We’d just be killing time in the classroom anyway, and honestly, I was curious about the rankings. My old high school never did anything like this…
The three of us headed toward the staff room.
On the way, I spotted a familiar male student.
“Oh, Taishou-kun.”
“Yo, you guys came too, huh?”
Taishou noticed us and flashed a casual grin.
“You’re probably not on the list anyway, Taishou-kun.”
“Shut up. Even if I’m not, I still wanna see it.”
With that, Taishou turned to look at the rankings posted on the bulletin board.
We followed his gaze to the board.
At the very top, in first place, was a name we all knew well.
“Konohana-san’s number one again, huh? That’s impressive!”
“Hehe, thank you.”
Hinako gave an elegant, Ojou-sama smile, her beauty drawing the eyes of every student around her.
Knowing her real personality, I sometimes forgot, but Hinako was a true prodigy, excelling in both academics and athletics.
She really was… exceptional in ability, at least.
Ability, that is.
“Ow!”
Out of nowhere, Hinako stepped on my foot.
“…You’re thinking something rude, aren’t you?”
How did she know?
I averted my eyes from Hinako, who was puffing out her cheeks.
Lately, it felt like Hinako had become more expressive.
Not in her acting, but in her true self. That seemed like a good sign. I wasn’t sure what triggered the change, though.
Maybe not all of Hinako’s changes were bad.
As I mulled that over, my gaze drifted sideways, landing on a girl with striking blonde vertical curls who stood out even in the crowd.
She had a finger to her chin, her expression serious.
Curious, I called out to her.
“Tennouji-san?”
“Oh, Tomonari-san, you’re here too?”
Tennouji Mirei.
The refined daughter of the Tennouji Group, a conglomerate rivaling the Konohana Group in influence.
I glanced at the bulletin board she’d been staring at and spoke up.
“Second place, congratulations.”
“…As long as that infuriating name sits in first, I can’t celebrate.”
I’d meant it as genuine praise, but Tennouji-san’s face twisted with frustration.
Come to think of it, she’d been fiercely competitive with Hinako since we first met. Seeing Hinako’s name above hers must’ve stung.
“That said, this time’s results were meaningful.”
Meaningful?
I tilted my head, and Tennouji-san explained.
“The gap between me and Konohana-san has narrowed since last time. It’s not because her scores dropped, either. This is, without a doubt, proof of my own growth…! Heh, I can finally see a path to victory…!”
Tennouji-san muttered, a fire blazing in her eyes.
“By the way, what rank were you?”
She asked so casually that it took me a second to respond.
“I didn’t make the list. Probably around average, maybe a bit below.”
“Pardon?”
Tennouji-san’s tone carried a faint edge of irritation as she pressed.
“What did you just say?”
“Uh, I mean, around average, or maybe a little below…”
“Even after receiving personal instruction from me… you’re below average?”
A vein pulsed on Tennouji-san’s forehead.
“W-Well, the subjects you helped me with felt like they went pretty well, but…”
“Silence!”
She cut me off sharply.
“As always, your mindset is utterly lacking! No matter how diligent you are, you’ll never grow if your goals are so low!”
“Ugh.”
Her words hit me like a dagger to the chest.
I’d thought I was being realistic, aiming for steady progress within my limits, but maybe that was just a cowardly mindset.
“Slouching.”
“Y-Yes!”
Her sharp comment made me straighten my posture, which had unconsciously slumped.
“Honestly… As I’ve thought before, you’re the type whose emotions show clearly in your demeanor.”
“I-Is that so…?”
I had no idea.
“But on the flip side, if you could build unshakable confidence, you’d carry yourself with far more poise.”
Tennouji-san paused, as if considering something.
I braced myself for whatever she’d say next…
“I have a proposal. How about spending your after-school hours with me for a while?”
Her words caught me completely off guard.
During the break after first period.
I sat down with Tennouji-san to talk things over.
“Spending after-school hours together—what exactly do you mean?”
“I’ll tutor you.”
Tennouji-san went on to explain her intentions.
“I joined the study group you organized before, but… to be honest, that was my first time teaching anyone.”
“Really?”
“Yes. And through that, I realized something: teaching others seems to benefit me as well.”
What did she mean by that?
Seeing my confusion, Tennouji-san clarified.
“In short, by teaching you, my own academic performance improved. That’s what led to my results in this exam. I managed to close the gap with Konohana-san.”
I see.
Now it was starting to make sense.
“So, you want to keep doing study sessions like that going forward?”
“Precisely.”
I nodded, understanding her point.
“But why choose me as your partner?”
“Because, among the people close to me, your grades are the lowest.”
“Guh…!”
It stung, but I had no comeback.
“That said, it wouldn’t be fair to burden you without offering something in return. If there’s anything I can help with…”
“…Just having you tutor me would already be a huge help.”
“No. Teaching you benefits me, so it’s only right that I offer something in exchange to keep things fair.”
She’s so principled.
It wasn’t just about my feelings—she wouldn’t be satisfied unless the deal felt equitable to her.
“Is there anything besides studying that you struggle with?”
“Something I’m bad at, huh…”
I thought back to the countless mistakes I’d made since becoming Hinako’s caretaker.
Studying, sports, chores at the mansion, self-defense—I was far from perfect at any of them, but the thing I was worst at was…
“…Manners, probably.”
Tennouji-san’s face lit up with a satisfied smile.
“Then I’ll personally teach you manners! The Tennouji family places great importance on etiquette. It’s my specialty!”
She placed a hand on her chest, practically radiating “Leave it to me!” energy.
Honestly, that would be a lifesaver. A huge lifesaver. But spending after-school hours on this wasn’t something I could decide on my own.
“It’s a generous offer, but… can I think it over?”
Tennouji-san looked puzzled.
“Why? You seemed enthusiastic about it.”
“Well, because of my household situation, I’m not allowed to make my own schedule.”
“I see. Sounds like a complicated household.”
Complicated might be an understatement. It was the Konohana Group, after all.
Even though I’d gotten used to it lately, I still felt out of place at times.
I let out a small sigh, thinking about my daily struggles, when I noticed Tennouji-san staring at me silently.
“Tomonari-san, do you act the same way at home as you do here?”
“The same way… how do you mean?”
“I mean this timid, almost spineless attitude, as if you’re lacking any shred of confidence.”
Her critique was as brutal as ever.
But if I seemed timid here, then yeah, I was probably the same at the mansion.
“Probably… I’m like this at home too.”
Tennouji-san let out a heavy sigh.
“There’s another reason I invited you, beyond your grades. It’s about how you carry yourself at the Academy.”
She looked me straight in the eyes and continued.
“I’ll be blunt. You feel inferior to the people around you, don’t you?”
For a moment, it felt like my heart had been seized.
It wasn’t the shock of a hidden truth being exposed—it was the realization that she’d seen through a part of myself I hadn’t even acknowledged.
I’m the only commoner at Kiou Academy. Compared to the other students, I’m inferior in intellect, background, everything.
I don’t dwell on it constantly, but every now and then, the thought crosses my mind. I’m only here because of the Konohana family’s influence; I don’t belong at this school by my own merit. It’s hard not to feel inferior.
Maybe… I’ve been carrying a complex about this.
It hit me, belatedly, as I stood there in silence.
As if reading my thoughts, Tennouji-san pressed on.
“It’s not uncommon for students at Kiou Academy to develop complexes like that. But fortunately, you have ambition. I promise you, with my guidance, you can overcome that inferiority complex.”
I was touched.
Her offer was so generous that I nearly agreed on the spot.
The more I wanted to support Hinako as her caretaker, the more challenges I faced. It might be naive, but I had a gut feeling that learning from Tennouji-san—both academics and manners—could solve a lot of those problems at once.
“We should head back to class soon. I’d appreciate your answer as soon as possible.”
“…Got it. I’ll let you know tomorrow.”
After school, I’d talk to Shizune-san right away.
“Thank you for reaching out. Honestly, Tennouji-san, you have an incredible eye for people. I didn’t expect to be seen through like this.”
“Flattery isn’t necessary. It’s no big deal.”
“No, really, I think it’s amazing.”
When I said that with genuine admiration, Tennouji-san looked away.
“It’s really not a big deal… I just speak from experience, that’s all.”
Her last words were so quiet, almost a mumble, that I barely caught them.
But what stuck with me was the rare, fleeting glimpse of a darker expression on Tennouji-san’s usually confident face.
After school.
Back at the Konohana mansion, I was receiving my usual lessons from Shizune-san.
“That concludes today’s lessons. Good work.”
“Thank you.”
Prep, review, etiquette training, and self-defense.
With all the lessons done, I finally felt the day winding down.
Back when I started, I’d be so exhausted by this point that I could barely speak, but now I had a bit of energy left. Maybe I was growing, both physically and mentally.
Next, I’d head to Hinako’s room and get ready for a bath.
As I wiped off some sweat and glanced at Shizune-san, I noticed her reviewing some documents with a serious expression.
“What are those papers?”
“A schedule for your training, Izuki-san. Your progress is faster than expected, so I’m considering some adjustments.”
Shizune-san scanned the documents with focus.
This might be the perfect chance.
“Shizune-san, there’s something I’d like to discuss…”
I explained what Tennouji-san and I had talked about earlier.
The proposal for her to tutor me in academics and manners after school.
“…I see. So you had that conversation with Tennouji-sama.”
Shizune-san set the papers down and thought it over carefully.
“What do you want to do, Izuki-san?”
“Personally, I’d like to accept. Tennouji-san’s a great teacher, and… I think I could rely on her for a lot.”
Shizune-san’s teaching was excellent too, but Tennouji-san, being a peer, could offer advice from a similar perspective.
And—there was what Tennouji-san had said.
“You feel inferior to the people around you, don’t you?”
“With my guidance, I promise you can overcome that inferiority complex.”
Those words struck a deep chord in my heart.
Tennouji-san always carries herself with such confidence, truly a student worthy of Kiou Academy. I hadn’t fully realized it before, but I think I’ve come to admire her.
“If I can learn from Tennouji-san… I feel like I could become someone more worthy of standing by Hinako’s side.”
Someone who can keep up with Hinako’s moments of relaxation and support her perfectly when it matters most. To be that kind of caretaker, I still have too many shortcomings. If I can absorb even a fraction of Tennouji-san’s strengths, I might just get there.
“I see no issue with it,” Shizune-san said.
She continued.
“Tennouji-sama will likely teach you manners even more effectively than I could. And… I have a message from Kagen-sama. He wishes for you to actively build connections for the Konohana family in Hinako-sama’s stead.”
“…From Kagen-san?”
“Yes. Much like when you invited Miyakojima-sama and Tennouji-sama to the social gathering, he hopes you’ll subtly keep Hinako-sama’s reputation in mind.”
Honestly, it caught me off guard.
I’d always gotten the sense that Kagen-san didn’t fully trust me.
If his view of me has shifted, it’s probably because of that night at the social gathering. That was the first time I felt like I glimpsed Kagen-san’s true thoughts.
“Understood. If that’s the case, I’ll do my best to make it work.”
“Thank you. But please, keep it natural… within the bounds of what’s appropriate for students.”
As fellow students. As friends.
Within that scope, I’m free to build connections. Ultimately, I just need to tie those relationships back to Hinako.
“…Izuki?”
At that moment, the dojo door opened, and Hinako’s voice rang out.
“The bath… you’re not ready yet?”
“Sorry, I was just talking with Shizune-san.”
“…Talking?”
Hinako tilted her head, and I explained.
“I was planning to ask you too, but is it okay if we don’t head home together after school for a while?”
“…Huh?”
Hinako’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Kagen-san’s officially hired me again, so I want to buckle down and study a bunch of things. I need to improve my grades at the Academy and learn proper manners so I don’t embarrass myself at social events. I’d like to use my after-school time for that.”
“You’re getting taught by someone outside? …Why not Shizune?”
Shizune-san answered her question.
“I have other duties that sometimes prevent me from focusing solely on Izuki-san’s lessons. Especially lately, with the aftermath of the recent social gathering, my workload has increased, so I may not be able to dedicate as much time to his training for a while.”
“…Hmph. Then what if I teach him…?”
“Hinako-sama, you have your own responsibilities to attend to, and your schedule is quite tight. Besides, learning from a variety of people in a new environment will benefit Izuki-san as well.”
“Mmph, hmph…”
Hinako was definitely looking dissatisfied.
After thinking it over for about thirty seconds, she slowly parted her small lips.
“Izuki… is this for my sake?”
“It’s not exactly for you, but… it’s so I can properly fulfill my role as your caretaker.”
I don’t mean to make it sound like a favor, but I’m taking this on because I want to be even more useful to Hinako than I am now.
Hinako let out a troubled “Nnn” sound before sighing.
“Fine, then. …I’ll allow it.”
“Thanks.”
With Hinako’s permission secured, I decided to tell Tennouji-san tomorrow that I’d accept her offer.
“But… who’s going to teach you studying and manners?”
I answered her question.
“Tennouji-san.”
I thought I saw Hinako’s eyes widen slightly, so I clarified.
“For a while, I’ll be spending my after-school time with Tennouji-san.”
“…………………………”
At the bathroom in Hinako’s room.
I stood watch as Hinako soaked in the tub, munching on a popsicle.
“Mmm, yummy…”
Seeing Hinako so utterly relaxed, unlike her poised Academy self, I gave a wry smile.
“Does this make up for it?”
“…Still feels a little lacking.”
“Cut me some slack. Sneaking popsicles past Shizune-san is no easy feat, you know.”
I sighed, and Hinako lowered her gaze before speaking.
“I still don’t really like it… but if it’s for my sake, I’ll let it slide.”
Once again, she gave her approval for me to spend time with Tennouji-san.
From the dojo conversation until now, Hinako had been against the idea, but the popsicle bribe sealed the deal. With all the chaos lately—my near-dismissal as her caretaker and the social gathering—she might be happy to finally have a moment to unwind.
Still, Hinako seemed a bit dissatisfied.
I called out to her as she sulked, staring at the water’s surface.
“If you really don’t want me to, I can turn down the offer, you know…”
“…I don’t want to get in your way, Izuki.”

“…I see.”
Is she being considerate of me?
That’s supposed to be my job as her caretaker… but it makes me a little happy.
“Honestly, I’m kind of relieved.”
“Relieved…?”
“I thought you’d been avoiding me lately.”
“…Why would you think that?”
“Well, you didn’t want me to wake you up in the mornings anymore, and sometimes it feels like you’re keeping your distance from me.”
At that, Hinako puffed out her cheeks.
“It’s not like I want to keep my distance.”
“Then is there a reason for it?”
“…Mmph.”
With a complicated expression, Hinako muttered softly.
“…I don’t want to say.”
It piqued my curiosity, but if she wasn’t ready to share, I wouldn’t pry.
“By the way, Hinako.”
“…What?”
“Isn’t that outfit kind of hot?”
Hinako was wearing the school’s designated swimsuit.
It was an elegant design, fitting for Kiou Academy, but it looked a bit stifling in the bathroom.
“…Not really.”
“You used to wear bikini-style swimsuits, didn’t you? Why switch to a school swimsuit all of a sudden?”
“…Just felt like it.”
Hinako answered hesitantly, turning her back to me.
Inwardly, I wondered—Is she avoiding me after all?
But then, she’s fine bathing together like this and even said she wants to spend after-school time together… I couldn’t figure out what Hinako was thinking.
I’ve been her caretaker for over a month now. I thought I was starting to understand her, but lately, her thoughts have become a mystery again. What’s going on?
“Hurry up and wash my hair.”
“…Right.”
I’d save the moping for later. I reached out to wash Hinako’s hair.
Maybe from the heat, her ears were tinged red.
“Nfu…”
Hinako let out a satisfied hum.
Well, she wouldn’t let someone she disliked touch her hair, at least.
“…Izuki.”
“Hm?”
As I shampooed her hair, Hinako spoke in a small voice.
“Don’t do… this kind of thing with Tennouji-san.”
What a thing to say.
I couldn’t help but chuckle, feeling a bit relieved as I replied.
“As if I would.”
Does she have any idea how much effort it took to get used to this situation?
I can handle it now without overthinking, but when I first became her caretaker, it was a struggle.
“Hm?”
I noticed some of Hinako’s hair was caught in the strap of her swimsuit.
“I’m gonna shift the strap a bit.”
“…Huh?”
As I slid the left strap down, I thought I heard a strange squeak.
“Long hair can be tricky in spots like this.”
“I-Izuki…?”
“Just a sec, I’ll be done soon.”
“…!”
Suddenly, Hinako hopped into the tub with a splash.
Bubbles floated on the water’s surface. At the center, Hinako glared at me, her face bright red.
“Mmph…!”
“Mmph?”
“You… insensitive jerk…!!”
Embarrassed, Hinako hugged herself, hands on both shoulders.
“Insensitive…?”
Coming from someone who used to strip off her swimsuit without a care, that was rich.
The next day.
During a break, I told Tennouji-san that I’d gotten approval for her proposal, and we decided to start our study sessions that very afternoon.
“Prepare yourself, I’ll be drilling you hard!”
“P-Please go easy on me…”
As students headed home, Tennouji-san and I met up at the café next to the cafeteria.
I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d survive this. Tennouji-san was so fired up it was almost intimidating.
“Heh heh… I’ll defeat Konohana Hinako…! This time, I’ll wipe that fake smile off her face…!”
Tennouji-san grinned like a devil plotting mischief.
She’d arrived early and ordered drinks for both of us. The moment I sat down, tea was brought to the table.
“First, let’s set our goals. Mine is to defeat Konohana Hinako in the next proficiency exam.”
Tennouji-san said, gracefully tilting her teacup.
“When’s the next proficiency exam again?”
“One month from now.”
Apparently, Tennouji-san and Hinako’s scores are already neck-and-neck.
If Tennouji-san studies like crazy for a month, she might just pull ahead.
“As for you, Tomonari-san, I expect you to score in the top fifty on that exam.”
“Huh?”
Her sudden declaration caught me off guard.
“Top fifty…? I’m barely below average now. That’s a bit of a leap…”
“No need to worry. You’re being personally tutored by me, after all.”
Tennouji-san puffed out her chest confidently, but I gave her a conflicted look.
Complaining would probably just make things worse. I’d have to trust her and put in the effort.
“You also mentioned wanting to learn manners. Was there a specific reason for that?”
I thought over Tennouji-san’s question before answering.
“When I attended the Konohana family’s social gathering, I realized… I’m still not comfortable in those settings. I want to at least learn enough to not embarrass myself.”
“That’s a commendable mindset.”
Tennouji-san nodded with satisfaction.
“In that case, I’ll teach you manners suited for social gatherings. Table etiquette, conversation skills, and we should probably include dance lessons too.”
“D-Dance?”
“What dances do you know, Tomonari-san?”
Dances, huh?
If I had to pick, maybe the one I practiced for the school festival…
“…The Soran Bushi?”
“Pardon?”
“Sorry, I don’t know any dances.”
Obviously, I couldn’t perform the Soran Bushi at a social event. Well, it might get a laugh, but I’d probably lose my position in the process.
“Then we’ll start with the basics of dance as well.”
Tennouji-san murmured.
“That settles our general plan. Let’s begin the lessons. We’ll study until six, then move on to manners.”
“Yes, please take care of me.”
Six o’clock.
Today’s study session wrapped up smoothly. I’d just finished some textbook problems, and Tennouji-san was now checking my answers.
“…I see.”
After reviewing my work, Tennouji-san murmured.
“You’ve been studying diligently on your own, haven’t you? At this rate, you’ll definitely score higher than before.”
“Thank you.”
Shizune-san’s lessons helped, but Tennouji-san, being a fellow student, knew exactly how to aim for top marks. For the future, broad knowledge and skills might be ideal, but right now, I needed grades that wouldn’t shame me next to Hinako.
“How about you, Tennouji-san? Is this study session helpful for you?”
“Yes, more than I expected. I might actually enjoy teaching others.”
Tennouji-san said, sounding a bit surprised at herself.
Being one-on-one helped us both focus, but I could concentrate because Tennouji-san taught so earnestly.
“Why are you so competitive with Konohana-san?”
The question slipped out before I could stop myself.
“There’s no deep reason.”
Tennouji-san lowered her gaze briefly before meeting my eyes again.
“Just to clarify, there’s no personal grudge between me and Konohana-san. If anything… as the daughter of the Tennouji family, I simply cannot afford to fall behind other students.”
“Is that like a family motto?”
“No. It’s a rule I set for myself.”
Why would she impose such a harsh standard on herself?
As I pondered, Tennouji-san continued.
“This Academy is a microcosm of society. If I lose to someone here, I’ll likely lose in the future as well. I believe the Tennouji Group is Japan’s most outstanding corporate conglomerate. As such, my defeat would contradict my convictions.”
It was a proud way of thinking.
At my old high school, someone saying this would’ve been mocked. But Kiou Academy is a unique environment. Tennouji-san’s words carried weight… and because she’s always so sincere, her resolve felt genuine.
Still, as someone born and raised a commoner, I couldn’t help but wonder.
“…Have you ever found that way of life… exhausting?”
“Not at all.”
Tennouji-san answered instantly.
“As the daughter of the Tennouji family, contributing to its legacy is my duty… and that, in itself, is the happiness I seek.”
Her bold declaration was so very her.
I regretted letting my doubts surface.
“Now, let’s move on to manners.”
Tennouji-san put away the textbooks and began preparing for the etiquette lesson.
“Tennouji-san, I have a request. Could we focus on teaching me table manners first?”
“That’s fine with me, but is there a particular reason?”
“Well… it’s kind of a personal reason.”
I wasn’t confident I could explain it well, so I dodged the question, feeling a bit guilty. Tennouji-san seemed to pick up on it and didn’t press further.
“In that case, Tomonari-san, how about having dinner with me for a while?”
“Dinner?”
“Yes. I’ll teach you table manners through hands-on practice. Fortunately, this academy offers cuisine from various countries, so we can have quite thorough lessons.”
I see. So, I’d be having dinner here at the academy while learning table manners.
It’s an efficient proposal, one I’d love to accept, but I should check with Shizune-san first.
“Let me ask home about it.”
With that, I stepped away, heading to the back of the school building and pulling out my phone.
Izuki-sama, is something the matter?
Shizune-san addressed me with the honorific, as usual.
She was likely playing the part of a servant under me, in case someone nearby could overhear the call.
“Tennouji-san suggested I have dinner at the academy for a while to learn table manners. Would that be okay?”
Understood. There’s no issue with that, but…
Shizune-san paused mid-sentence.
My apologies. Ojou-sama wishes to speak with you. Please hold for a moment.
Hinako?
Did she need something?
Izuki…?
“Yeah, what’s up?”
…Are you coming home late today?
Hinako’s voice carried a hint of disappointment as she asked.
“Not just today. I think I’ll be home late for a while.”
I answered, and Hinako fell silent for a few seconds.
Come back… as soon as you can, okay?
With that, Hinako handed the phone back to Shizune-san.
That’s how it is, so please try to return as early as possible.
“…Got it.”
I discussed with Shizune-san what time she should pick me up, mulling it over.
I mustn’t forget my true purpose. I’m Hinako’s caretaker. Right now, I’m learning a lot from Tennouji-san, but I can’t let that turn things upside down. I need to stay by Hinako’s side as much as possible.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting.”
When I returned to the café, Tennouji-san was already preparing for the next lesson.
She must have asked the café staff, as various tableware was neatly arranged.
“This is quite elaborate…”
“I’m simply matching your enthusiasm.”
Tennouji-san said proudly, puffing out her chest.
“I know it’s a bit late to ask, but is this really okay? It feels like I’m the only one benefiting.”
“We’ve already settled that matter. I’m having a meaningful time in my own way, so there’s no need to worry.”
Tennouji-san said, then continued in a quieter voice.
“Besides… you right now remind me a little of how I used to be, so I couldn’t help but want to meddle a bit.”
Her words made me tilt my head.
“What do you mean by that…?”
“Now then, let’s begin the lesson.”
Brushing off my question, Tennouji-san started the class.

Eight o’clock in the evening.
After Tennouji-san’s lesson, I returned to the Konohana estate in a prepared car.
“I’m back.”
“Good work, Izuki-san.”
As soon as I entered the mansion, I ran into Shizune-san.
“I’ll likely be returning around this time for a while.”
“Understood. May I ask what you learned, just to be sure?”
“Sure.”
As we walked to my room, I explained what Tennouji-san had taught me.
“—That’s about it.”
“I see… We should formally thank Tennouji-sama later. From what you’ve said, she’s teaching you quite thoroughly.”
“…Yeah.”
I felt the same way.
Tennouji-san said she was having a meaningful time too, but from an outsider’s perspective, it was clear I was the one benefiting the most. I’d have to thank her properly again.
“But why did you prioritize learning table manners?”
“Oh, well…”
It was a bit embarrassing, but I figured it was fine to tell Shizune-san.
I explained my reasoning.
“I see.”
Shizune-san nodded, seeming convinced.
“It’s reassuring to know you haven’t forgotten your role as a caretaker.”
“Well… that’s why I’m learning all this from Tennouji-san in the first place.”
At that, Shizune-san gave a satisfied smile.
“Ojou-sama has been wanting to see you, so please head to her as soon as you can.”
“Oh, no self-defense lessons today?”
“Once dance lessons start, they’ll take a toll on your stamina. Considering the future, we’ll lower the priority of self-defense lessons for now.”
After discussing with Tennouji-san, we’d decided to start dance lessons in about a week. Naturally, we couldn’t hold dance lessons in a café, so we needed to arrange a venue first. Since that wasn’t sorted today, there were no dance lessons.
“Also, the dojo has been quite busy lately.”
“Busy?”
When I asked, Shizune-san made a complicated expression.
“After you thoroughly beat the Konohana family’s guards, it seems their pride took a significant hit. Since then, more people have been training in the dojo.”
“…Uh, sorry about that.”
“It’s not your fault. If anything, it was a good wake-up call for them.”
Shizune-san said with a sigh.
“If you ever plan to become a bodyguard for the Konohana family, we can resume self-defense lessons immediately. What do you say?”
“…I don’t have any plans for that, so I’ll pass for now.”
“I see. That’s a shame.”
A shame, huh…
Shizune-san’s tone was hard to read, as usual, but that felt like it had a touch of sincerity.
Wait… is that okay?
Could that kind of life plan be an option?
After helping Hinako with her bath, I returned to my room to prepare for tomorrow’s classes.
“Man, my brain’s fried.”
I set my pen down on the notebook and stretched lightly.
It was eleven o’clock at night. Today had been almost entirely consumed by studying.
“…No, this is exactly the time to push through.”
I picked up the pen again and flipped through the textbook. Tennouji-san had just praised me for making studying a habit. I couldn’t afford to slack off now.
Sometimes, I surprise myself with how diligent I’ve become.
Everyone I’ve met at Kiou Academy is on another level. Being around them has pulled me along, turning daily studying into a habit. At first, I was just following Shizune-san’s instructions, but now it’s my own choice. Shizune-san must have noticed, as she’s stopped nagging me about prepping or reviewing lately.
I’d never put in this much effort before. Not for someone else, not even for myself—just aimlessly going through high school, or so it feels.
“Those guys… wonder what they’re up to now.”
I thought back to the relationships I had before becoming a caretaker.
Once things settle down, I might want to meet up and catch up with them.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
“Come in.”
The door opened, and Hinako stepped inside.
“Huh… Hinako?”
“Mm.”
I was stunned as Hinako let out a small sound.
“You came here alone? And didn’t get lost?”
“Hmph… how rude. This is my house.”
No, no, she’s got some nerve saying that.
Let’s not forget—this girl gets lost even at the academy if left alone.
“Your room’s farther than I thought… Took me, like, thirty minutes from mine.”
“No way it took that long.”
What, was she conquering a dungeon or something?
“…What’re you doing?”
“Prepping for tomorrow. Tennouji-san’s teaching me a lot, but that’s for practical stuff. I’ve gotta keep up with regular classes too.”
Having reached a good stopping point, I turned to face Hinako.
“Did you need something?”
“…Not really.”
“? Then why’d you come?”
At that, Hinako puffed out her cheeks slightly.
“…Do I need a reason to come?”
“No, it’s not like that, but…”
It’s not that she couldn’t, but I wasn’t sure how to handle this.
Since she didn’t seem to want anything specific, I turned back to my studies, keeping her in the corner of my mind.
“Mmm…”
As I scratched away at my notes, Hinako let out a little grumble.
Then, with a flop, she rolled onto my bed.
“I’m… sleeping here tonight.”
“Huh?”
“Sleeping.”
Hinako said it with a slightly firm tone.
“The dining hall’s far from my room, so it’ll be a hassle in the morning. You’d be better off sleeping in your own room…”
“Nuh-uh…”
She was already half-asleep.
I couldn’t help but give a wry smile as Hinako blinked sleepily.
“Izuki…”
“Hm?”
“…Come here.”
“…Alright, alright.”
I set my studies aside and went over to her.
“…Pat me.”
Hinako said, her eyes narrowing sleepily.
“At the social event, you didn’t like it when I patted your head. Is it okay now?”
“…I didn’t dislike it.”
Hinako rolled over, turning her back to me.
“Lately… I’ve been feeling weird.”
“Weird? Are you feeling sick?”
“Mmm…”
When I asked with concern, Hinako puffed out her cheeks again.
It didn’t seem like she was unwell.
I gently patted her head, and for a brief moment, Hinako flinched but soon settled, accepting it. That reaction was new—something I hadn’t seen until recently. She said she didn’t dislike it, but it still made me curious.
“…I’m getting sleepy too.”
As I patted Hinako’s head, I sat on the floor and mumbled.
“…Then sleep.”
“Nah, I’ve gotta carry you back to your room first…”
But as I said that, I really did start to feel drowsy.
My brain must be exhausted from all the thinking today.
Before I knew it, I was swallowed by sleep—
“…Izuki?”
The hand patting her head stopped, and Hinako quietly sat up.
Izuki was beside the bed, breathing softly in his sleep.
Careful not to make a sound, Hinako got up and observed him.
“…This might be the first time I’ve seen his sleeping face.”
Exhausted from her usual act, Hinako often dozed off whenever she could. So while others might see her sleeping face, she rarely got the chance to see someone else’s.
“Was he… tired?”
Now that she thought about it, Izuki had seemed sleepier than usual while studying today.
She knew well how tiring it could be to feel sleepy. Hinako decided to let Izuki sleep as is.
Her gaze fell on the study materials spread out on the desk.
Glancing at the notebook filled with neatly written equations, Hinako’s eyes caught something else.
“This… the caretaker’s manual?”
She picked up the thick book and flipped through its pages.
Originally, there was no such thing as a caretaker’s manual. But with the high turnover of staff, explaining the job verbally became too cumbersome, leading to the creation of this manual.
The manual was marked with sticky notes and highlighters, emphasizing key points to watch out for.
On the memo page for free notes, Hinako saw a list of her favorite ice cream brands written down. Right beside it, in bold handwriting, was a note: “Buy when available and store in the room’s freezer!”
A sharp pang tugged at her chest.
Before the pain could fade, someone entered the room.
“Ojou-sama?”
Shizune approached, looking puzzled.
“The door was open, so I got curious and came to check…”
“…Shh.”
Hinako put a finger to her lips, glancing at the sleeping Izuki.

With that gesture, Shizune understood the situation.
“Honestly, falling asleep before Ojou-sama? He’s a failure as a caretaker.”
Shizune said, but her expression wasn’t angry.
Perhaps she, too, recognized Izuki’s recent efforts.
Izuki was fundamentally diligent. Even without Shizune saying anything, he’d probably wake up and reflect on his own.
“Ojou-sama, shall I escort you back to your room?”
“…Mm.”
Hinako nodded and left the room with Shizune.
“Shizune.”
“Yes?”
“I… feel weird.”
Hinako murmured.
“I’m happy that Izuki’s my caretaker, but… sometimes, when I think about him taking care of me, I feel uneasy.”
“…Feel bad?”
In the past, Shizune might have suspected Izuki was the cause, but not anymore. After over a month under the same roof, she knew Izuki was sincere.
“Are you dissatisfied with Izuki-san being your caretaker?”
“…No way that’s true.”
Hinako shook her head, but her expression was tinged with unease.
Arriving at the room, Shizune opened the door. Hinako stepped inside slowly.
“It’s not true… but that’s not enough.”
Saying this, Hinako sank onto the bed.
Placing an arm over her eyes, Hinako voiced her anxiety.
“Is Izuki only listening to me… because it’s his job?”
Hearing those words, Shizune finally grasped the true nature of Hinako’s unease.
She couldn’t help but feel a fond warmth, though she suppressed any change in her expression.
“Please rest assured.”
In a gentle tone, Shizune spoke.
“Izuki-san isn’t by Ojou-sama’s side merely because it’s his job.”
“…Really?”
“Yes. If you wait just a little longer, I think you’ll understand.”
Originally, Izuki had taken on the role of caretaker simply because he needed the money.
But if money were his only motivation, he wouldn’t have protested to Kagen to return to being a caretaker.
Things might have been different before, but the Izuki of now was different. He approached his caretaker duties with something more than just work in mind.
Hinako was oblivious in the most crucial moments.
It was something that should be obvious with a little thought.
“Still, this is a first, isn’t it? Ojou-sama consulting me about something personal like this.”
“…Is it?”
“Yes.”
Tilting her head with a curious Hmmm?, Hinako tried to recall the past.
Watching her, Shizune gave a soft smile. A feeling akin to watching a daughter grow up welled up in her chest.
“…That’s no good.”
I wasn’t ready to become a mother just yet.
After tucking the now-sleeping Hinako under the covers, Shizune left the room.
A week had passed since I started spending after-school hours with Tennouji-san.
“Good morning.”
Opening the classroom door, I greeted everyone as usual.
The nearby students returned my greeting with friendly smiles, warming my mood slightly as I took my seat.
Lately, though just a little, I felt like I was getting used to the atmosphere at Kiou Academy. Part of it was probably familiarity, but learning manners from Tennouji-san was likely the real trigger. The more I learned about etiquette, the more I noticed how much effort the students here put into it. Wanting to match their efforts had, at some point, fueled my own drive to improve.
“Yo, Tomonari.”
“Morning, Tomonari-kun!”
Taishou and Asahi-san approached me.
“By the way, Tomonari, have you been up to something with Tennouji-san lately?”
Taishou asked out of the blue.
“Heh heh heh… there’s been quite a bit of eyewitness info, you know? Word is, you’ve been meeting up every day after school lately.”
Asahi-san chimed in with a playful grin.
Feeling like they were jumping to some wild conclusions, I decided to set the record straight.
“Actually, Tennouji-san has been teaching me manners lately.”
“Manners?”
Asahi-san echoed, and I nodded.
“It’s like an extension of the study group we did before.”
“Oh, is that all? Here I was thinking you were aiming for a Cinderella story, Tomonari-kun!”
“Sorry to disappoint, but that’s not it.”
I firmly shut down Asahi-san’s outrageous speculation.
“Speak of the devil, huh.”
Taishou glanced toward the classroom door.
Following his gaze, I saw Tennouji-san standing there.
She was looking my way—more specifically, at me—and beckoning with her hand.
Wondering what was up, I headed over to her.
“Good morning, Tennouji-san. Is something wrong?”
“Good morning. Actually, I have a small matter I’d like to discuss.”
A matter to discuss?
“I had forgotten until today, but the café we usually use has a regular closing day. That happens to be today.”
“Oh… I see.”
Normally, we held our study sessions at the café next to the cafeteria after school. With its variety of international dishes, it was perfect for practicing table manners.
“So, should we find another place for the study session… or take a break from the manners lessons?”
“I considered that, but I have a proposal.”
Tennouji-san continued.
“Would you like to come to my house?”
“…Pardon?”
Her sudden suggestion made me tilt my head.
“When it comes to mastering manners, familiarity is the greatest enemy. No matter how seriously you study at first, anyone will naturally relax once they get used to the situation or environment. But that sense of ease comes from familiarity with the setting, not from having truly mastered manners.”
“That makes sense.”
“Indeed. To prevent you from becoming too comfortable, I believe it’s best to change the location periodically. Since this is a good opportunity, why not hold the study session at my house?”
Tennouji-san explained with clear, logical reasoning.
To her proposal, I—
“…And that’s the situation. What do you think?”
During lunch break.
As usual, I met up with Hinako at the old student council building and shared Tennouji-san’s proposal with her.
While I was free to build relationships within the academy, I was still Hinako’s caretaker. It only made sense to get her opinion first.
“…Hmph.”
“Hinako?”
“Hmph, hmph, hmph…”
Unusually, Hinako was deep in thought.
Honestly, I didn’t think it was something to agonize over this much, but Hinako had her arms crossed, her face etched with a serious expression.
“…Izuki.”
“Yeah?”
“…Are you… staying over?”
For some reason, avoiding my gaze, Hinako asked hesitantly.
“No, I’m planning on it being a day trip.”
“…Then, it’s fine.”
Despite her words, Hinako’s expression remained complicated.
“Izuki… Are you having fun with Tennouji-san’s study sessions?”
“Well, yeah. Tennouji-san’s the type who doesn’t go easy even on people she knows, so it naturally keeps me on my toes…”
“…Hmmm.”
People who can be strict even with acquaintances are rare. Normally, you’d worry about being disliked, but Tennouji-san doesn’t have that. She’s probably so confident in herself that she prioritizes her own actions over what others think of her.
That kind of poised demeanor is something I genuinely admire, even setting aside my current position.
As I was lost in those thoughts, Hinako tugged at the hem of my uniform.
“…You’re my caretaker.”
“Huh?”
“Izuki… you’re my caretaker.”
She stared straight at me from point-blank range.
Her refined features filled my vision, and I felt a slight flutter. Even though we live under the same roof, Hinako somehow always smells nice.
“…I know.”
I exhaled slowly to calm my nerves.
Then, I turned my attention to the lunchbox in front of me.
“Since I know, for now… stop sneaking vegetables into my lunch.”
“…Busted.”
My master is as sly as ever.
