Takane No Hana Volume 1 Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Tea Party

Third day of academy life.

When the second period ended and it was break time, Taishou and Asahi-san came over to me.

“Tomonari, how about after school today? Last time you had to leave early, but it’s fine to hang out sometimes, right?”

I smiled in response to Taishou’s question. “I’m free today, so it’s fine.”

“Oh, nice!”

After discussing it with Shizune-san the other day, we agreed that as long as I reported in the morning, I could make plans after school. I should let Shizune-san know by lunchtime.

“Tomonari-kun, is there anywhere you want to go? If not, we’ll just decide ourselves.”

“Well… Since it’s a rare chance, I’ll leave it to you.”

I didn’t really know where Kiou Academy students usually spent time after school, so to avoid making a mistake, I decided to leave it to the two of them.

“Taishou-kun, what should we do? It’s only a day trip, so we can’t go abroad, right?”

“If it’s Taiwan, we could get there in three hours one way… but even if we just had dinner and came back, we’d be out overnight. Better to stay domestic.”

“Ah, then what about Kyoto? The Kyoto bamboo shoots are delicious this time of year.”

“Kyoto, huh. In that case, I know some good places too.”

Listening to the two of them chat so casually… I broke into a cold sweat. Right. I’d forgotten—these two are also from wealthy families.

“Uh, even if I’m free today, I still have to be home by night, so if possible, let’s stick somewhere close…”

“Got it. Then we shouldn’t go too far.”

If I hadn’t stopped them, would I really have been headed for Kyoto after school…?

“How about a cafe on campus? If it’s just to chat, that should be just right, right?”

“Ah, true. That might be good.”

Standing beside Taishou, who agreed, I tilted my head.

“See, there are a few tea-party-style cafes here at the academy. Some are really authentic, but since they’re on campus there’s no dress code, and they’re popular among the students.”

“Is that so… I didn’t know.”

But if we’re going to a fancy place, I’d need to mind my manners. I’ve had etiquette lessons from Shizune-san, but I’m still not confident.

“But since the goal is to get to know each other, we should just go somewhere relaxed. How about the cafe next to the cafeteria?”

“Yeah, that works.”

Asahi-san agreed with Taishou’s suggestion. Inwardly, I was grateful to Taishou. I was relieved we weren’t going somewhere too formal.

“But just the three of us is a little lonely, isn’t it?”

“Yeah~. It’d be nice if there were two or three more people.”

Taishou and Asahi-san said.

“If there’s anyone else you think you could invite, go ahead and call them.”

“Yeah… I’ll think about it.”

Lunch break. I was eating my lunch on the rooftop with Hinako.

“Izuki… next, kelp.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

I picked up some kelp from the bento with my chopsticks and brought it to Hinako’s mouth.

“Mmm… Not bad.”

Come on, it’s way better than “not bad.” As expected of the Konohana family’s Ojou-sama. She’s got a refined palate.

“Hey… at least feed yourself, okay?”

“Nope.”

“If you can act, then you could eat by yourself if you really tried, right?”

“I object—job abandonment.”

When she says that, it’s hard to argue back.

While Hinako was chewing, I switched my chopsticks to eat my own lunch.

“…Izuki.”

“Hm?”

“Are you going out today…?”

“It’s not really ‘going out’, just going to a cafe with some classmates…”

“I’m going too.”

Hinako said this in her usual flat tone. “If you’re going, I’m going too.”

“Well… I don’t mind, but did you get permission from Shizune-san?”

“…I’ll get it now.”

With that, Hinako took her phone from her pocket. Awkwardly, she operated her phone and put it to her ear.

‘Ojou-sama? Do you need something?’

Since she was right next to me, I could hear Shizune-san’s voice too.

“I want to go to the tea party. With Izuki.”

‘…Understood. I was planning to work around Izuki-sama’s schedule today anyway, so there’s no problem with Ojou-sama joining as well.’

That was a lot easier than I expected. Just like me, if Hinako had no social life, people would get suspicious. It seems they’d already anticipated she might make after-school plans.

‘But Ojou-sama, are you sure? Isn’t it almost your limit…?’

“…I’ll be fine.”

After that, some exchange I didn’t really get came through, but Hinako immediately hung up.

“So, that’s that… thanks.”

“Okay. By the way, the members so far are Taishou and Asahi-san—do you know them?”

“…I know their names.”

Her vague reply made me frown. Will she even be able to keep up a conversation with someone she only knows by name?

“Uh… you really don’t have to force yourself to join, you know? This is just a bit of socializing, and if you don’t think you’ll enjoy it, it’s easier not to come…”

“If you’re going, I’m going.”

It’s not the most convincing reason, but if she wants to come, there’s no need to stop her.

When lunch ended, Hinako and I returned to the school building separately, keeping some distance.

“So now we’re four…”

Including Hinako, the group for the after-school tea party was up to four. That seemed like enough, but as I wondered if there was anyone else I could invite, a certain person came to mind.

“She did say she wanted to make friends… I guess I’ll ask her, just in case.”

I headed for that awkward and lonely girl.

It didn’t take long to find my target, Miyakojima Narika.

I already knew from gym class that Narika’s class was 2-B. Once I saw that Hinako had gone back to her class and started her ‘performance’, I headed straight to Class B—and found Narika in seconds.

…She really stands out.

I had expected it, but Narika was spending lunch completely alone. Sitting second from the back by the window, she looked like she was quietly eating her meal.

From a distance, she looked like a dignified beauty, but up close I could see the wrinkles on her forehead and her sharp eyes made her seem perpetually annoyed. No wonder people kept their distance.

Which is why, if possible, I wanted to be the one to approach her…

Just as I thought that, Narika turned to face me.

“…? …Izuki!!”

Noticing me, Narika paused her meal and sprang to her feet. Unable to hold back, she broke into a smile and came right over to me.

Meanwhile, the B Class classroom was in an uproar.

“No way…?”

“Di—Did Miyakojima-san just call someone’s name…?”

Sad rumors floated around, but Narika didn’t seem to notice and walked up to stand in front of me.

As I reflected on whether I’d drawn too much attention, Narika looked at me, eyes sparkling.

“So, what is it!? Did you need something!? B—by chance, I just happen to be free! We can talk about anything, really!”

She’s really coming on strong… She must have been really lonely by herself.

“Uh, can we maybe go somewhere else first?”

“O—of course! I’ll follow you anywhere!”

Under the gaze of countless eyes, I left the classroom with Narika.

If Hinako suddenly did anything unexpected, I wanted to be close enough to handle it, so I didn’t want to go too far from Class A. I led Narika behind the school building where it was quieter and turned to face her again.

“So, there’s a lot I wanted to talk about. I haven’t explained the other day’s situation either.”

“The other day… Oh, right! I still haven’t forgiven you!”

All of a sudden, Narika’s face turned red and she looked furious, as if she’d snapped back to reality.

“Y—you were supposed to take care of me, so why… Why did you suddenly become Konohana-san’s caretaker? Y-y-y-you traitor!!”

“Come on, traitor… I used to be your caretaker, but that was a long time ago, right?”

“Just because it was a long time ago doesn’t mean you can just write it off like that! I wanted to live with you again!!”

“Eh… really?”

My surprise must have shown, because Narika immediately realized what she’d just said, and her face went bright red.

“W-w-waaah?! Forget that! Pretend I didn’t say it! Erase it from your memory!”

“A—alright… It would help if you calmed down a bit.”

Is she worse than she used to be…? I just feel sorry for her at this point.

“About what I mentioned yesterday… To put it simply, I got adopted.”

“…Adopted?”

“Yeah. My current father is the president of a mid-sized company. And that president has ties to the Konohana family, so while I’m attending Kiou Academy, I’ve been working at the Konohana house.”

“Wait a second. Why would that mean you have to work at the Konohana house? Just because there’s a connection?”

I knew she’d say that. Calmly, I recalled the backstory I’d desperately memorized last night.

“You know about being a ‘manners apprentice’, right?”

“Yeah. Living and working with a wealthy family to learn proper etiquette. It was popular in Japan during the Meiji era, and in Europe it’s been a custom since medieval times.”

She really studies hard. She’s a Kiou Academy student after all, so she’s way smarter than me.

“What I’m doing at the Konohana house is basically the same thing. I know nothing about etiquette, so I’m learning from them in exchange for helping out.”

“I see. So that’s how it is.”

Looking back, Shizune-san really thought up a good backstory. It’s even perfectly forged, so if anyone checks into it, it’ll hold up to a certain degree.

“S—still… You could have done that at my house too, right?”

“Well, I only thought of the Konohana house first, that’s all…”

“…Hmm.”

Narika frowned.

“I’d rather you not tell anyone about this.”

“I get it. Adoption is a fragile position.”

I had other reasons I wanted her to keep it secret, but Narika conveniently interpreted it her own way.

This should be enough about me and Hinako.

“By the way, Narika. Are you free after school today?”

“After school? Well, I’m free.”

“If you’d like, want to join us at the cafe?”

“At the cafe? Th—th—that’s, could it be, a tea party!?”

“Yeah, something like that.”

“P—please, let me join!”

Her eyes sparkled as she spoke.

“Ah, to be honest, I’ve always admired tea parties…! I’ve heard Kiou Academy students deepen their friendships at tea parties, but I’ve never once been invited… I thought I’d graduate without ever experiencing one…”

“I—I see… That’s, well, rough.”

Every time I talk to Narika, I feel sorry for her.

“By the way, so far it’s me, Taishou from Class A, Asahi-san, and Konohana-san.”

“…Eh? There—there are other people?”

“Yeah. It’s officially my welcome party, after all.”

“I see… I heard you just transferred in the other day.”

Apparently, transfer students at Kiou Academy aren’t that rare, but they still attract some attention. Narika seemed to know I was a new transfer.

“I want to join, but I’m nervous… I might not be able to talk well…”

“But you talk to me just fine.”

“That’s because… you know the old me, and I don’t need to put on a front with you.”

“Then maybe you don’t need to put on a front with others either?”

“If I could do that, I wouldn’t be having trouble!!”

Narika said, tears forming at the corners of her eyes.

“And… it’s not just my problem.”

“What do you mean?”

“It sounds arrogant to say it myself, but the Miyakojima family is a big one. Because of that, most students are intimidated by my family background… It’s not just that I’m awkward; people are scared of me from the start.”

“I see.”

That really isn’t just her issue.

“In that sense, Konohana-san is amazing. Even though I lost you to her, I have to admit… I truly envy how well-liked she is. Normally, with a background as big as the Konohana family, people would be intimidated… but even so, lots of people approach her without hesitation. How does she get people to adore her like that…”

Looking down, Narika spoke.

I think I know why Hinako is so well-liked. —It’s her act. Hinako is always performing as the perfect Ojou-sama, someone everyone could admire. But that’s not something I can say publicly.

“I don’t know why Konohana-san is so popular… but if you talk to her yourself, maybe you’ll find a clue.”

“Yeah. And since you’ll be there, I’ll definitely join the after-school tea party.”

As if steeling herself, Narika clenched her fist.

“B—but, will it be okay? What if people are annoyed I’m there…”

“I think it’ll be fine. Probably.”

“Probably…?”

“Definitely.”

I tried to reassure Narika with a sigh.

Neither Asahi-san nor Taishou dislikes Narika. In fact, Asahi-san once told me she had tried to talk to Narika to get to know her better. So I’m sure no one will mind if Narika joins.

After parting with Narika and heading back to Class A, I heard two girls talking further down the hall.

“Th—thank you so much!! For your help!”

“No thanks necessary.”

The blonde, ringlet-haired girl replied with dignity to the girl bowing to her.

Seeing her striking appearance, I found myself saying her name. “Tennouji-san?”

“Oh, aren’t you…”

Tennouji-san’s eyes narrowed as she looked at me.

Come to think of it, our last encounter ended in a bit of a mess. It’d be a problem if she remembered that, so I quickly tried to find another topic.

“So, what were you doing?”

“Nothing major. I just helped carry some materials needed for class.”

Even when she collected my lost wallet, I thought so, but Tennouji-san is more kind than she seems. Apparently, she often goes out of her way to help people.

“By the way, I heard. You’re a transfer student, aren’t you?”

“Yes. I transferred in the day before yesterday. I’m Tomonari Izuki.”

Only now realizing I’d never introduced myself, I gave my name.

“So, Tomonari-san… I heard you arrived at school with Konohana Hinako. It’s become a bit of a rumor, you know.”

Right, Tennouji-san is openly antagonistic toward Hinako. It’d be a hassle if she started to see me as an enemy too, so I should clear things up.

“It’s true that I went with her on the first day so she could show me around, but we came separately yesterday and today. I just have ties to the Konohana family, that’s all—nothing more.”

“Is that so? But aren’t you part of the Konohana clique too?”

“The Konohana clique?”

When I tilted my head, Tennouji-san explained.

“That’s just what I call them. There are a lot of students at Kiou Academy who practically worship Konohana Hinako, so I use that term for them.”

“I see…”

So basically, like a fan club. Kiou Academy is surprisingly down-to-earth in some ways.

“…Tennouji-san, do you dislike Konohana-san?”

“I—I wouldn’t say I dislike her! It’s just, because of Konohana Hinako, my own influence has faded!”

In a flustered tone, Tennouji-san replied.

“I’ll admit Konohana Hinako’s abilities. She matches me in looks and grades. Of course she’s going to be popular.”

“That’s… some roundabout self-praise…”

I wish she could give Narika a little of that confidence.

“But seriously, Konohana Hinako… Even though I’m the daughter of the Tennouji Group, she gets all the attention! The Tennouji Group is just as big as the Konohana Group, and in fact our history is even longer! So really! I should be! The one everyone at Kiou Academy is focused on!!”

With forceful conviction, Tennouji-san glared at me.

“If you’re not part of the Konohana clique, you agree, right!?”

“Uh? Well… yeah, I guess…”

“Right, right!! I’m so annoyed! Why does she get all the attention instead of me!? She acts like a perfect Ojou-sama, but I bet at home she’s just a lazy good-for-nothing!”

She’s not wrong… but I kept my mouth shut.

“…Is it really just because she’s good with people? But really, someone of high birth should act with dignity like me. Smiling too much ruins your authority, and helping people too much doesn’t help them. Besides, the other day, that girl—”

While Tennouji-san muttered under her breath, I voiced what I was thinking.

“Tennouji-san, you sure know a lot about Konohana-san.”

“Wha!? Th-th-th—that’s totally normal!”

Tennouji-san denied it with a red face.

“Me and Konohana Hinako are rivals! That’s why it’s only natural I know all about her! ‘Know your enemy and know yourself and you need not fear the result of a hundred battles,’ right?”

While she was quoting proverbs, I thought a little about Tennouji-san herself.

…Narika mentioned this. When you’re from a big family, people get intimidated.

As the daughter of the huge Tennouji Group, maybe she’s actually lonely, just like Narika.

But if it’s Hinako, with her equally impressive background, she could probably build an equal relationship with Tennouji-san. Maybe that’s why Tennouji-san is so fixated on Hinako.

“Um… are you free after school today?”

“After school? Well, yes, but why do you ask?”

“We’re planning a tea party at the cafe next to the cafeteria. Konohana-san will be there too, by the way.”

“Konohana Hinako!?”

Tennouji-san’s eyes went wide in surprise.

“Wait, are you trying to recruit me into the Konohana clique…!?”

“Why are you so suspicious? I’m just inviting you normally.”

She’s way too conscious of Hinako.

“Well, if that girl insists that I come, I guess I could join…”

“Uh, actually, Konohana-san hasn’t said anything…”

“…Is that so?”

“Yes.”

“…”

“…”

“…”

“…Well, actually, maybe she did mention it, so could you please join us?”

“F—fine! Then I’ll attend!”

It was getting awkward, so I told a gentle lie. Tennouji-san’s eyes sparkled. She really did want to join the tea party.

“‘Know your enemy and know yourself and you need not fear the result of a hundred battles,’ after all!”

Yeah, you just said that.

And then, after school. Taishou and Asahi-san were speechless when they saw the group that had gathered at the cafe.

“I did say invite whoever you want, but… this is one crazy group.”

Taishou said, looking at the faces of the noble girls gathered here.

Around the white, round table, six boys and girls were gathered. The original group—me, Taishou, and Asahi-san—plus Hinako, Narika, and Tennouji-san, who I’d brought along.

None of these three noble girls were the type to just go along with the mood. Hinako, performing as the perfect Ojou-sama, had a gentle smile; next to her, Narika was acting suspiciously nervous, and Tennouji-san was confidently sipping her tea.

“Hey, Tomonari-kun. How are you connected to all these people? How do you even know these amazing people after just three days?”

“I mean, it just happened…”

Hinako aside, I invited Narika and Tennouji-san because I thought it’d be a good chance to build friendships. But thinking about it calmly, this really is an impressive lineup. It’s probably rare for the daughters of the Konohana, Miyakojima, and Tennouji families to all gather in one place.

“Come to think of it, this is Tomonari-san’s welcome party, isn’t it?”

Setting her cup down, Tennouji-san looked at me.

“Sorry for being late, but congratulations on your transfer. Kiou Academy is a tougher school than most, but if you graduate, it’ll definitely pay off in the future. I look forward to seeing your success.”

“Th—thank you.”

Even as I fumbled, I managed to thank her. When someone as dignified as Tennouji-san says that, it makes me happy.

“There are some people here I haven’t spoken with before, so let’s introduce ourselves again. I’m Tennouji Mirei, daughter of the Tennouji Group.”

With introductions starting, Taishou and Asahi-san followed.

“I’m Taishou Katsuya. My family’s in the shipping business.”

“I’m Asahi Karen. My family’s in retail—mainly electronics stores, I guess.”

Next were Hinako and Narika.

“I’m Konohana Hinako. Pleased to meet you.”

“I—I’m Miyakojima Narika. Um, nice t’meetchu.”

She flubbed her words, but I pretended not to notice. Hinako and Tennouji-san’s faces didn’t change. Maybe they didn’t notice, or maybe they just didn’t care. On the other hand, Taishou and Asahi-san looked puzzled, as if they wanted to say, “No way, Miyakojima-san would never flub her words.”

“I’m Tomonari Izuki. My family runs an IT company.”

Finally, I stated my name and family business.

Once everyone was done, Tennouji-san spoke up.

“Let me say upfront, there’s no need to worry about my family background. Please speak to me as you normally would. …Taishou-san, Asahi-san, weren’t you usually a bit more casual?”

“Ugh… Well, if you noticed, no point in pretending.”

“Ahaha, yeah. Guess I’ll just talk like usual then.”

They looked a little awkward for a moment, but quickly relaxed.

After that, Tennouji-san turned to Hinako.

“We meet at tea parties from time to time, don’t we, Konohana-san?”

“That’s right. I’m always grateful for your help, Tennouji-san.”

“…Are you being sarcastic…?”

With a strained smile, Tennouji-san replied. But Hinako didn’t seem to notice, serenely sipping her tea.

Both Narika and Tennouji-san were strikingly beautiful girls, but Hinako still exuded a level of elegance above them. The way she gracefully tilted her cup had everyone’s eyes on her.

“Um, Konohana-san! We’re in the same class, but… do you remember me?”

“Of course, Asahi-san. You’re always the mood-maker of Class A. Thanks to you, it’s a much more comfortable place.”

“A—ahaha, thanks. …Wow, just hearing that from you makes me really happy.”

Asahi-san tried desperately to hide her grinning face with both hands.

“What about me? How about me, Konohana-san!?”

“I know you too, Taishou-kun. Your friendly attitude toward everyone is one of your most attractive qualities.”

“Ohhh…! I feel like I just gained so much karma…!”

I don’t think his karma actually increased, but he looked overjoyed.

“Grr… Why isn’t she saying anything to me…!”

With Hinako having monopolized everyone’s attention, Tennouji-san was clearly displeased. I thought it was just the way the conversation went, but just in case, I decided to change the topic.

“Narika, have you ever talked to anyone here at a tea party before?”

“Uh, no. I barely even go to events outside school.”

She means she barely gets invited, not that she barely attends…?

Just as I was thinking that, I realized everyone was looking at me.

“…Narika?”

Someone said. It seemed they’d noticed I was calling Narika by her first name.

As I wondered if I should have explained my relationship with Narika first,

“I-Izuki and I met when we were ten. Because of that connection, I got invited to this tea party.”

“Wow, really?!”

Asahi-san was surprised by Narika’s explanation.

Narika lowered her head. She was just embarrassed, but her stiff expression might make others think she was upset. It’s probably things like this that lead to her isolation.

I was the one who invited Narika here. I should follow up for her.

“It seems there’s a misunderstanding, but Narika really isn’t scary at all. She just spent most of her childhood at home, so she’s not great at conversation.”

“…Is that so?”

“Yes. Those rumors you heard—they’re all false.”

I said this clearly to the wide-eyed Asahi-san.

“Izuki…!”

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Narika looked at me, teary-eyed. I hoped this would help her make some friends…

“I believe the Miyakojima family runs a sporting goods company, doesn’t it?”

Tennouji-san asked Narika.

“Y-Yeah. How do you know that…?”

“You’re too modest. There’s not a student here who doesn’t know of the Miyakojima family. And if you look into those rumors, it’s obvious they’re not true. …I don’t often see you at social events, so what do you usually do?”

“W-what I usually do…? Mostly training at home…”

“Training?”

“My family has a dojo. Training there is part of my daily routine. Lately, I’m often asked to try out our new products too.”

“I see. It sounds like you lead a fulfilling life.”

Tennouji-san sounded impressed.

Next to them, Asahi-san was talking with Hinako.

“Since we’re here, I want to ask you too, Konohana-san. What’s life like at home? Do you just study all the time?”

“Studying is important, but I also make time to relax. I read… and sometimes eat snacks.”

“Oh, so you like snacks too, Konohana-san? What kind do you eat?”

“Let’s see… Maybe scones.”

Liar. You eat potato chips all the time.

“Come to think of it, Konohana-san and Tomonari-kun are connected through your families, right?”

Asahi-san asked Hinako.

“Yes. My father and Tomonari-kun’s father are acquaintances.”

“So you two had never met until recently?”

“That’s right. But now, as you can see, we spend time together like this.”

Hinako answered with a smile, and Asahi-san nodded along, looking amused.

“Sounds suspicious~ Are you sure that’s all there is between you two?”

“Come on, Asahi. That’s a stretch,” Taishou said with a wry smile.

“Eh, but… family connections are basically the same as an arranged engagement, right? It’s classic for that to turn into romance. Maybe you two are already pretty close…?”

From her tone, it was clear she was joking. But when Asahi-san asked that, Hinako just quietly sipped her tea without saying a word.

…Hey. Why’d you suddenly go silent?

It felt like a loaded silence. Even Asahi-san, who’d started out joking, gradually turned serious.

Tennouji-san frowned, suspicious, while Narika stared at me, looking pale.

“Uh, no, it’s really not like that,” I said, since Hinako wasn’t answering at all.

“As Konohana-san mentioned, our families are connected, but there’s nothing special between us. Besides… I’m not really a match for Konohana-san.”

On one side, you have the heiress of the famous Konohana Group, and on the other, just the heir of a mid-sized company. Even my supposed social status is a world apart.

“Whether you’re a match or not… Tomonari-kun, you’re busy with your studies anyway, right? It’s not the time for that.”

“Pretty much.”

I smiled at Asahi-san’s words, and next to me, Narika looked down.

“Hmph… Liar.”

Narika mumbled softly, only loud enough for me to hear.

If she’s keeping her voice down, she must accept the need for secrecy, but she’s still unhappy about me working at the Konohana house.

Still, overall, things seem to be going well. Narika seems to have blended in with the group, and except for her relationship with Hinako, Tennouji-san is friendly too. Looking back, I’m glad I invited both of them to the tea party.

Relaxing a bit, I took a sip of tea from my cup.

At that moment, I felt Tennouji-san’s gaze.

“Tomonari-san, it looks more elegant if you bring the cup to your lips rather than leaning your head to the cup.”

“I-I see… Thank you.”

Letting my guard down, I’d slipped up right away.

Looking closer, I noticed everyone else at the table was drinking their tea that way. …I’ll need to be more careful. Unlike the others, I’m living here under a false identity.

“Tomonari, before coming here, you went to a regular school, right?”

“Yeah. So I’m not really confident about my manners…”

I nodded in response to Taishou’s question.

“I remember a classmate once told me regular schools have all sorts of fun traditions. For example… splitting the bill?”

“Splitting the bill?” Taishou tilted his head.

Everyone else looked confused too. Guess I have to explain.

“Splitting the bill means everyone pays their share at restaurants… Does no one at Kiou Academy do that?”

“Nope. Isn’t it faster for one person to just pay for everyone?”

“That may be true, but doesn’t that mean one person ends up treating everyone?”

“If it bothers you, just pay next time. But generally, no one cares about who pays. Whoever invites everyone, or just feels like paying, handles it.”

Is it really that casual…? I get super conscious when someone treats me.

“Oh, and there’s also that thing… borrowing stuff and not giving it back.”

“Right, right. That’s when you just keep what you borrowed. Why would you steal it though? Just buy your own.”

“Uh, no, that’s not really a cultural thing…”

I cut into Asahi-san and Taishou’s conversation to correct them. Even among us regular folks, that almost never happens, and if it does, it’s usually an accident.

“Didn’t things like that happen at your old school, Tomonari?”

“Let’s see…”

Since it was asked out of pure curiosity, I tried to think of something they’d find interesting.

“How about the three-second rule?”

“The three-second rule?” Asahi-san tilted her head.

Since no one seemed to know, I explained.

“It’s usually used about food. If you drop something, you can still eat it as long as you pick it up within three seconds.”

“What…?”

“It’s not a big deal, but… I do it sometimes.”

With that, I grabbed a cookie from the center of the table. It’d be a waste to drop a whole cookie, so I bit off half to make a small piece.

“If you drop something like this while eating…”

I deliberately dropped a piece of the cookie on the table and quickly picked it up.

“…then as long as you pick it up within three seconds, you can eat it. That’s the rule.”

“Wow… People really think of some interesting things.”

Is she making fun of me? Well, maybe not, but it’s still awkward to be genuinely impressed. Honestly, it’s just bad manners.

I was about to say it’s probably best not to copy this when—

“Like this?”

Hinako, sitting across from me, mimicked me by dropping a cookie on the table. Then she popped it into her mouth and chewed.

“Y-Yeah, like that…”

Hinako’s adorable smile made my voice tremble as I confirmed it.

Everyone was shocked to see Hinako, usually so graceful and elegant, doing something so down-to-earth.

At that moment, Tennouji-san cleared her throat.

“Commoners do come up with interesting things from time to time… but I can’t say this three-second rule is very proper.”

She said this, setting her cup down.

“But honestly, I kind of get the feeling. Three seconds probably doesn’t matter. Maybe I’ll try it next time,” Asahi-san added.

“It’s not a hygiene issue. It’s just improper,” Tennouji-san chided. Asahi-san, not being too serious herself, quickly agreed, “Yeah, it is kind of improper.”

The tea party continued on smoothly after that.

The first tea party ended peacefully, without any real issues.

After leaving the cafe, we walked toward the academy gate. Several black cars were waiting in front of the gate.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Ojou-sama.”

“I told you, stop calling me Ojou-sama…”

Asahi-san said with a wry smile as she got into the car, driven by her family’s servant.

A bit later, Taishou got into the same car.

“Huh? Taishou-kun, you’re riding with Asahi-san?”

“Yeah. Our houses are close by, and we’ve known each other forever.”

“Our family servants take turns driving us home.”

Just like my supposed connection with Hinako, it seems Asahi-san and Taishou are connected through their families too.

“Well then, we’ll head out first.”

“Today was fun. See you tomorrow.”

The car carrying the two of them drove off.

Nearby, Tennouji-san’s car was waiting as well.

“Well then, I’ll be off as well.”

With a small nod, Tennouji-san said goodbye. Several suited servants stood by Tennouji-san. Unlike Asahi-san’s servants, these ones looked more like bodyguards, quietly keeping watch.

“K-Konohana Hinako!”

“Yes?”

Called by name in a tense voice, Hinako responded with her usual gentle smile.

“U-um, this is the first time I’ve had a private tea party with you… but it was actually pretty nice! N-Next time, maybe we can talk more about school and family business and stuff!”

“Yes, if there’s a chance, I’d love that.”

Tennouji-san had smoothly secured a promise for next time. Looking delighted, Tennouji-san quickly straightened up and turned to me.

“Ahem… And also, Tomonari-san.”

With a pointed cough, Tennouji-san addressed me.

“You kept your back straight today. You looked much more dignified that way.”

I froze for a moment at her words.

“Th-thank you.”

I hadn’t expected to be complimented, so my response was delayed.

With a little smile, Tennouji-san turned and got in her car.

“You two seem to get along rather well,” Narika muttered.

“It’s just being polite.”

“No, Tennouji-san’s a straightforward person. You should just take the compliment. …To be praised by Tennouji-san on your third day here is really something.”

Narika didn’t seem too happy as she said this. Unlike Tennouji-san, it didn’t seem like she was honestly congratulating me.

“Good work today, Ojou-sama, Izuki-sama.”

At that moment, two black cars pulled up and someone called out to us.

“…Shizune-san?”

Shizune-san, in her maid uniform, appeared and bowed before us.

“You must be Miyakojima Narika-sama. I am Tsumuri Shizune, a servant of the Konohana household.”

Narika, not expecting to be addressed, flinched in surprise.

“I believe you’ve already heard about Izuki-sama’s situation from him. Our families have a close relationship, so I’d appreciate it if you could keep this matter confidential.”

“Y-Yeah… I understand. Izuki explained everything, and I’m fine with it. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”

“Thank you.”

Shizune-san gave a respectful bow. It seemed she’d come out specifically to talk about this.

Narika knows I work at the Konohana house. So even if Hinako and I ride home together, she won’t find it suspicious.

“Narika, your ride isn’t here yet?”

“Yeah. It should be soon, though…”

Just as she said that, Narika went quiet. She pulled her phone from her pocket and put it to her ear. It seemed she had a call.

After the call ended, Narika let out a small sigh.

“Something wrong?”

“Yeah… Looks like there’s traffic and my ride will be a little late. But they’re close, so I’ll head over to meet them. You two can go ahead and leave.”

Even if she said to go ahead… Having recently been caught up in a kidnapping, I was uneasy about leaving Narika alone.

“Shizune-san, I’ll walk Narika to her car.”

Both Shizune-san and Narika looked surprised.

I turned to Narika. “Your car’s nearby, right? I’ll go with you.”

“Th-that’d make me happy, but… are you sure?”

I looked to Shizune-san, who nodded as if she understood my intentions.

“Understood. Ojou-sama has a busy schedule, so we’ll head back to the house. I’ll arrange another car for you, Izuki-sama, so please use that.”

With that, Shizune-san looked to Hinako, who was already getting in the car.

“Ojou-sama, is that alright?”

“Yes.”

Hinako replied with a smile.

“Thank you.”

I expressed my thanks and went to see Narika off.

Once the car had left the academy, Hinako let out a deep sigh.

“I’m sooo tired…”

“Good job today.”

Having dropped her Ojou-sama act, Hinako let out a languid sigh. She knelt on the back seat and looked out the rear window.

“Mmm… Izuki is with someone else…”

“If you didn’t like it, you didn’t have to let him go.”

“…Should I have stopped him?”

“That was careless of me. It would’ve been unnatural for Ojou-sama to stop Izuki in that situation.”

Izuki’s offer to walk Narika was a gentlemanly one. The perfect Ojou-sama couldn’t block that just because of her own feelings.

“Hey, Shizune… do you know the three-second rule?”

Hinako asked with a proud grin. Thinking Shizune wouldn’t know, she seemed ready to explain, but—

“Yes, I do.”

“…Huh?”

“It’s a well-known superstition, and there’s a lot of research about it. There’s that famous study by a female high school student in America who even won an Ig Nobel Prize for it. Though in the U.S. it’s the five-second rule.”

“…Mmm.”

Hinako was obviously sulking, realizing Shizune knew more than her.

Shizune gave a little smile at Hinako’s reaction.

“Really, ever since Izuki came… Ojou-sama, you’ve changed.”

“…You think so?”

“You’ve attended tea parties before, but always on Kagen-sama’s orders. Wasn’t this the first time you joined one of your own accord?”

“Yeah… maybe so.”

Hinako replied in a tone that made it sound unimportant.

Shizune looked at her with concern.

“Ojou-sama… How are you feeling?”

“…Maybe it’s about time.”

Hinako replied listlessly.

“Haaaah…”

As Hinako’s car drove off, Narika let out a deep breath.

“What’s up?”

“Ah, well… I finally feel like I can relax…”

It looked like her tension had finally eased.

“You said you weren’t good at talking to people, but you seemed fine today.”

“That wasn’t because of me. I just barely managed because everyone helped me out…”

Well, that might be true. In particular, Asahi-san and Tennouji-san looked out for Narika. Asahi-san made an effort to include her in the conversation, and Tennouji-san kept asking her questions to help her get involved.

“Izuki… thank you, really.”

Suddenly, Narika spoke formally and thanked me.

“If you hadn’t been here, I probably would’ve been alone until graduation.”

“Come on, it wouldn’t be that bad. I just helped a little.”

“No, I know myself. Today will be a turning point in my life.”

As she said this, Narika looked at me.

“After all, Izuki… you’re my hero. When we were kids, you showed me the outside world… and this time, you saved me from loneliness.”

That’s a bit much. I really don’t think I did anything that amazing.

“That’s exactly why… it’s unfair.”

Narika lowered her eyes as she spoke.

“Unfair. …Unfair, unfair, unfair! Konohana-san is unfair!!”

“…You’re still going on about that?”

“Of course I am! I’ll say it as many times as I want! This is just too much! We finally reunited, so why do you have to be at the Konohana house?!”

“Well… it’s just how our parents arranged things.”

“Ugh…! You say you’re training in manners, but what else do you even do!? Aren’t you working too!?”

“Sort of. But it’s just small chores, really.”

“Konohana-san doesn’t need anyone taking care of her! She’s already perfect!”

If only she were perfect… But of course, I couldn’t say that out loud.

“…So, when does this ‘training in manners’ thing end?”

“It’s undecided for now…”

“Then, when it’s over, would you come to my house? Wouldn’t that be nostalgic for you too!?”

It would, but I’m supposed to stay with the Konohana family until graduation, so it probably won’t happen.

“If I feel like it.”

“That’s just being polite!”

Well, I’m not Tennouji-san, but I can be polite sometimes.

“That’s all for today’s training. Good work.”

“Y-yeah, good work…”

In the Konohana family’s dojo, I wiped sweat from my brow as I spoke. Even on the day of the tea party, training wasn’t canceled. In fact, today’s session was more intense than usual, and I was completely worn out.

“Izukiii. Bath…”

Just then, the dojo doors opened and Hinako appeared.

“…It’s that late already?”

It was ten p.m. I wanted to get cleaned up too, so I headed to the bath—but…

“Ojou-sama, I have something to discuss with Izuki-san, so could you please go back to your room first?”

“…Okay. Don’t take too long.”

Hinako nodded at Shizune-san’s words and left the dojo.

“You wanted to talk?”

“Yes. I won’t take much of your time.”

Shizune-san spoke in a formal tone.

“I don’t want to keep Ojou-sama waiting, so I’ll keep this brief… Lately, Ojou-sama’s health has not been good, so please be careful and keep an eye on her.”

“Her health? She seemed fine at the tea party…”

Did I make her overdo it?

“Strictly speaking, I believe she’ll be unwell soon.”

“…?”

Not sure what she meant, I tilted my head.

“Just be mindful. Now, please head to Ojou-sama’s room.”

With that, Shizune-san started cleaning the dojo.

I wasn’t sure what she meant, but since she said to be careful, I would.

I went to Hinako’s room, changed into swimwear in the changing room, and entered the bath.

“Ahh… Izuki…”

“Sorry for the wait.”

I approached Hinako, who was already getting woozy, and immediately started washing her hair.

“Any itchy spots?”

“Nuthin’~…”

Washing Hinako’s hair had become a daily thing, so Shizune-san had taught me how to do it. I warmed her scalp with water in my palm, shampooed carefully, then applied conditioner, gently working it in.

“Still, Shizune-san really made something amazing.”

As I washed Hinako’s hair, I looked back. There was a private shower room installed there. It was like having a bathroom inside the bathroom. Shizune-san had arranged for it, saying, “You can’t wash your body properly in a swimsuit,” so there was now a private room just for washing.

“Hinako, could you hand me that bucket over there?”

“O-kay~…”

Is that a pun on ‘OK’ and ‘bucket’…?

I asked Hinako to pass the bucket, which was about to fall into the tub. But Hinako dropped it on the way.

Clang, it hit the floor.

“…Ah.”

Hinako, as if an idea had struck her, quickly picked up the bucket.

“Three-second rule.”

“…Well, I guess so.”

I had no idea how to respond to Hinako’s smug grin.

“This… is kind of fun.”

“If you say so, I’m glad I showed you.”

I’d rather she not do it in public, though.

“After we parted today… what did you and Miyakojima-san talk about?”

“What did we talk about…? Just about how the tea party was fun, I guess.”

“…Hmm.”

Hinako replied in a way that made it hard to tell if she believed me or not.

“Izuki… you’re my caretaker.”

Hinako murmured softly.

“…Don’t go anywhere.”

“Huh?”

Her voice was so soft I could barely hear it. But even if I asked again, Hinako didn’t answer.

Slowly, Hinako leaned her body against mine. Caught off guard by her sudden closeness, I froze.

“H-Hey… You’ll catch a cold if you fall asleep in the bath.”

I speak as I lightly sway my body. But Hinako says nothing.

“Hinako…?”

Something is clearly wrong. When I look at her face, Hinako is sweating, letting out pained breaths.

“—Hinako!?”

After Hinako collapsed in the bathroom, I immediately carried her to her room and called for Shizune.

At first, I thought she had just gotten overheated, but her breathing was rough and she looked to be in pain. After gently wiping Hinako down, I had Shizune check her condition.

“It’s a slight fever,”

Shizune said, gazing at Hinako, who was lying in bed.

“For now, let’s just let Ojou-sama rest here in her room.”

“…Okay.”

Shizune had already prepared everything needed for nursing. While I was out of the room, Shizune quickly changed Hinako into her pajamas, then gave her some tablets with water. Watching those practiced movements, I felt a faint sense of discomfort.

“Is something the matter?”

“Ah, well… You seem very calm.”

“Yes. This happens on a regular basis.”

“On a regular basis…?”

As I wondered, Shizune explained to me.

“The reason Ojou-sama collapsed is because of the stress from constantly acting.”

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what those words meant.

“Stress from acting… You mean, from that role she always plays?”

“Yes. …She’s playing a persona so far removed from her true self. Of course it causes stress.”

Shizune said this matter-of-factly. Her words struck me like a blow.

It’s true that Hinako is always strictly keeping up her act. But whenever she got home, she would immediately revert to her usual lazy self. She did seem annoyed by it, but I never thought she was actually suffering. I figured it might be suffocating during her act, but I never imagined it was enough to make her collapse.

“W-Wait a second. Why are you being so nonchalant about this? If it’s enough to make her collapse, how can you just let this go…?”

“Even if she collapses, it’s only a mild fever that goes away in two or three days. There’s no need to be overly concerned.”

“No, but, if it’s making her collapse like this, shouldn’t she just stop acting—”

“—Know your place.”

Shizune glared sharply at me, her eyes cold.

“This is the consensus of the Konohana family. It’s not something that can be changed by personal feelings… and of course, Ojou-sama herself is aware of that.”

Hinako is aware. Those words echoed in my mind.

The noble excuse of “for Hinako’s sake” crumbles away. She’s pushing herself this far, knowing full well what it does to her. So then, who am I supposed to be angry at? …Where should I direct these feelings?

“When Ojou-sama is in the public eye, she’s fully immersed in her role. That’s why, when she’s at the estate, she lets herself relax. The reason Ojou-sama seems lazy when she’s home is, you could say, simply because she’s worn out from acting.”

“So in other words, Hinako is listless when out of the spotlight, as a reaction to all the acting?”

“That’s right. Of course, part of it is just her true nature… but on days off, when she doesn’t have to keep up the act, she’s always more energetic.”

I never knew. That Hinako had circumstances like this.

“Izuki. If you don’t go to bed soon, you’ll have trouble in class tomorrow.”

“…I’m supposed to go to the Academy even though Hinako’s collapsed?”

“Of course. Given your academic standing, you should avoid missing classes as much as possible.”

“But I’m Hinako’s caretaker…”

“Leave it to those best suited. I’m fully familiar with how to care for Ojou-sama when she collapses.”

As she said this, Shizune looked straight at me.

“I’ll focus on nursing her, so Izuki, please return to your room.”

The next day. I went to Kiou Academy alone.

“Yo, Tomonari! Yesterday was fun, huh!”

“…Yeah, it was.”

As I sat at my desk, Katsuya cheerfully called out to me.

While I was talking with Katsuya, Karen came over as well.

“By the way, Konohana-san’s not here today, huh.”

“Well… it’s probably the usual.”

Listening to Karen and Katsuya’s conversation, I tilted my head.

“The usual?”

“Yeah, guess you didn’t know. Konohana-san skips school now and then. I heard she helps with the family business or something… Konohana-san’s got it rough too, y’know.”

I just nodded absently at Katsuya’s words, thinking to myself.

—So that’s the story they’re telling everyone.

It seems Hinako’s regular fainting spells are kept a secret from classmates. Maybe even all the staff at the Academy are being kept in the dark.

But if that’s the case—nobody’s going to worry about her.

She already hides her true self behind an act.

Who could ever really be by Hinako’s side?

When she’s hurting, who can actually be there to help her?

With those mixed feelings, the day at the Academy came to an end.

“Good work today.”

As I got into the car that had come to pick me up, Shizune, sitting in the passenger seat, greeted me.

With Hinako absent, I had the wide back seat all to myself. Still, I didn’t feel good about it.

“Shizune. How’s Hinako’s condition…?”

“She still needs to rest.”

In other words, she hadn’t recovered yet.

“…How long do you think it’ll take for her to get better?”

“Let’s see… at this rate, I think she’ll recover by tomorrow or the day after. Luckily, the weekend is starting, so she should be fine by Monday.”

I was relieved it was Friday. But… no, that’s not it. When Monday comes, Hinako will have to go to the Academy again. Which means she’ll have to act again.

Why does it have to be like this?

A certain name—of someone who definitely knows the answer—flashes through my mind.

“Um… will Kagen-san be coming?”

When I asked, Shizune answered without looking at me.

“Kagen-sama is at work. He’s at the main estate right now.”

“But, Hinako’s collapsed, you know?”

“Kagen-sama is the head of the Konohana Group. He’s not in a position to just drop work because Ojou-sama is unwell.”

Being told so clearly that we live in different worlds… it felt just a little unfair.

Common sense just doesn’t apply here. No matter what I say, I’m brushed aside as missing the point.

“Then… what about Hinako’s mother…?”

To that question, Shizune paused for a moment before answering.

“…She has already passed away.”

That was not the answer I expected. Come to think of it, no one ever mentioned Hinako’s mother before. If she’d already passed, that’s probably why.

“………I see.”

There’s still so much I don’t know. …Of course there is. I haven’t been her caretaker for long. It can’t be helped that there’s a lot I don’t know.

But—her father, Kagen-san, doesn’t come, and her mother has already passed away.

So, just how many people are there who can actually be by Hinako’s side while she’s suffering?

Could I… become one of those people?

“…Um. Can we call off today’s training?”

“No. You still have much to learn, Izuki.”

“Then, at least finish earlier than usual. I’ll work extra hard to make up for it.”

When I said that, Shizune looked at me, just a little surprised.

“…Understood. In that case, let’s go at one and a half times the usual pace.”

It was going to be a hellish schedule, but I had no choice.

When we got back to the mansion, Shizune did exactly as she said. Preview, review, etiquette training, self-defense. I did it all at a faster pace than usual, to the point my head ached, but in exchange, I got my free time two hours earlier than normal.

“That’s all for today’s training.”

“Th-thank you… Can I go see Hinako now?”

“Of course. I’ll join you later, so please take care of her until then.”

I left the dojo, quickly showered in my room, then headed to Hinako’s room.

The only light in Hinako’s room was the orange night lamp, so it was dim. Careful where I stepped, I approached Hinako’s bed.

“Ah, Izuki…”

Hinako, who was lying in bed, noticed me.

“Sorry. Did I wake you?”

“It’s fine… I’ve just been zoning out…”

According to Shizune, she’d been asleep nearly all day, so she must have gotten plenty of rest.

“Thanks… for coming…”

Out of nowhere, Hinako thanks me.

“I’m glad… you came…”

“…Of course. I’m your caretaker, after all.”

“…Ehehe.”

Hinako, who had looked so anxious and lonely, gives a relieved smile.

“If there’s anything you want, just say so.”

As I say this, Hinako turns toward me and speaks.

“Then… squeeze my hand, please…”

Hinako slowly reaches out her hand.

“No problem.”

Just as she asks, I take her hand.

Her palm is so small. At the Academy, Hinako is prouder and more accomplished than anyone, but her hand—just touching it feels like it might break, it’s so thin, so small, so delicate.

“…Did she fall asleep?”

Hinako is quietly breathing in her sleep.

Still holding her hand, I look around. Being all alone in such a big room must make the loneliness even worse. It’s only natural to feel terribly lonely when you’re sick.

That’s exactly why someone has to stay by her side and take care of her.

…I wonder if I’m good enough for that.

That thought crosses my mind.

Is Hinako really reassured just by having me by her side? Even if I am her caretaker, it’s still just a job. I have no idea what she truly thinks of me.

An easily replaced servant. A convenient lackey… I really hope she doesn’t see me that lightly. But our closeness is too much for just a servant, and yet, we’re way too composed for it to be romantic. It’s comfortable, but I’ve found myself wondering about this odd distance between us.

…But thinking about it now won’t help.

At the very least, I know she trusts me.

If that’s the case, then I should just respond to that trust for now.

“Hinako… everything’s going to be okay.”

Hinako’s amber hair clings to her forehead, damp with sweat. I gently brush her hair aside and stroke her head.

“Nn…”

She smiles softly at that.

“……………Papa…”

When I hear that tiny sleep-talking voice, I finally understand my role as her caretaker.

—So that’s how it is.

I realize how Hinako sees me. At the same time, the strange distance between us finally makes sense.

—Family.

Hinako must be starved for family.

I think back on everything. Letting her rest her head on my lap, taking baths together… I guess Hinako has been seeking that warmth of family from me all along.

“…I get how you feel,” I murmur as I stroke Hinako’s head. “Family… is something you yearn for, huh.”

I think of my own family. Both my parents were pretty hopeless as people… but that’s exactly why those moments of kindness stand out so much in my memories. When they tended to my injuries. When they bought me a birthday cake. I still resent them for running out on me in the night, but the memories themselves will never disappear.

Hinako, the Konohana heiress, has probably always lived at a distance from her family. Her mother’s already passed away. Her father, Kagen-san, is always at the main estate for work and rarely comes home. The people in this mansion are all employees hired by Kagen-san. For someone like Hinako, who hates stiff, formal atmospheres, it can’t have been easy.

“Izuki.”

A voice calls to me from behind. When I turn, Shizune is standing there.

“How is Ojou-sama’s condition?”

“…She just fell asleep.”

Shizune, watching Hinako’s sleeping face, gives a small nod.

“Izuki. There’s something important I need to talk about, so could you step outside for a moment?”

“Understood.”

Seeing her serious expression, I obey. But just as I try to stand up, Hinako squeezes my hand tightly.

I meet Shizune’s eyes, wordlessly.

“…It can’t be helped. I’ll talk to you here.”

“…Please do.”

I nod to Shizune, who speaks in a small voice, my own expression complicated.

“What I want to talk about is the situation with the Konohana family. …Do you remember what Kagen-sama said before about the reason Ojou-sama has to act?”

“If I recall, it was because the Konohana Group’s business is struggling, so they want to find a good marriage prospect for her, right?”

“That’s correct. But that’s only the secondary reason.”

“Secondary…?”

As I wonder, Shizune continues.

“The biggest reason Ojou-sama has to act is so the Konohana family can take in a son-in-law.”

So, not to find a husband for her to marry out, but rather, to bring a man into the family as their heir.

“There’s a legitimate heir to the Konohana family. Kagen-sama’s eldest son, Konohana Takuma—Ojou-sama’s older brother.”

“She has an older brother…?”

“Yes. But the two of them are far apart in age and barely know each other. Takuma-sama started living at a separate residence when Ojou-sama was five.”

It seems her brother, like her father, is also distant from Hinako.

“Even so, there’s been doubt for some time as to whether Takuma-sama is truly fit to inherit the Konohana Group. If he doesn’t, the family heir will be whichever man marries into the family through Ojou-sama.”

So that’s why they want a son-in-law—to have a suitable heir.

“In the Konohana family, not just the head but the wife is also involved in business. In other words, if a son-in-law becomes the heir, Ojou-sama will also be heavily involved with the Group’s management. That’s why she has to act—so she can be a perfect, respectable person, admired by all. If she were to get a bad reputation, it would cause friction in the Group, which could affect the fate of the company and cause many to suffer as a result.”

As Shizune says this, she looks at Hinako’s sleeping face.

—Konohana Hinako is not an ordinary girl.

The family’s total assets are about 300 trillion yen. Anyone in this country would know the Konohana Group—a true financial conglomerate. She is its heiress.

“Do you understand now? What Ojou-sama is carrying on her shoulders.”

“…Yeah.”

Just the other day, I thought I had to help her simply because she was suffering. That wasn’t exactly wrong. But before anything, I should have understood her circumstances.

“Am I… not supposed to do anything, then?”

“If you say you want to help Ojou-sama, it’s not my place to stop you.”

Her reply surprises me.

“But yesterday you told me to know my place…”

“Yes. Which is why—know your place, and support Ojou-sama accordingly. That is your role as her caretaker.”

Staring straight at me, Shizune speaks, then turns and leaves the room.

After watching the door close quietly, I look back at Hinako.

“Know my place, and support Hinako…”

I repeat Shizune’s words in my mind.

There are a few conditions for Hinako to be able to stop acting. First, for her brother Takuma to inherit the family. If that happens, Hinako can marry out, and she won’t have to be involved in the family business.

Second, even if the son-in-law becomes the heir, as long as Hinako isn’t involved in the business, it doesn’t matter if her true self is revealed—the Group won’t be affected.

But neither of those are things I can do. I’m just a hired hand. There’s no way I could overturn the Konohana Group’s traditions or policy.

Still, even so—

“The caretaker’s role…”

There is something I can do. As her caretaker, I can keep supporting Hinako.

“The role of the caretaker is to protect Hinako’s perfect Ojou-sama image for the public. In other words, to quietly help ensure her true nature never comes out.”

I recall Kagen-san’s words. He said the caretaker’s job is to protect Hinako’s reputation, but… I don’t think that’s all it is.

I’m sure—the true role of the caretaker is to be there for Hinako, to help her relax. To heal the exhaustion brought on by her act. To be someone Hinako can be her true self with.

If that’s the case—then even I can do that.

“…Let’s do this.”

Seeing Hinako suffering from her fever overlaps with memories of my own childhood, being nursed by my parents. As she sleeps, still clutching my hand, Hinako looks so precious to me.

I want to protect her. I want to be kind to her. She needs to be treated with kindness. Because Hinako is carrying something unimaginably heavy on such a small body.

Someone has to be kind to her.

If she collapses from exhaustion, then I’ll just have to heal her fatigue. If it’s for that—I’ll give her the warmth of family, too.

“Hinako… I’ll do my best, okay?”

Still holding her small hand, I make that vow.

However, due to family reasons, Hinako has to play the role of the “perfect young lady” at school. Wanting to protect her, Itsuki takes care of her in a very caring manner. Eventually, Hinako begins to fawn on Itsuki with all her might… “Now…if Itsuki isn’t around, I would hate it.” This is a love story that begins with a cute young lady with a gap that transcends the master-servant relationship.
