When I started a new game in a galge world, I had memories of having already romanced all the heroines, and now it’s a total mess Volume 1 Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Common Route 1

As soon as the first period ends and the teacher leaves, my classmates slump onto their desks with a collective sigh.

The class was tough. Basic subjects are only an hour long, but they’re packed with dense content, assuming we’ve prepped beforehand, so it’s hectic. Plus, the difficulty is sky-high since they pull from past entrance exams of top universities.

I slump onto my desk too. I wish they didn’t stick so faithfully to the setting in this regard, but it’s not like the class itself wore me out. It’s the exhaustion from endlessly pondering how to improve my relationships with the heroines. And the futility of not reaching a single conclusion.

I’m being pressured to choose someone, but picking without feelings is dishonest. Even if I chose to save my own skin, the two I didn’t pick would probably stab me.

What the heck am I supposed to do?! I lament inwardly before lifting my head. My classmates, who were sprawled out moments ago, have already bounced back, chatting animatedly with their new friends. The lively exchanges happening all around give off the vibe of a rose-colored academy life, and I can’t help but feel jealous.

“Riku?”

Hearing my name, I glance to my side and see Yui looking at me with a concerned expression.

“You’ve looked exhausted since this morning. You okay?”

You all are the reason I’m not okay at all. But since Yui and the others aren’t at fault, I force a smile and reply.

“I’m fine.”

“Really?”

Yui leans in closer to read my face. Her silver hair and emerald eyes, with that fairy-like beauty transformed into something adorably gyaru, come dangerously close. The overwhelming cuteness of a real-life heroine nearly stops my heart, and I avert my gaze.

“Really, I’m fine.”

“Okay. If it gets tough, just say so, alright? I’ll pamper you like a mama.”

“Uh… well, if it ever comes to that, I’ll take you up on it.”

“Yup! I’ll ‘give birth’ to you anytime!”

That’s where she’s going with this…? She’s seriously planning to play mama? I know it’s a joke, but there’s like a 20% chance she’s serious, and that’s terrifying.

More than that, I’m surprised Yui’s acting so normal. After yesterday’s chaotic situation, she’s behaving like nothing happened.

Curious about her state of mind, I glance at her, and Yui suddenly lets out a soft chuckle.

“What’s with the sudden laugh? That’s creepy.”

“Don’t call it creepy! What, you don’t need your front teeth or something?”

“Sorry, my front teeth are super important.”

At that, Yui bursts into bright laughter. Unlike before, her tone is clearly 100% joking, so it’s not scary. But when Yui acts this normal, she just looks like an insanely cute girl, which is its own kind of problem.

“Haha, yeah, I guess suddenly laughing would seem creepy.”

“Why were you laughing?”

“Well, I just felt some eyes on me.”

Following Yui’s words, I look around and notice a few classmates sneaking glances at her.

Well, that makes sense. It’s only the second day since enrollment. With a beauty like Yui, it’s natural people would stare. It’s no surprise she’s drawing attention.

“Back in the day, I used to get annoyed, thinking, ‘They’re staring at my foreign-looking hair and eyes like I’m some freak.’ But I was totally wrong.”

“Yeah, they’re just looking because you’re cute.”

Yui’s pale face flushes bright red.

“Y-Yeah, exactly. So it’s a happy thing… ugh, no way! I know you didn’t mean anything by it, Riku, so I tried to play it off, but I can’t!”

“Come on, you’ve gotta play it off. Saying you’re cute is embarrassing for me too.”

“No way! My heart skipped a beat when you called me cute! Are you trying to make me feel like a gal game heroine with this cliché exchange?!”

“No, I’m not!”

“I know, I know! I was just trying to dodge with a joke!”

Me blurting out that she’s cute, and Yui getting flustered over it, is so painfully cliché it’s almost cringe, but it still feels sweet and ticklish. Yui seems to feel the same, and we both fall silent, a restless, sugary atmosphere settling between us.

This is bad. I need to say something before it gets more awkward.

“Uh, well, if you’re this popular, Yui, I bet Wakana and Himeno are too~”

The moment I say that, Yui’s face, red as a boiled octopus, turns pale as a squeezed squid.

“They’re popular, alright.”

Her icy voice and emotionless expression make it clear I’ve stepped on a landmine.

“After you left yesterday, Riku, they were bragging about their charms. Himeno apparently has guys standing there dazed by her elegance and beauty, and Wakana’s pure-idol looks and approachable personality are already a hit with both guys and girls.”

“H-Huh, so that’s what you talked about after I left…”

“They were fighting so much. And it was all in these quiet, low voices, like a real women’s brawl. It was so uncomfortable I tried to forget it.”

Now I get why she seemed so normal. It was too unpleasant, so she blocked it from her memory.

“What even was that five-hour fight, Riku?”

“Five hours…? By the way, can I just ask how it ended?”

“They agreed that whoever you choose wins, and grudges are fair game.”

“Grudges? Not no grudges?”

“Very much grudges.”

There’s not a hint of a lie in Yui’s words.

“Riku♡”

“W-What’s up?!”

Yui’s sudden shift to a syrupy, coaxing tone sends a chill down my spine, making my voice crack.

“You’ll choose me, right, Riku♡”

“W-Well, I’m still kinda…”

“Still… huh. Okay. I’m a good woman, so I’ll wait for now.”

“Uh, how long will you wait, exactly?”

“Still is still. But I don’t think it’ll be long~”

“Got it…”

“Yup, keep that in mind♡”

With her sweet, coaxing voice delivering a veiled threat, the bell for the next class rings.

***

A blank notebook sprawls before me.

I couldn’t focus on the lesson at all, my mind replaying my conversation with Yui.

Her reaction when I mentioned Wakana and Himeno. The phrase “grudges are fair game.”

In the game, the three of them were precious friends who supported each other’s love, but now they’re so at odds it’s suffocating…

It’s ironic for the source of their discord to say this, but it’s such a shame their friendship is falling apart. If I could mediate somehow… An idea for reconciling them pops into my head.

If I recreate something the three of them did together, memories of when they got along should stir some change in their hearts. Those happy emotions will resurface, and they’ll want to be friends again.

The easiest option would be the lunch break volleyball event. In the game, it was a fun event where everyone played together, with a still of them all smiling brightly. It’s surely etched in their memories as a joyful moment.

This is it. This’ll work.

The fact that I so easily came up with a solution to the impossible task of reconciling these three feuding girls makes me realize I truly am the protagonist, Minato Riku.

Alright, let’s invite them… Wait, am I seriously worrying about meddling in the heroines’ reconciliation when I might get stabbed? No, don’t think about it. If they make up, the “grudges are fair game” situation will surely turn around for the better.

I glance up to check the time and notice the class is already wrapping up, with the teacher erasing the blackboard.

“After this, first-years will have health checkups, and in the afternoon, there’s the club activities introduction, so classes end here for today. You all look exhausted after just second period, but starting tomorrow, we’ll have six periods. Plus, next week, the academy’s unique special assignments begin, so make an effort to get used to classes now.”

As the teacher leaves with a satisfied grin, the air fills with barely audible grumbles, and the classroom shifts to break-time chatter.

With private conversations now allowed, I immediately try to invite Yui to volleyball but hesitate.

“Let’s all play volleyball together despite our messy situation!” How am I supposed to say that with a straight face?

But nothing starts if I don’t speak up. It’s heavy, but I have to say it.

“Yui.”

“What’s up, Riku?”

“Wanna go to the courtyard during lunch and play volleyball?”

At that, Yui’s eyes sparkle.

“What?! Yes! I’m so in! Wooow, I’m super excited!”

I look away from Yui’s glowing, glossy face, radiant like rice in a high-end rice cooker commercial.

I can’t say it. She’s so excited—there’s no way I can tell her I invited two people she’s on bad terms with… but if I don’t, it’ll be worse later.

“Uh, Yui. Actually…”

“Hm? Oh, sorry, I’ll hear you later! Gotta go to the changing room for the health checkup! See ya, Riku, I’m pumped for volleyball!”

With that, Yui dashes out of the classroom.

Common Route 2

Holding a volleyball I swiped from the gym storage above my forehead, I stretch my arm and toss it. The ball soars into the blue sky, loses momentum, and falls back, which I catch overhead.

Despite my heavy heart, the sky is clear and cloudless. The pleasant spring weather feels like the perfect day for outdoor activities.

I hold the ball at chest level and scan the courtyard.

Sakuramiya Academy’s courtyard is less a courtyard and more a small park. A stylishly curved walkway—does it need to be that fancy?—encircles a neatly trimmed grassy field. It’s easy to imagine people spreading out picnic blankets for lunch, families playing badminton, or dogs chasing frisbees. It’s that open and inviting.

The courtyard seems to be a popular lunch spot. Even though I came straight here after finishing my health checkup early, there are already over ten people. Some are eating lunch, others are passing a volleyball in a circle like I plan to, creating a lively, refreshing atmosphere.

And this fun space is about to turn into a stomach-churning one…

My steps feel heavy as I step onto the grass.

I haven’t told Yui we’re playing as a group of four. For Wakana and Himeno, I asked two guys from their class I ran into during the health checkup to pass on the message: “Minato Riku said let’s play volleyball in the courtyard at lunch.” So none of them know we’re all playing together. I could’ve told Wakana and Himeno, but leaving Yui as the only one in the dark felt like it’d spark trouble, and honestly, I was afraid they wouldn’t show up if I was upfront.

It feels like I’m deceiving them, and the guilt stings. If they think I lured them out like bait, I might actually become bait, and that’s terrifying.

But it’s necessary for reconciliation, so I drag my heavy feet to claim a spot for volleyball.

While tossing the ball alone, waiting for the three, a cheerful voice suddenly calls out.

“Hey! Riku-kun!”

I catch the ball and turn toward the voice to see Wakana waving, signaling for a pass.

She’s taken off her blazer and rolled up her shirt sleeves, standing out vividly against the blue sky and green grass. Her youthful, sparkling aura is so dazzling I can barely look at her. As a proper gal game heroine, her citrusy, refreshing sweetness makes my breath catch.

“Yo, what’s up?”

As Wakana approaches and her appearance becomes clearer, I’m struck again by the reality of a gal game heroine standing before me.

Her face is a given, but her figure is stunning too. Her grapefruit-sized chest strains against her shirt, her waist is so slim it cinches her skirt and blouse, and the curve of her hips is practically begging to be traced. Her long, radiant legs stretch from her skirt, and there’s not an ounce of excess fat anywhere. It’s as if her body has no unnecessary flesh for movement, perfectly toned yet neither skinny nor muscular—just the pinnacle of a healthy, feminine physique. Her allure feels almost sinful.

Wakana’s appearance is flawless in every way, but her standout trait is her aura. Like a Hyuganatsu citrus, harvested in April or May yet named for summer, she exudes a sweet-tart, refreshing vibe that could make anyone fall in love just by being near her. If you fed the concept of “first love” into an AI, it’d spit out Kisaragi Wakana.

“Riku-kun, why didn’t you pass? Oh, wait, is it that kind of vibe? Oh no, that’s kinda… nice…”

Wakana’s refreshing citrus aura shifts into something thick and sultry, like freshly made marmalade jam. The charm that had drawn me in vanishes, replaced by a sudden chill.

“Nice how?”

“Like, being ignored feels nice. Getting the cold shoulder makes me all hot and bothered.”

“You talking about, like, heat of vaporization or condensation or something?”

“Well, with all the brain chemicals and stuff getting secreted, it’s definitely chemical.”

I tried to brush it off, but she came back with a heavy response. To change the subject, I toss the ball slightly behind her head.

“Here’s your pass!”

Wakana takes light, nimble steps backward, positions herself under the falling ball, and softly tosses it back with her elbows.

I can’t help but let out an impressed “Nice!” at how she gently returns such a tricky, sudden ball.

I return it with a soft ball of my own.

“Hehe, alright, my turn to send one!”

Wakana sends a fast ball veering to the side with a receive.

“Whoa!”

I stretch out one arm, barely managing to pop the ball high into the air.

“Not bad, Riku-kun!”

She sends another tricky ball, so I return one just as tough. She sends another, and I send it back. The exchange continues, and the intense movement heats up my body, making it fun.

“Okay, even I’m struggling with that one!”

“This one’s tougher!”

We trade light jabs, laughing and sending challenging balls back and forth.

The breeze whisks away my sweat, feeling amazing. Wakana’s vibe shifts back to refreshing, amplifying the exhilaration.

“Oh, I sent a weak one!”

I accidentally send a floaty ball and brace myself for Wakana’s attack.

“Haha, no need to get so defensive~ I’m not aiming for you, Riku-kun.”

Wakana says this, then leaps toward the slowly falling ball, arches her body like a bow, and slams the ball with full force.

The ball rockets past my face at terrifying speed. I whip around to follow it and see Himeno standing there, her brows furrowed.

“What’s the meaning of this?”

Himeno, who dodged it by tilting her head, glares at Wakana with a look that could kill.

“Nothing much. Just a little miss, maybe.”

“Right. If you hadn’t aimed for my face, you might’ve hit me.”

“Yeah, I should’ve considered that you’d be ready to dodge since you’d aim for the face too, Himeno.”

The once cheerful courtyard turns so cold it feels like our breath might show. People in the courtyard start quietly slipping away from the toxic atmosphere. I knew this would happen and prepared myself, but it’s still suffocating.

“Riku? Care to explain?”

Himeno’s voice is so sharp with anger that anyone could tell she’s furious.

“I invited everyone to play volleyball together.”

“Yes, I figured as much. But you know, I wouldn’t think, ‘Let’s play volleyball with my boyfriend’s fling and his girlfriend!’ Especially after we fought yesterday.”

Himeno’s too right… But I have to do this.

“Y-Yeah, I get that. I know I’m doing something crazy, even if we set aside the girlfriend stuff.”

“Good~ If you didn’t realize that, even I’d have to give up on you, Riku-kun.”

Thank goodness she understands… But the situation is still a mess.

“Wait, seriously? No way, I totally get it.”

“Riku-kun, you really wanna throw your life away, huh~ Got it~”

“Just kidding! It’s a joke, a joke!”

“Yeah, totally~”

I wipe the cold sweat off my brow. That was close—I almost said something dangerous, unable to resist the instinct to flee this situation. In other words, this is so painful I can’t even think straight.

“So, what’s the deal with calling us here?”

Turning at the chilling voice, I see Yui standing there, visibly irritated.

Okay, why do Wakana, Himeno, and Yui all sneak up from my blind spots? And so stealthily I don’t even notice? It’s so creepy I might burst into nervous laughter.

“Can’t answer, Riku-kun? By the way, my hand’s already on the holster.”

“I can answer. I can, so please don’t draw that yet…”

“Then spill it.”

Feeling like a prisoner awaiting a verdict, I respond.

“So, like, in the past—or maybe the future—you guys were all really close, right?”

“That’s an old story, but I’ll admit it.”

“Exactly. You were so close back then, so it feels like such a waste that you’re not now. I thought if we all had fun playing together, you’d want to be friends again.”

I gauge their reactions, and all three nod slightly.

Huh? They actually get it?

“Riku, can I say something?”

I nod, and Yui speaks in a cute tone laced with murderous intent.

“Who do you think you are to say that♡”

…Yeah, I totally get it. I think the same.

“Look, I’d love to get along with Himeno and Wakana too. But as long as they’re rivals who might steal you, Riku, it’s impossible. We were best friends, so I don’t hate them… no, scratch that, I do hate them. I can’t stand girls who make eyes at you, and after yesterday’s fight, I really can’t stand them. They’re second only to criminals on my hate list.”

“The cause of our feud is you, Riku. You cheated and didn’t choose me. If you want to mediate, you should at least get our forgiveness first, then choose someone.”

Her perfectly reasonable point stabs me right in the chest.

“That’s harsh, you guys! Riku-kun’s just trying to help us get along! Let’s be friends, Himeno, Yui! He’s only thinking of us, and now you’re scaring him and making him feel bad! It’s okay, Riku-kun. I’m on your side—me, and only me!”

Wakana’s words reek of point-scoring. Himeno and Yui, noses twitching as if filled with that stench, visibly tense with irritation.

“Wakana, you done?”

“Hm? What’s that?”

“Alright, let’s throw down.”

“Fine, let’s do it.”

“Bring it on.”

My legs tremble at the murderous aura, but I muster my courage and speak.

“H-How about volleyball?”

“Sure thing, Riku!”

“Yes, let’s do it now!”

“Can’t wait to get started!”

Their dark, beaming smiles fill me with vague unease, but since they seem willing to play, I thank them and go to grab the ball.

Returning, I see the surreal sight of the three standing silently in a circle, keeping their distance. I take a deep breath to calm myself.

The air is awful. But somehow, I’ve managed to get them to play volleyball.

It’s fine. If they remember those happy feelings, it’ll spark a change in their hearts… right? Yeah, it’ll definitely be fine!

“Alright, here we go!”

Getting close enough, I force a smile and toss the ball to Yui.

Yui waits for the ball to descend slowly, then swings her leg hard as it reaches her knee.

With a loud crack, a sharp ball rockets toward Wakana, who dodges, avoiding a direct hit.

“Uh… let’s not start with a volley shot. Or, like, ever?”

“Sorry, Riku. I’m so bad, the ball flew off somewhere.”

“The ball flying off isn’t the issue here.”

“Wakana, you didn’t catch it, so go get it.”

“Huh? Yui’s the one who hit it, so shouldn’t she go get it?”

“Let’s not bicker like kids… I’ll get it.”

I head off to grab the ball, escaping the uncomfortable atmosphere.

Forget creating a friendly vibe—this is just going to be an endless game of targeting each other, not volleyball.

Maybe this is impossible… No, it’s too early to give up.

Thinking of a way to salvage this, a great idea hits me.

“Please, let’s try volleyball one more time.”

All three purse their lips, clearly reluctant.

“It’ll probably just be us hitting each other.”

“Yeah, so how about I take on all of you? Let’s try it once.”

That’s my brilliant idea. If they’re on the same team, they won’t target each other, and we can play the volleyball from their memories. Plus, teaming the heroines against me as the enemy is perfect. If I put up a decent fight and lose, it’ll foster team unity and shared success.

Perfect. I’m proud of this plan. If only they’ll agree to it.

“Why do I have to team up with my love rivals? That’s just gross.”

It’s the expected reaction, but I have to beg.

“I get how you feel, but please! I just really want to play volleyball!”

“W-Wait… you’re that desperate? I get you’re set on it, but isn’t this volleyball obsession a bit much? Your volleyball thirst is kinda scary, Riku.”

My desperation earns me looks like I’m some kind of weirdo. It’s humiliating, but I grit my teeth and bear it.

“But I wanna do it! I have to!”

“Uh, okay… fine, let’s do it.”

Now they’re giving me pitying looks. They naturally group up in front of me, but is it really out of kindness, like, “We’ll play volleyball for you”? The vibe is shifting to volleyball, and their hostility seems to ease, but this is its own kind of pain.

“So, Riku-kun, what are the rules?”

Wakana’s tone is like an older sister bending down to meet my eyes, and I clench my teeth in momentary humiliation. But I quickly force a smile.

“We’ll figure that out. For now, let’s warm up with some passing.”

I’m pretty heated, but I suggest this to warm up both our bodies and the mood. They all nod easily, so we start passing the ball around.

The blue sky fills my view as the ball falls, obscuring the sun. I stretch my arms to toss it, and the ball arcs softly through the air. Repeating this simple act of passing loosens my tense emotions and body, and I vividly feel the stress-relieving effects of exercise.

It seems the same for them, as the air starts to relax. We pass in silence for a few minutes, but as we focus on the moving ball and stop overthinking, our tongues loosen.

“Himeno, here it comes.”

“Got it. Yui.”

“Oh, sorry, Riku, that was a weird ball.”

“Yeah, it was.”

“Saying ‘yeah, it was’ is kinda weird, no?”

A few more minutes pass, and as we fully immerse ourselves in volleyball, our chatter grows, and the atmosphere becomes friendly.

“Himeno, you could’ve caught that one, right?”

“No way. Even I’d struggle with that.”

“Haha, I could’ve caught it easy.”

“That’s because your athletic skills are off the charts, and you want me to say that, don’t you?”

“Caught me! Oh, wait.”

“Wait, what?”

“Just, like, we had this kind of exchange before, didn’t we?”

When Wakana says that, they all seem to recall something, letting out an “Ohh~”

“Now that you mention it, the first time we hung out as friends was playing volleyball, wasn’t it?”

“That was fun, wasn’t it?”

“Yeah, totally~”

Finally, they’re reminiscing, and I mentally pump my fist.

It’s going great. Exactly as planned. They’re probably already feeling like they want to be friends again.

“Are we just gonna keep doing this?”

“You mean the one-versus-three thing Riku mentioned?”

One versus three, huh? I suggested it, but things are going so well now, maybe we shouldn’t change it. It feels like their friendship might recover as is.

“Maybe it’s fine like this? I’m having fun as is.”

“Yeah, a one-versus-three match would be such an easy win it’d be boring.”

My ears twitch at Wakana’s words. As their meaning sinks in, a simmering anger bubbles up.

An easy win? Like I’d definitely lose? Huh?

“Yeah, exactly. Winning like that wouldn’t even feel good.”

“Right, it’d feel like bullying, and that’s no fun.”

Their words flip my competitive switch, and all my calm flies out the window.

“Let’s do three versus one.”

I catch the incoming ball and declare it.

“Wow, Riku-kun, you’re suddenly all in.”

“Court’s about the size of a badminton court, first to ten points. No net or official court, but obvious net violations or out-of-bounds are no good. You guys play by normal rules; I get up to two touches. Sound good?”

“Uh, sure, but isn’t that super disadvantageous for you, Riku, with the same court and net rules, plus fewer touches?”

“I could handle even worse odds.”

“Hehe, ‘I could’? Alright, if you’re cool with it, let’s do it.”

“Get in position. You guys keep serve rights.”

I hand the ball to Wakana and drop into a receiving stance.

“Ooh, you’re fired up. Guess I’ll get serious too.”

Wakana grins, steps outside the imaginary court to serve, and the other two take their positions.

“Here it comes.”

Wakana tosses the ball high, takes a running start, jumps, and smacks it at its peak.

The jump serve, free of grudge-fueled malice, is slower and weaker. Still, it’s powerful enough to compete at a pro level.

It’s tough to receive, but the narrow court and near-straight trajectory make it manageable.

I hit the incoming ball with my arms, cleanly receiving it, then step toward the floating ball, leap, and swing my arm to spike it down. The spike lands perfectly, earning me a point.

I’ve got this. With my athletic skills, I can totally win.

I keep scoring—feints, blocks, you name it—until I hit ten points in a row. The win cools my competitive fire, but as my tunnel vision clears, I realize the air has turned sour.

“…Was that fun, Himeno?”

“If I were a bit better, it might’ve been more fun. You seemed bored, though, Yui.”

“Hmph.”

“Hmph? What’s that supposed to mean? You’re not trying to make me say it was boring, are you, Yui?”

“If you’re throwing it back at me, you’ve got no right to complain.”

I screwed up. They were having a relaxed, friendly time, and I started a serious one-versus-three match and crushed them. Of course the mood’s gone cold.

“I think the one who started it is to blame.”

“Petty girls don’t get the guys, you know.”

“I’m fine. I’ve got Riku, so other guys don’t matter.”

“Huh?”

As the tense air returns, I notice Wakana, lost in her own world.

“Wakana, what’s up?”

“Losing one-versus-three was so humiliating… it felt amazing. Thanks, Riku-kun! I’m set for today!”

Her vaguely disturbing comment makes me and the other two recoil.

“Wakana, you’re seriously creepy.”

“Huh? How? If anything, Yui’s just as bad, isn’t she?”

“I’m not creepy. Don’t lump me with you and Himeno.”

“Don’t drag me into this.”

Sparks start flying, and their bickering continues until lunch break ends.

Common Route 3

“Sorry for the misunderstanding.”

“No worries, no worries. The literature club meets in the library, so drop by for a trial if you feel like it.”

“Thank you.”

I decline the literature club member’s invitation and step out of the library into the hallway. I was only hiding in the quiet library because the volleyball fiasco lingered, but it must’ve looked like I was interested in the club, which made things super awkward.

Walking down the shadowed hallway as the sun dips low, I feel a bit melancholic, but moping won’t help. I’ve sulked in the library long enough. Time to switch gears and think about what’s next.

Judging by lunch, fixing their relationships now seems impossible. It’s probably better to try a different approach. Himeno said at lunch, “If you want to mediate, you should at least get our forgiveness first, then choose someone.” So that’s probably the starting point.

“Oh, Riku-kun.”

As I exit the school building and pass the gym, Wakana, in gym shorts and a black sports tee, radiating youthful sparkle, calls out to me.

I consider pretending not to notice and escaping, but that’d give her an excuse to come after me, so I wait as she approaches.

“Hey there, Riku-kun!”

“What’s up?”

“Just saw you, so I called out!”

Wakana flashes a mischievous grin, giving off the vibe of a femme fatale who effortlessly makes people fall for her without realizing it. Yui mentioned Wakana’s approachable personality makes her popular, so she probably does stuff like this without thinking, but I bet a few people have genuinely fallen hard for her.

[T/N: femme fatale, an attractive and seductive woman, especially one who is likely to cause distress or disaster to a man who becomes involved with her.]

“Aren’t you checking out any clubs, Riku-kun?”

“Turn that around—why are you checking out clubs, Wakana?”

“Hm? You mean, like, how am I so chill after what happened at lunch? If that’s it, I’m just trying not to think about it. Getting too mad burns through my energy.”

“Th-That’s part of it, but also, you didn’t do clubs before, right?”

I was curious why a heroine who didn’t join any clubs in the game was suddenly interested, which is why I asked.

“I didn’t, but since we’ve gone back in time, I figured doing something different might be… kinda fun, you know?”

“Cool. I’m rooting for you.”

“Thanks! I’ll work hard to find a love nest where I can get all cozy with you, Riku-kun.”

“If you’re treating club visits like house hunting, maybe you should rethink it.”

“Then I’ll start building the nest instead.”

“No need to build anything, and it sounds like you already assumed there was a nest.”

“Yup. I was planning to turn us into a pair of cuckoos.”

“Let’s absolutely not do that.”

As Wakana lets out a whiny “Ehhh,” I wonder what to do with this girl tossing out morally questionable jokes. Just then, my smartphone rings. I pull it from my pocket and see an unfamiliar number. Suspicious, I answer.

“Hello? Riku!?”

Recognizing the excited voice, I say her name.

“Yui?”

“Yup, that’s me!”

“How’d you get my number?”

“Duh, I’m your girlfriend.”

It’s true she was my girlfriend in the game, so it’s not weird she’d have my number, but it’s still kinda creepy.

“Riku-kun?”

Wakana, sporting a dark smile, pokes my navel with her index finger.

“Who’re you talking to in the middle of our conversation?”

Her icy tone makes me stiffen with fear.

As if mocking me, her finger slides up my stomach, the faint sensation like a slimy creature crawling over me sending shivers down my spine. Her finger stops at my chest, pressing lightly as if toying with my skin without breaking it. The feeling of my life being played with makes cold sweat trickle down.

“Riku? Something wrong?”

Glancing at Wakana, who looks like a kidnapper forcing a hostage to confirm they’re alive, I try to sound calm despite my fear.

“N-Nothing’s wrong.”

“Good. If anything’s up, lean on me, okay? I’ll do anything for you.”

“Th-Thanks. So, why’d you call?”

“Right! So, Riku, wanna go on a date after school tomorrow?”

“Uh… a date? Why?”

“I’m supposed to get scouted tomorrow, so I thought we could hang out afterward.”

Her words jog my memory. There’s an event where Riku, out shopping in town after school, runs into Yui during a street snap and witnesses her getting scouted as a magazine model. That’s what she’s talking about.

“It’s just getting a business card, so how about a date while we’re out in town?”

As she suggests this, Wakana brings her glossy, well-shaped lips close to the phone.

“…Ahhn♡”

Her sultry voice, mixed with a sweet sigh, is clearly meant to mess with Yui.

“Riku, who’s with you?”

Her voice, dripping with rage, is scary, but I’m starting to get used to it. My heart might be numb, but my nerves are still working, judging by the stomachache.

“Stop it, Riku-kun. That’s… ah, too intense!”

“Riku, keep that idiot there. I’m coming to crush her right now.”

“I’ll hand her the phone, so you two sort it out…”

I pass the phone to the moaning Wakana, connecting her to a furious Yui. I step away to a random spot, sit in a huddle, and wait for their fight to end.

Yui invited me on a date, but if I go, there’s no telling what Wakana and Himeno might do. I feel bad brushing off her feelings, but I can’t go.

“Here’s your phone back.”

It seems their talk is over, and I take the phone from Wakana.

“Riku-kun, I’m joining you and Yui on your date tomorrow.”

Caught off guard, I let out a pathetic “Huh?”

“Why? How’d that happen?”

“I knew it was you Yui was inviting from your voice, so I pressed her, like, ‘Trying to sneak ahead?’ She shot back, ‘Come if you want. If you wanna watch Riku be all over me with your thumb in your mouth.’ So I was like, ‘Then I’m in~ That’s the gist.”

“I see…”

I can already see the sparks flying, and just imagining it makes my stomach hurt.

“Alright, Riku-kun, I gotta change, so I’m heading back. Looking forward to our date tomorrow!”

Wakana, casually reframing it as her date, waves and heads into the gym.

Yeah, got it! I’m sitting this date out, please! Also, it’s me, Wakana, and Yui—can we even call it a date? Even stretching it, isn’t it just hanging out?

Of course, I can’t say that, so I mutter weakly to myself.

“…Guess I should invite Himeno too. Leaving her out would be bad.”

***

The white light filtering through the curtains wakes me up.

I stretch lazily while still lying down, then slowly sit up.

Glancing at the alarm clock by my bed, it’s 6:30 AM. I woke up before my alarm, but morning feels too short.

Two more hours, and I’ll have to leave the dorm.

Sakuramiya Academy’s dorms are split into boys’ and girls’, with strict no-entry rules for the opposite sex. That makes the dorm a sanctuary where the three of them can’t threaten me, so leaving feels daunting. Especially since I’ve got a guaranteed chaotic date after school today.

I’d love to hole up here, but that’s not an option, so I get out of bed and start getting ready for school.

I brush my teeth, shower in the dorm’s bathroom, and head to the cafeteria.

Slipping on sandals, I step outside, hugging myself against the morning chill, and enter the cafeteria next to the dorm.

The hall, with long tables and four-seaters, feels like a hotel buffet restaurant. Breakfast is, as expected, a buffet, with colorful dishes lined up along the wall.

I grab a tray, pile on some plates, and start picking out breakfast.

This place really is nice.

If I lose this, I’d have nowhere to go, and I’m stuck here, but I do want to stay. As a scouted student, my tuition and dorm fees are free, and I even get an allowance from the chairman, letting me fully enjoy this setup.

After grabbing food, I start eating with gusto when someone calls out.

“Morning, Riku.”

Looking up, I see Yui.

Her silver hair glitters in the morning sunlight, her pale, translucent skin and clear blue eyes radiating a mystical beauty. But her outfit—a gyaru-style black camisole under a loose hoodie—shows off her delicate shoulders, perfect collarbone, and even a glimpse of cleavage. Her long, gorgeous legs peek out from shorts, adding a seductive, devilish charm.

I’m captivated by her looks, but the regret of letting my guard down overwhelms me.

Right, the cafeteria is co-ed.

“Can I eat breakfast with you?”

It’s scary, so no. Before I can say that, Yui sets her tray on the table.

Her plate shows signs of being eaten. She must’ve been eating, spotted me, and moved over mid-meal…

The weight of her affection makes my stomach churn, and I wonder if I can even finish what I took.

“Eating breakfast with you, Riku, makes me so happy~”

“Yeah, sure.”

As I stand, Yui calls out again.

“The dorm food’s so good. But I’m a little jealous.”

“Jealous? Of what?”

“That someone else is feeding you delicious food. I want to be the one giving you all your joy.”

“You’re overthinking it, aren’t you?”

“By the way, I’m jealous of oxygen too. I want to be the one who keeps you alive or takes you out.”

Yui lets out a cute, girlish sigh. I can’t tell if she’s joking, so I let out a dry laugh.

“Oh, this sausage is different from usual. It’s crispy and yummy. Try it, Riku… Here, say ‘ahh~’”

Yui says cutely, but I shake my head.

“What, you won’t? Oh, embarrassed? Yeah, it’s embarrassing in public, right?”

“Well, yeah, but it’s more another reason.”

“Another?”

“A sausage pinched with fingers feels unsanitary.”

The sausage Yui’s offering is held between her fingers. Her long, beautiful fingers are so alluring I can’t help imagining their touch. But still, it’s unhygienic.

“Are you saying I’m dirty♡?”

Yui’s angelic smile makes me tremble, and I shake my head vigorously.

“No way, just a joke!”

“Hehe, I know. Geez, Riku, you’re such a tease~”

I reluctantly take the offered sausage in my mouth. It’s frustrating, but as Yui leans forward, her cleavage peeks out, her hair sways with a sweet scent, and the mix of embarrassment makes me feel weird.

“Now it’s my turn to get one from you.”

There’s a sausage on my plate that Yui’s eyeing.

She’ll probably find some excuse to make me do it…

Reluctantly, I pick it up with a fork and hold it out to her.

“No, no. Fingers.”

“Uh, I’d rather not…”

“Hm? Cheating?”

“I’ll do it!”

Yui’s eyes darken, so I pull the sausage off the fork with my fingers. As I offer it, she gazes at me with pleading marine-blue eyes.

Drawn to her glossy pink lips against her pale skin, I slowly bring the sausage closer. Her mouth opens, revealing a slick, red tongue. Then she leans in, biting the sausage—and my finger. The faint sensation of her teeth sends a shiver through me, followed by her tongue sliding over my finger. The ticklish pleasure makes my whole body tremble, and I nearly let out a sound from the overwhelming sensation.

With a chupa sound, she pulls back, and I hurriedly retract my hand.

My heart pounds as I stare wide-eyed at Yui.

“I shouldn’t let it fall… but, oops, too much?”

Yui chews, swallows, and giggles.

“Haha, yeah… so embarrassing. When’ll we get used to this?”

Her flushed, shy face and reduced chatter create a sweet, restless air between us. Her lily-of-the-valley-like cuteness captivates me… until I snap back to reality.

That was close. A gal game heroine’s shy face is too powerful. I almost rewrote my view of her as a creepy girl who licked my finger and fell for her… Wait, if I fell for her, would that solve everything?

Right now, I can’t choose because I don’t love anyone. If I did, responding to their feelings wouldn’t be an issue.

Yeah, I decided to pick someone first. My job is to face their affection and try to fall in love.

“Riku, say something, it’s embarrassing… Oh, you’re embarrassed too, right? Yeah, when you’re hyper-aware, you start worrying about bedhead, or if you’re cute, or what they think of you, don’t you?”

“Huh?”

“What? ‘Huh’? I’m all flustered thinking about this, and you’re thinking about something else entirely?”

Yui’s words hit like a sharp wind mixed with hail, and I scramble to cover.

“N-No way. I was thinking the same as you.”

“Good. Knowing you feel the same makes me even more excited for our date today. I can’t wait for after school—it’s gonna feel like forever, I bet.”

Yui says this with genuine joy.

The morning flies by, and it’s after school.

I’m on a bus, gazing at the town through the window, heading to hang out. The bus rolls along a highway lined with chain stores, then enters the crowded downtown with packed buildings. It’s not exactly a metropolis, but it’s decently lively. The bus stops at the station, and I spot Himeno and Wakana in uniform under an old clock tower in the rotary. I walk toward them.

My steps aren’t heavy. That’s because I’ve decided to face their affection and try to fall in love, and I’ve come up with a plan for it.

I haven’t fallen for these incredibly charming girls because I focus too much on their flaws. So today, I’ll keep looking at their positive sides to build affection. Then, I’ll follow my heart to decide who I like best. That’s the plan.

Cool-headed analysis, perfect solution. As expected of a protagonist like me, I pat myself on the back.

“Chuki! (Riku, thanks for inviting me on a date. Let’s make today wonderful!)”

Right upon arrival, Himeno says this, and I give an awkward smile while looking away.

I told her Yui and Wakana are coming too, and Wakana’s literally right next to her, but she’s in full date mode.

Am I the only one who can’t see this as a proper date? No, if she’s treating it as a real date, I’ll lean into it and convince myself it’s one. If I believe it’s a pure date, then Yui, Wakana, and Himeno are drop-dead gorgeous. Normally, a date with them would have me head over heels. If I focus on their good sides today, falling for one of them by the end isn’t impossible.

“Alright, Riku-kun, looks like everyone’s here, so let’s go.”

“Yes, let’s.”

“Yui’s not here yet.”

I hold back the two trying to ditch even one rival.

Unlike us, who came straight from school, Yui needs to change into casual clothes for the street snap, so she’s running late. But she texted me while I was on the bus saying she’s on one now, so she shouldn’t be long.

“Should we decide what to do? Yui’s thing is at 6:30 PM, so we’ve got about two hours to kill.”

Wakana glances up at the clock showing 4:30 PM.

“True. Since the timing’s a bit awkward, how about we hang out near a spot that’s easy to slip away from while Yui’s getting scouted?”

“Sounds good!”

Sounds good, my foot! No, I can’t keep nitpicking their flaws. I’m here to fall in love today. Instead of focusing on the little things, I’ll only look at their good sides.

They could’ve tried ditching Yui right away or picked a far-off spot to make it hard for her to join, but they’re thoughtfully considering her schedule and suggesting we hang out nearby. There’s no doubt their hearts are kind, and seeing them as girls who can’t be ruthless makes them seem adorable.

This is it. This is the optimal approach for today. If I keep finding their good qualities, I’ll fall for them.

“That’d make the arcade near the station a good choice. Given the time and place, a game center might be perfect.”

I genuinely think Himeno’s suggestion is great. It sounds fun, and with so many ways to play, it’ll be easier to see everyone’s good points.

“I’m on board. I especially like how Himeno’s refined Ojou-sama vibe stands out in a place like that.”

“Wakana? Are you picking a fight?”

“No way~ By the way, Himeno, got anything specific you wanna do?”

“Let’s see. I want to try something new, so maybe a medal game like slots.”

“Great choice! I bet slamming the machine would suit you perfectly, Himeno!”

“Are you sure you’re not picking a fight?”

“Nooo, not at all! Riku-kun thinks it’s a good idea too, right?”

Honestly, a girl picking slots for a date feels a bit off, but today’s theme is focusing on the good stuff.

“Yeah, I really like how you don’t care about appearances.”

“What!? Really!? I’m so happy, Riku. Ehehe, I love you for praising me!”

Himeno’s face melts into a giddy smile, while Wakana frowns in contrast.

“Himeno, you cool with that? Riku-kun’s not just saying the same thing as me—he’s being even harsher.”

“As long as he’s praising me, I don’t care.”

“I think Himeno’s easygoing nature is really great.”

“Ehehe~ I’m super easy~”

“That sudden childlike vibe feels mysterious and cool.”

“I’m so happy, I love you! You praising everything makes you so cool, Riku!”

“Uh… these two are getting a bit wild, huh?”

“I think Wakana’s honesty is really great.”

“Riku, you’re the wild one here.”

The moment I praise Wakana, Himeno suddenly pulls the rug out from under me, so I decide to keep my mouth shut. But looking at them positively keeps their flaws out of sight, easing my stomach, and lets me see Himeno’s carefree charm and Wakana’s straightforward nature. If I keep this up, I might actually fall for them.

“Showing up to this tense vibe right away, huh?”

A bit later, Yui arrives, and I tilt my head, noticing something off about her outfit.

Her top is a sweatshirt, a refined charcoal color with a woven design that avoids looking childish or plain, so sophisticated it barely feels like a sweatshirt. Yet it retains that relaxed sweatshirt vibe, pairing perfectly with loose, beige straight-leg pants with wide thighs and hems. Her cute yellow sneakers add a pop of color, and the overall polished yet slightly casual look feels ideal for everyday wear.

“Hm? Riku, not a fan of this outfit?”

That’s not why I tilted my head. I’ve never seen her wear this in the game. She wore something else when she got scouted in this event.

“What a shame you came in casual clothes, Yui. You can go home and change if you want.”

“No, I think it’s stylish.”

“Hear that, you two? Stylish, he said stylish! Sorry, Riku, if they didn’t catch that, it’d be sad, so say it one more time.”

“Let’s just go. The station’s crowded, and we’ll be in the way.”

“Yui, remember this. I’ll never forgive you for making Riku ignore my request right in front of me.”

Don’t call it a “play,” and aren’t you mad about being provoked instead? Ugh, I’m nitpicking again. No, focus on the good stuff. I reset and speak.

“Anyway, let’s go.”

As I start walking, they bicker behind me over who gets to walk beside me. They’re making sure not to spread out four abreast, showing high moral awareness, I think positively as we head to the game center.

I sit in the driver’s seat, waiting for the signal to change at the circuit’s starting line. When it turns green, I slam the accelerator, nailing the start and speeding up—until a loud crash pierces the air from behind. Checking the rearview mirror, I see them slamming their cars into each other in a chaotic chase.

No one’s coming for me, so I cruise the circuit at 60 km/h for three laps, easily taking first place as the race ends.

Stepping out of the racing game machine, I ask the three who get out shortly after.

“What game were you playing just now?”

“““Car sumo.”””

“First time I’ve heard that term.”

Let’s just say they’re all very knowledgeable.

“What’s next?”

“I’d like to try a shooting game. It’s my first time, so I might drag you down, but is that okay?”

Oh, this leaves a genuinely good impression. When I ask what to do, her suggesting something right away is super helpful. I respect her courage to speak up first despite it being awkward.

Himeno’s refined Ojou-sama appearance contrasts beautifully with her thoughtfulness. That gap—she looks like this but has such kindness—is great.

But I know Himeno went through a lot to get here. In her introductory event, she was a haughty Ojou-sama who’d snap just for someone crossing her path. Seeing her now, having grown as a person after completing her route, feels real.

“A shooting game, ideally with real guns. It might be good practice for later.”

“Oh, nice. Should I borrow some? If I drop the Kisaragi name, the police would probably hand them over.”

“No need, I’m covered. As a Yukishiro daughter, I could get one if I wanted.”

“A kitchen knife would probably do just fine, no?”

Ignoring what “just fine” means, I suggest we get started.

At a slightly old shooting game machine with a big monitor, I pull a gun from the stand under the screen and turn around.

“Who’s going first?”

*To avoid sparking trouble over who plays with whom, I phrase it carefully, and Wakana makes a suggestion.

“How about Himeno?”

“Is that okay?”

“Yeah. In exchange, we each play different games, cool?”

“I’m fine with that. You all good?”

Maybe scarred from the car race, they all nod, saying “I don’t want interference,” so we settle on that.

“I’ll go pick something. Look forward to it, Riku-kun.”

“Alright, I’ll pick too.”

After Wakana and Yui head off to choose, Himeno and I put a hundred yen into the machine.

“This how it works?”

“Yup. Shoot at the screen.”

Himeno pulls the trigger, and the opening plays, starting the shooting game. It’s the type where enemies crash into you, draining life points, so you constantly fire at enemies closing in.

It’s my first time with Himeno, but we clear stages surprisingly smoothly. She shoots where I need her to without me saying a word, and I do the same. It’s like we’re in sync, probably because Himeno’s so attuned to people’s feelings.

“Riku, thank you!”

Every time I cover her, Himeno thanks me. Despite her Ojou-sama vibe suggesting she wouldn’t, her politeness leaves a great impression. Plus, her posture while holding the gun is so elegant I can’t stop staring. Normally, holding a game gun gracefully would look comical, but not with Himeno. Her dignified aura makes it feel natural.

“Here comes the boss.”

“Yeah, take it down, and we clear stage two, right?”

“Hey, Riku. If we beat it, will you praise me?”

“Sure, no problem.”

“Yay!”

Himeno’s shy, beaming smile and soft charm catch me off guard with another adorable gap, making my heart skip.

We take down the stage two boss without trouble, and I sense Himeno practically wagging an imaginary tail like a dog waiting for praise.

“Pretty good for your first time.”

“Ehehe~ I got praised~ Riku, I love you~”

Her tendency to melt into a puddle when praised or pampered is starting to feel endearing. Her happy face when indulged softens my heart’s edges.

“You having fun makes it fun for me too. Thanks.”

“Aww~ That’s, like, love on love!”

“Uh, I don’t really get that.”

“It’s love, love!”

Okay, this is a bit much, even for me.

The game resumes after a cutscene, but the now-melted Himeno turns utterly clumsy, her earlier skill gone, and our life points vanish, ending in a game over.

“Oh, it’s over.”

A bit later, Himeno returns to normal. I consider joking that she basically played slots like she wanted, but it’d probably fly over her head, so I don’t.

“Let’s do it again, Riku. It’s my first time, but it’s so fun.”

“You’re hooked, huh?”

“Yes. You know, as the refined daughter of the prestigious Yukishiro family, I haven’t had much exposure to entertainment. I know about things in theory, but I’ve barely experienced them, so it’s all so fresh and exciting.”

It’s a clichéd setup, but she’s a real person. Her sparkling eyes, brimming with anticipation as she speaks, have the pure excitement of a kid opening a picture book. Her genuine joy is palpable. She’d probably find anything fun and laugh no matter what we did.

“So, Riku, I’d be thrilled if you’d play all sorts of things with me. I know it’ll be fun no matter what.”

Himeno’s innocent smile is so dazzling it could capture a ghost on camera, its charm enough to isolate you from the world with a single glance.

I can only imagine her flashing that smile beside me no matter what we play or where we go, and my heartbeat races. Looking at her now, she’s nothing but a real girl with the overwhelming allure of a game heroine.

This is bad. I might actually fall for her.

As the protagonist who’s solved every problem in the game, my plan made this possible and is the desired outcome. But actually feeling like I’m falling for her throws me off.

“Riku-kun, I’ve decided.”

“Riku, I’m ready, let’s go!”

Wakana and Yui, back from picking their games, look like nothing but stunning real-world beauties brimming with charm. Sweating nervously, I head to the machines they chose.

By the time we leave the game center, the sun’s set, and the sky is a deep indigo. The bustling streets near the station are lit by streetlights and shop displays, dazzlingly bright. It’s just before 6:30 PM, and the crowd is thick, with the heroines drawing rude stares from men and women alike.

“That girl staring at Wakana with admiration is probably the ‘I’m super annoying~’ type with some deep issues, right? Otherwise, there’s no reason to idolize a basic high-caste school girl like Wakana.”

“That flashy college guy looking at Himeno’s got a face like, ‘I’ve lived shallowly, but meeting my soulmate has shown me true love.’ Probably thinks he’s a shoujo manga protagonist. Gotta be that type to go for Himeno.”

“That elementary school kid blushing at Yui? Choosing her over me means he’s dreaming of an otaku-friendly gyaru. Bet he’s got zero experience with women. Otherwise, picking Yui’s unthinkable.”

The heroines are throwing back even ruder stares than they’re getting, but it’s just petty bickering, not their true feelings. That girl doesn’t seem that troubled, the guy doesn’t think he’s a manga hero, and the kid’s obviously inexperienced because he’s a kid.

It hits me—they’ve never done anything bad to anyone outside the other heroines. As gal game heroines, they must have good hearts.

I’m liking them more and more. As people, I already like them.

It’s great I’m starting to like them, but no one’s standing out yet. Playing with Wakana and Yui at the game center was just as charming as with Himeno, but—arrogant as it sounds—I can’t rank them.

Still, I’ve cleared the first stage and reached the starting line. Now, I just need a trigger to fall for one of them. The plan’s on track.

“Isn’t it about time?”

As we enter the street where the street snap’s happening, Wakana checks her phone and says this.

“Yes. You might miss your chance if you don’t go.”

“I get you want me gone ASAP, but since you’re right, I’m going.”

Annoyed but compliant, Yui walks to the spot in front of a chic select shop where she’s supposed to be scouted.

“Maybe they’ll pass her by mistake.”

“Nah, that’d mean she’s back sooner, which is meh.”

“True.”

I catch snippets of their conversation.

The chance of being passed over, huh? With Yui’s looks and outfit, that’s unlikely, but will the event itself happen? Her outfit’s different from the game, and Wakana, Yui, Himeno, and I are all acting differently. A butterfly effect could prevent the event.

Watching Yui’s back carefully for that reason, a woman steps out of the select shop. White suit, flashy pink hair—an unmistakable entertainment industry look. I instantly recognize her as the scout from the game.

“Riku-kun, I’ve secured three escape routes. Ready to move?”

“Hurry up, Riku.”

“Don’t try to ditch Yui…”

Ignoring their grumbling, I watch Yui and the scout. After a brief chat, they start the photoshoot, and afterward, Yui gets a business card.

The event—street snap and model scouting—ends. Seeing it play out exactly as in the game, I realize the game’s events do happen as planned.

“Ugh, but fine—Himeno, Wakana!”

Yui waves big at us. The three of us exchange looks, then decide to head over to her and the scout.

“You two aren’t in casual clothes!? If you’re okay with it, I’d love to snap you and scout you!”

The moment we approach, the scout asks with enough enthusiasm to grab our hands. It’s clear she’s not talking to me, so I glance at Wakana and Himeno, who look a bit overwhelmed.

“Haha, actually, we don’t have any. And while photos are one thing, scouting’s a bit much.”

“I’m sorry as well.”

The scout reacts dramatically, exclaiming, “What!?”

“You’re both gorgeous, I have to shoot you… Oh, how about we provide clothes from our shop? In exchange, could you at least let me take your photos!?”

Seeing everyone in casual clothes could be great. To be blunt, while Himeno, Yui, and Wakana have stellar personalities, their looks are what truly stand out. If their casual style suits my taste, their already overwhelming charm could multiply, absolutely captivating me. The word “finale” for my plan even pops into my head.

“I bet everyone’s casual style would be super cute. I’d love to see it.”

Though I feel a pang saying it, all three perk up instantly.

“Chukiii (Ugh, I’m so nervous wanting Riku to call me cute… I wanna be called cute!)”

“If you say so, Riku, I’ll show you anytime! I’ll start coming to school in casual clothes tomorrow!”

“Does zero fabric count as casual!?”

I’m not sure if the scout doesn’t understand their words or is just hyper-focused on photos, but she leans forward, practically spitting with excitement.

“You’ll wear them!? Thank you!! Now, what’d suit you… Ohhh!! Why not have that boy pick your clothes!? Outfits chosen by a close guy bring out your inner charm perfectly!! And Yui-chan, we’ll reshoot you too!!”

“Uh, if possible, could I pass on picking?”

If I choose, I might impose my preferences, which could hold me back from fully appreciating their charm. That’s my concern, but the scout gives me a skeptical look.

“What~? It’s way better if a guy picks… Oh, wait. Is it because you’ve got no fashion sense? Yeah, you kinda give that vibe, so I’ll…”

A switch flips in my brain with a click. My vision narrows, consumed by the need to prove her wrong.

“I’ll do it.”

“Suddenly all fired up, huh?”

“It’s not like I can’t pick because I’ve got no sense.”

“Haha, is that so? Alright, let’s see your taste!”

“Yup. Watch and learn.”

I march into the shop first, hunting for clothes that’d suit the three of them. In just a few minutes, I finish picking and hand each their outfit, ushering them into the changing rooms.

“That was quick, kid. Had something in mind already?”

“Nope. Just decided now.”

“Hmm, that’s a bit worrisome.”

“It’ll absolutely be fine, so don’t worry.”

I state confidently and wait for them to finish changing. The scout looks anxious the whole time, but her eyes light up when Wakana steps out.

“W-Whoa, what!?”

Wakana’s wearing a black jacket and pants set, unisex but with a long, loose jacket that’d feel cute on a guy. On Wakana, it’s got a menswear-inspired coolness that amplifies her vibe. The pants have a similarly relaxed, rounded silhouette but with elegance, paired with a blue-and-gray shirt and glossy black sandals, giving the whole look a refined edge.

It’s the kind of outfit anyone would peg as fashion-forward, and combined with Wakana’s overwhelming youthful charisma, it makes you want to bow in awe. If she approached you with her usual friendliness in this, your heart would give out, and your lifespan would shrink.

“So cool…”

“That much? Could you tell me what parts, specifically?”

Wakana’s smile makes the scout clutch her chest. Probably lost two days of her life there.

“Uh, can I come out?”

The flustered scout stammers, “G-Go ahead!” and Himeno emerges.

“S-So cute!”

Himeno’s in a street-style outfit: black cap, oversized white striped shirt, and chinos. But since this shop only stocks classy items, it’s not hardcore streetwear. The shirt fits just right, not too wide, and the sharply tapered chinos look almost like slacks, so she’d fit perfectly at a chic café.

Still, the street vibe is there, blending Himeno’s dignified coolness with the adorable charm maxed out by girls’ street fashion. Her glossy long black hair spilling from the cap over the shirt is so mesmerizing it’s like a sweet fragrance wafts over, making you want to tear your heart out from how perfect it is.

“I don’t usually wear clothes like this. How is it? Does it suit me?”

“Y-Yes!”

As the scout answers, a sharp shing rings out, and the curtain next to her opens. In contrast to the piercing sound, a soft, ethereal, pure beauty steps out.

“A f-fairy!?”

A dark gray, soft-fabric jumper skirt, a fluffy gray shirt, and cute, feminine black leather shoes. It’s not about individual pieces but the overall vibe—like reading in a forest café under dappled sunlight.

Yui’s usual gyaru flair is her unique weapon, but this outfit proves her silver-haired, fairy-like beauty is just as unbeatable without it. The pure, overflowing cuteness soothes your heart and warms you up.

Before Yui can say anything, the scout grabs her hand.

“Thank you!! You’re all so cute it brings tears to my eyes. Sorry for doubting you!!”

“Heh, told ya. They’re all so cute it’s impossible to pick one, right…?”

Smirking triumphantly, my competitive streak fades, cool-headedness returns, and regret hits.

They’re all so insanely charming in their casual clothes that picking one is impossible, but duh. I chose outfits to match my tastes, so of course it’d end up like this.

“Alright, let’s get to the photoshoot!”

The scout drags the three to the photo spot, leaving me standing dumbfounded alone in the shop.

Common Route 4

Unable to bear the stifling mood, I step out from my claustrophobic room onto the balcony. Breathing in the chilly night air, I lean my elbows on the railing and look up at the sky. The flow of dark, smoky clouds is fast, intermittently hiding the white moonlight, and I sink into sentimentality, thinking, “Today was that kind of day, huh.”

In the end, the date fizzled out without anything happening. No results gained.

If I hadn’t gotten heated when picking their clothes, they would’ve chosen their own. That would’ve diverged from my preferences, creating differences in how I felt, and maybe I’d have been swept away by whoever’s casual style was closest to my taste.

I don’t know if that’s the “right” way to fall in love—probably closer to wrong—but it would’ve gotten me closer to the goal of falling for someone, that’s for sure.

My competitive streak flaring up has always been a complex since my player days, but now it’s outright loathsome, and I’m fed up. Fixing their friendships with volleyball, falling for someone on the date—both failed because my competitive nature took over. That’s the player in me screwing things up. If I were the pure game protagonist Riku, untainted by the player’s personality, I’d have solved it all flawlessly.

It makes me feel like I’m not the game protagonist Minato Riku after all.

Himeno, Wakana, and Yui are in love with the Minato Riku without the player’s personality mixed in. No matter how much they expect it, the me with the player’s personality can never become the Riku they love.

Then… I got it.

If they realize I can’t be Minato Riku, they’ll cool off, and things will settle down.

I’m hit with the urge to explain right now that I’m not Minato Riku, but I already tried that on the rooftop when the three were together. No matter how eloquently I explain, they won’t just nod and say, “Oh, okay.” So I gave up.

In the end, they’ll have to notice the disconnect through my actions and feel I’m someone else. And I have no choice but to wait for that.

I lift my head from staring down. In the night sky, stars twinkle forlornly through gaps in the clouds.

“The special assignments start soon, huh.”

I’ll stop trying to do things proactively and just live normally. Gotta keep my competitive streak in check so I don’t do anything weird.
