Chapter 1: A Challenge from the One I Seek
♯
“Ah, nn…”
In the early afternoon, a sweet voice, as if suppressing something, echoed through the Western-style mansion.
“No, Master. If you move any more vigorously… nn, nnh!”
The sighs and alluring cries irresistibly stirred my desires. The familiar maid outfit worn by her—Himeji—produced faint rustling sounds every time she twisted her body, further unsettling my heart.
“You say not to move, but… just a bit deeper, is that no good? I think if I go slowly, it’ll be fine.”
“D-deeper…”
Himeji, panting heavily, repeated my words as if mulling them over. Then, as if steeling herself, she gave a slight nod, her silver hair swaying gracefully.
“…Understood. If it is your wish, Master, I will fully accept it.”
“Thank you.”
I responded with straightforward gratitude to Himeji’s obedient tone, shifting my position slightly. Instantly, her body pressed against me through her clothes, and as I felt her warmth, my heart raced while I resumed gentle, careful movements, focusing intently on every sensation.
…And then,
“Ah, nn, wait, please, Master—…nnaah!”
In that moment, a particularly loud cry struck my ears. Her delicate frame jolted sharply. Her clear blue eyes squeezed shut for a fleeting second, then slowly opened as the intense aftershocks faded. Completely relaxed, she remained silent for a while, regulating her ragged breathing, until her cherry-pink lips parted softly—
“It’s game over.”
—she said in a slightly sulky tone, letting go of the controller she held.
“Phew…”
On the unnecessarily luxurious sofa in the excessively spacious living room, Himeji, seated beside me, let out a faint sigh, her glossy silver hair swaying.
“I told you, didn’t I, Master? You shouldn’t move so vigorously there. That spot surely requires retreating temporarily and approaching from another route.”
“Maybe… ugh, I thought I could manage if I was careful.”
I scratched my cheek, showing a hint of reflection, as Himeji calmly pressed her point.
Hydrazia—the game Himeji and I were fervently playing was a newly released title from just last week. It’s a so-called “death game,” where players face unreasonably strong enemies and dungeons filled with stage gimmicks, navigated by a human character. Its difficulty balance is exquisite, earning high praise both domestically and internationally.
However, games like this are notorious for being time sinks. A single attempt might take only a few minutes, but before you know it, hours have passed, and the date has changed.
Still, my decision to purchase this game was tied to the current “season.”
Today is May 17th, a Tuesday following the week of the massive island-wide event, the May Inter-District Tournament. Most students are attending school as usual, but due to the event being held during what’s called the “Event Week” vacation period on Academy Island, participants are granted compensatory holidays.
Naturally, this is a standard measure, but a full week’s break is significant. Combined with the exhaustion from the large-scale event, there’s little to do but laze around, which is why I’m indulging in this game with Himeji.
…Though I didn’t expect Himeji to get this hooked on it.
Thinking this, I glanced at the maid-clad girl beside me, staring intently at the screen with a serious “mmm” expression. She seemed to be analyzing the replay footage that played after the game over, but soon turned to me, her voice cool and clear.
“Here, I think. Getting past this cliff feels crucial. If you climb leisurely, you’ll get attacked by enemies from behind, but using the jump platform causes the cliff to collapse from the impact of landing. Riding the giant eagle’s back leads to a bad end at its nest. All options seem incorrect for now.”
“Yeah. But if that’s the case, what else can we try… wait, hold on. When you’re thrown into the eagle’s nest, there’s a brief moment before the game over screen appears, right?”
“A moment? …! You’re right, there is. It’s only about a second, but it’s clearly intentional. Does that mean we can act during that time?”
“Yeah, probably. Look, it’s hidden by the eagle’s body, but there’s a hole-like thing in the back of the nest, isn’t there? That likely leads to another path. Or maybe you hide in that hole and wait for the eagle to leave.”
“I see… fufu, as expected of your keen observation, Master.”
Himeji, turning her upper body toward me as if impressed, shifted her gaze from the game screen. Naturally, the neckline of her maid outfit came closer to my eyes, and a sweet, feminine scent mercilessly tickled my nose.
“……”
I noticed something—while playing the game, Himeji, focused on the controls, was terribly unguarded. Despite the sofa’s size, she had somehow ended up pressed against me. Her subtle movements in response to the character’s actions caused her arms and thighs to frequently brush against me, and the occasional damage noises she made were suspiciously sultry… In short, she was just too adorable in every way.
“…? Master, is something wrong?”
Noticing my sudden lack of response, Himeji tilted her head curiously. Then, as if struck by a thought, she leaned even closer, half-leaning over me to peer into my eyes. Her translucent blue eyes were so captivating that I could easily lose myself in them if I wasn’t careful.
“…! Break! Let’s take a break! …Okay!?”
I closed my eyes tightly and proposed this, flustered.
—Shirayuki Himeji is an excellent cook.
This is, in a sense, only natural. Even though it’s a lie, as the girl chosen to serve me, a supposed “Seven-Star,” it was obvious from the start that she’d excel not only in cheating or《Duel》, but in all household tasks. However, Himeji’s skill is on another level.
“So good…”
“I’m honored by your praise, Master.”
Placing two teacups on the low table in front of the sofa with a soft clink, she said this, her lips curling slightly. Today’s tea snack was bite-sized madeleines. Their artfully appetizing golden-brown color and fragrant buttery aroma spread a gentle sweetness the moment they touched my tongue, filling me with euphoria. They paired perfectly with the mildly sweet black tea.
“Fufu… Well then, I’ll partake as well.”
Whispering softly, Himeji sat beside me. When we first met, she wouldn’t even sit at the same table, let alone next to me, but now we share a single sofa. The thought that she trusts me this much tickles and delights me, making my heart race endlessly.
And so, I thoroughly enjoyed this embodiment of happiness.
Just as I reached for the controller to resume the game, my terminal vibrated briefly in my pocket. Apologizing lightly to Himeji, who was already on standby, I took it out to check the notification.
“…A《Duel》request?”
Seeing the text displayed in the center of the screen, I couldn’t help but furrow my brow slightly.
A《Duel》request—to explain this, I need to touch on Academy Island’s unique evaluation system. Every high school student attending the island’s academies possesses an important item called a “Star,” which indicates their “Rank.” It’s essentially a visible caste system. Higher ranks grant greater privileges.
The most traditional and effective way to acquire Stars is through《Duel》. You can only challenge someone of a higher rank, staking your Stars and pride in a “Star-taking” game. Losing costs you one Star, while winning can lead to promotion depending on conditions. Additionally, since Academy Island has a “School Ranking” system determining the hierarchy among academies, taking Stars from students of other wards directly impacts your academy’s evaluation.
Because of this, as a current Seven-Star, I’m an ideal “target” for students from other wards. Defeating me could make them the next hero and significantly boost their school’s ranking. So, being challenged to a《Duel》isn’t particularly surprising—
“That’s odd… I should have notifications turned off.”
I tilted my head slightly as I said this. Due to the “lie” making my name resound across Academy Island, receiving notifications from strangers would be overwhelmingly bothersome. Thus, I’ve turned off nearly all notifications except for those from close allies or exceptional requests—yet this time, my terminal vibrated.
“…What do you think, Himeji?”
“Well… if this request isn’t from someone like Rina or Akizuki-sama, one possibility is that the challenger holds higher authority than you. However, that’s extremely unlikely, so perhaps the《Duel》format itself is somewhat unusual?”
“Unusual?”
“Yes. While your terminal is adjusted to block unnecessary notifications, missing important ones would defeat the purpose. Thus, certain notifications are set to display as is—specifically, requests from Six-Star players or when the《Duel》format deviates from the norm. …Um, may I take a look?”
“? Sure.”
Following Himeji’s guidance as she leaned in to peer at my terminal, I opened the details of the requested《Duel》. Displayed was the concise《Duel》name《DearScript》and an unfamiliar category labeled《Type: Gamebook》.
“Gamebook…?”
Himeji, letting her silver hair flow, muttered in a puzzled tone.
“This is my first time seeing this《Duel》format. Let’s see… from the overview, it’s not the usual ‘Player vs. Player’ structure but rather a ‘Game Master vs. Player’ setup, where one side sets the scenario and the other clears it. However, since the Game Master and Player aren’t on equal footing, no Star transfers occur regardless of the outcome.”
“No Star transfers…? That’s a bit intriguing. Other wards’ students challenge me to《Duel》obviously to take Stars from a Seven-Star like me. So what’s the point of a special《Duel》that doesn’t involve Stars?”
“Hmm… well, not betting Stars means there’s ‘a chance to defeat you with no risk,’ so it’s not a bad tactic for someone seeking fame. Alternatively, perhaps someone connected to Kurahashi Mikado—though he’s gone—might be trying to gather data or something.”
I fell silent at Himeji’s statement, which wasn’t entirely far-fetched.
Kurahashi Mikado was the former principal of Seijo Academy in the Twelfth Ward and a full-fledged member of the board. Since last month’s《Ward Selection Tournament》, he relentlessly targeted my Stars, but his interference during the May Inter-District Tournament led to his banishment from the island. However, during that same event, Kirigaya Touya, a Six-Star from Shinra High School in the Seventh Ward, revealed he was Kurahashi’s ally (though he didn’t phrase it that way). In other words, Kurahashi was part of an organization, not acting alone. To those who find my Seven-Star status an unbearable obstacle, only a fraction of their group has been dismantled.
Indeed, it wouldn’t be surprising if they used any means necessary.
“…Well, might as well check the details.”
Realizing pondering wouldn’t get me anywhere, I manipulated the terminal to project the《DearScript》screen. Immediately, the following text appeared before me.
【—《Special Duel》: DearScript】
【《DearScript》is a《Duel》modeled after a gamebook.】
【Participants are each given an app called《DearScript》, a digital book. Each page contains a “current situation (text)” and an “order to proceed to the next page,” which, when cleared, automatically turns the page.】
【Victory Condition: Reach the final page without dropping out. Players who achieve this are granted the reward of a meeting with the《DearScript》administrator (Game Master).】
【Defeat Condition: Falling into a situation where one or more orders are “absolutely impossible to clear.” Players meeting this condition are automatically eliminated from《DearScript》.】
【The order for Page 0 is listed below. Executing it signifies your participation in《DearScript》.】
““……?””
Himeji and I furrowed our brows as we scanned the dense text. The rules were, frankly, confusing. The situation texts and orders were fine, but the intent was unclear. According to these rules, even if I lose, there’s no downside. Sure, I’d miss out on the victory reward, but the reward—a meeting with the administrator—doesn’t even sound that compelling.
“Hmm…”
Himeji, staring silently at the screen, eventually shook her head slightly.
“It feels a bit off, but… I think it’s fine to ignore, Master. This《Duel》is no-risk, no-return for both sides—likely just a publicity stunt.”
“Yeah, probably. No obligation to accept it, so I’ll just let it sit—wait, huh?”
Himeji tilted her head slightly at my sudden reaction. “No…” I muttered vaguely, enlarging the projected screen.
“I didn’t notice until now, but… there’s another message attached to the《Duel》details. Look, here.”
“Indeed, there is. …What will you do? It could be malicious slander using the《Duel》request as a direct message substitute.”
“N-no way, it wouldn’t be that bad… right?”
Slightly unnerved by Himeji’s half-joking, half-serious (probably concerned) remark, I opened the message decisively. It was a plain text file, likely a supplement to《DearScript》—and that assumption wasn’t wrong. However…
““Eh…?””
The moment we read the message, Himeji and I let out stunned gasps almost simultaneously. It felt like being sucker-punched from an unexpected angle. To calm my racing thoughts, I brought my right hand to my mouth, consciously breathing as I looked at the screen again.
“Yo, it’s been a few years, huh, Hiroto?”
“My challenge—did you read the rules of《DearScript》properly? It’s not the usual cutthroat《Duel》you’re used to, but it’s pretty tough to clear. Get careless, and you might get burned.”
“If you manage to reach the final page—as a reward, I’ll let you meet me.”
“Because you’ve been searching for me all this time, right? You came to Academy Island to see me, didn’t you? …Yeah, that makes me so happy. I feel blessed.”
“But, if the person you went out of your way to find was easily discovered, that’d be boring, wouldn’t it? You might even be disappointed. Maybe I’d become irrelevant to you in no time.”
“I don’t want that… so I want you to work hard to find me. To discover me. Clear《DearScript》and come meet me.”
“So—let’s make it a promise, okay?”
…The message ended there.
It wasn’t an audio file, so I couldn’t discern the tone or voice. Being digital text, there was no handwriting to analyze.
Yet, the content unmistakably pointed to one person.
“The person you’re searching for, Master…?”
Himeji said this in a voice mixed with confusion and unease.
Yes, exactly—about two months ago, I was scouted by Eimei’s principal and moved to Academy Island. My immediate agreement to the sudden transfer had a reason: to find my “childhood friend,” who supposedly came here years ago. Incidentally, the reason I stayed on the island despite defeating an “ojousama” in an accident on my first day—and telling a massive lie—was the same. I crossed the sea to this island to see her again.
However, my memories of her are nearly a decade old. I can recall fragmented episodes, but her appearance or name? Not a chance. That’s why finding her seemed nearly impossible, with my only hope being to become a true Seven-Star, granting access to all of Academy Island’s information—
“…And she’s challenging me to a《Duel》?”
Feeling my heartbeat quicken uncontrollably, I managed to mutter this in a trembling voice. Yes, the text could only be interpreted that way. She knows I’m on Academy Island, knows my purpose, and is contacting me. If I want to meet her, I need to clear this《Duel》.
There’s no proof the《DearScript》administrator is the girl I’m searching for. But the number of people who know I came to this island to find someone is extremely limited, and there’s no merit in lying to give me false hope.
“If this is real… it’s a chance, right?”
Unconsciously, my grip tightened on the terminal.
“……”
Watching my reaction closely, Himeji, with her usual expressionless face, seemed deep in thought. She opened her mouth hesitantly, as if to say something, then shook her head silently before looking up again and saying quietly,
“Indeed. The order on Page 0 is also somewhat intriguing, so ignoring it doesn’t seem an option. Shall we visit that vixen first to rule out the slim chance this is an elaborate prank, Master?”
She said this, her silver hair swaying lightly.
♯
The next day.
Waiting for Himeji and me in the principal’s office of Eimei Academy in the Fourth Ward of Academy Island was not the young head of the academy, Ichinose Natsume, but a much younger girl. With glossy black hair, heterochromatic eyes of jet-black and crimson, and a flawless gothic lolita dress despite being indoors, she was a quintessential chuunibyou middle schooler. Her name: Shiina Tsumugi.
“Wah, it’s Big Brother!”
Shiina, who had been munching on something like fruit granola with a small spoon, lit up upon noticing my arrival. She jumped up from the sofa and scampered toward me, hugging my waist without slowing down and gazing up with sparkling eyes.
“It’s been a week, Big Brother! Did you come to see me!?”
“Huh? Well… not exactly, but I guess it’s not entirely wrong. I was worried you might be down.”
Feeling a bit embarrassed by Shiina’s 100% trusting and affectionate gaze, I answered without letting it show. It was true I’d been concerned. As the mysterious《Chameleon》who disrupted the May Inter-District Tournament, she was detained by the island’s disciplinary police immediately after the event.
It was soon revealed that “Kurahashi had deceived the pure and innocent Shiina,” leading to her release, but as the unprecedented super-troublemaker who created a fake account, her original academy hesitated to take her back. Sending her to her parents on the mainland was also off the table since Shiina, still attached to《Duel》, resisted. As compromises were being explored, Eimei’s principal stepped up to take her in.
Apparently, since Shiina’s most attached to me, no one but Eimei could handle her properly… or so the principal strong-armed the situation with that logic.
That principal is as shrewd—or sly—as ever.
Anyway, that’s how Shiina came under Eimei’s care. However, being the “reclusive elite” Shiina Tsumugi, she unsurprisingly didn’t warm to the principal. With zero life skills, letting her live alone would be a disaster. So, I’d heard she was temporarily staying in a small room attached to the principal’s office.
Casually glancing at the door to said room, I gently steered the conversation back.
“Being right next to the principal’s office should be fine environment-wise, but… you had interrogations over the weekend, right? You okay?”
“Yup, totally fine! Talking to strangers was scary—not that I was scared, but I didn’t want to intimidate them with my aura, so I answered with my back turned the whole time!”
“I see, you did great. …By the way, you’re staying here for a while, right?”
“Yup! Um, my ‘status’ or whatever hasn’t been fully decided yet, so I can’t move until it is. So, Big Brother, you can come play lots! Let’s do another《Astral》-like《Duel》!”
“Visiting’s fine, but something like《Astral》is a bit too intense. You’re shy with strangers, yet you want to drag how many people into it?”
“Mmm, true, but~… Big Brother, you do《Duel》every day, don’t you?”
“No way. If I did《Duel》like that daily, I’d collapse from stress someday.”
“Really? Oh, okay… then, what about today? What’s today’s talk about?”
“Huh? …Well, it’s about a《Duel》.”
“I knew it! Ehehe, my mystic eyes can’t be fooled, Big Brother. I wanna join, I wanna join~!”
Shiina rubbed her head against my chest, whining childishly. She clung to me like that for a while but soon let out a “kwa…” yawn. Her eyes melted drowsily, and still hugging me, she began to breathe softly, fast asleep. It was far too quick to be faking.
“She was like this during《Astral》too… how does she fall asleep so fast?”
“—Kukku, isn’t it obvious? That girl hasn’t slept a wink since yesterday.”
!?
Startled by the voice suddenly thrown from behind, I whipped around, my heart pounding. There stood the principal, wearing a daring smile—though it was slightly different from her usual ferocious one.
“Hmph. She barely shows herself when I’m around, yet she’s so attached to you, Shinohara. I’m almost jealous, which isn’t like me.”
“…Mmh, nyaa… nyafu.”
“Honestly, she’s hardly a middle schooler with that childishness…”
Muttering in exasperation, the principal reached out with a fidgety gesture, stroking Shiina’s silky hair for a while. After savoring it, she let out a satisfied breath and strode past Himeji and me into the principal’s office. Turning to face us, she sat on the opposite sofa, boldly crossing her legs and saying,
“—Now, you two. What’s the purpose of your visit today?”
After carrying the instantly asleep Shiina to the adjacent room, Himeji and I sat across the table from the principal.
Ichinose Natsume—she’s the current principal of Eimei Academy and the overseer of the Fourth Ward. A striking woman in a tailored office suit with black hair, she has a ferocious and sadistic personality. Aiming to dominate Academy Island, she and I, a fake Seven-Star, have a mutually beneficial relationship.
When I briefly explained the《DearScript》matter and directly asked if it was a prank, she responded with a teasing glance and these words:
“Kukku… honestly, you two are such fools. A prank? Me, on you, Shinohara? Come on, keep the jokes in check. I’m not that idle. Why, you ask? Because I’ve been stuck on Hydrazia’s ninth stage for four hours.”
“That’s plenty idle.”
I muttered in disbelief. As always, I wonder when this principal actually works.
“Fine, whatever… so, it’s not your way of passing time, then?”
“Let me ask you, why did you think it was me?”
“Well, that’s—”
“…Because you’re the only likely candidate, Lady Vixen.”
Cutting off my response, Himeji Shirayuki spoke up, her voice tinged with irritation. Standing beside the sofa, she fixed her blue eyes on the principal, hands neatly clasped.
“To my knowledge, very few people know why Master came to this island. And those who do, aside from you, Lady Vixen, aren’t the type to pull such pranks.”
“Oh? You make it sound like I would.”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying. Why not place a hand on your chest and think it over?”
“Hmm… well, mine aren’t as impressive as yours, but they’re decent. Good sensitivity too. Want to feel?”
“Tch… that’s not what I meant!”
Himeji’s cheeks flushed slightly as she retorted in a small voice to the principal, who had playfully touched her chest through her suit. The principal, chuckling amusedly, continued.
“Kukku… sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to tease. But Shirayuki, this time, I swear I’m not lying. Everything you just said is news to me.”
“Is that… really true?”
“I swear to God it’s true. …What, would a prank have been more reassuring?”
“! No such thing…”
Himeji, her voice rising in agitation, took a step forward but stopped abruptly, clamping her mouth shut. Then, in a faint voice, she said, “…My apologies,” and returned to her original spot, head slightly bowed.
“Master, um…”
“Huh? Oh, right.”
Snapped back to reality by Himeji’s blue-eyed gaze, I turned to the principal again. Adjusting my posture with a deliberate cough, I said,
“Ahem. …Anyway, we’ve established that this special《Duel》isn’t your prank. But that makes something else a bit strange.”
Pausing, I pulled the terminal from my pocket. Glancing down as I navigated, I projected the《DearScript》gamebook screen. I’d already explained the overall rules and《Duel》format to the principal, but there was one additional detail: the text for Page 0’s order.
【Order: Engage in a “Unique Star Battle” with Saionji Sarasa, the Six-Star of Ouka.】
【Supplementary Explanation: Three romance consultation quests will be presented within《DearScript》. You and Saionji Sarasa will tackle these, aiming to fulfill the “victory conditions” set for each quest. The player who first wins two quests will be declared the overall victor of the Unique Star Battle, earning the right to claim the “Purple Star” lost by Shiina Tsumugi in《Astral》.】
【Agreeing to this order will initiate your《DearScript》.】
—Unique Star Battle.
The term might seem outlandish at first glance, but the context makes its intent clear. It’s about who will claim Shiina’s Unique Star. Despite her chaos in《Astral》through various cheats and talents, her “not guilty” verdict means her Unique Star remains valid—not confiscated or voided.
The talk is about “contesting” it, but first, I should explain the other name mentioned in the order. Saionji Sarasa, Ouka’s Six-Star and undefeated《Empress》. She’s the daughter of Saionji Masamune, Academy Island’s supreme authority—a staggering lie. Due to our lies intertwining, we’re outwardly fierce rivals but secretly forced to cooperate in a strange accomplice relationship.
During the latter half of《Astral》, Saionji and I faced Shiina in a《Duel》called《Board Intersection》. It was heavily tied to an off-board battle with Kurahashi Mikado and ended in Shiina’s defeat, costing her Unique Star. However, the “winner” hadn’t been determined. Shiina dropped out early, but neither Saionji nor I fulfilled the《Duel》’s victory conditions. Thus, Shiina’s “Purple Star” remains on hold.
Normally, Eimei and Ouka would negotiate to settle it, but the item in question is a Unique Star, one of only a dozen or so confirmed to exist on the island. For me, it’s a step toward true Seven-Star status; for Saionji, it’s a chance to reclaim her status as a Unique Star holder. Neither of us can easily concede, and negotiations between the principals are reportedly stalled.
“…So.”
After mentally reviewing the situation, I looked up calmly.
“It’s natural for Eimei and Ouka to clash over who gets Shiina’s Unique Star, but it’s odd that an outsider knows about it. Plus, saying【Engage in a Unique Star Battle】—that’s not something I can decide alone. So, I thought maybe you were involved.”
I spoke, hand near my mouth, my words laced with doubt and confusion. Even if I wanted to join《DearScript》, clearing the first order requires agreement from Eimei, Ouka, and Saionji. It’s a critical issue concerning a Unique Star’s ownership, not something easily resolved.
“…Heh, how nostalgic.”
The principal, half-listening while peering at the screen, muttered this to no one in particular. Before I could react, she crossed her arms over her ample chest, entering a thoughtful pose.
Then, she said,
“《DearScript》—a special《Duel》without Star bets, huh? Indeed, that’s quite convenient.”
“Convenient?”
“Yes. …Listen. Deciding whether you or the《Empress》gets Shiina Tsumugi’s Unique Star is best settled through a《Duel》. That’s how this island operates. But Shinohara, as you know, Eimei can’t propose that. Pitting you, where a single loss means social death, against the《Empress》is literal suicide. The risk of defeat is far too great.”
“But, Lady Vixen, even if Eimei hesitates, wouldn’t Ouka push for a《Duel》?”
“No, not even that. For Ouka, having their《Empress》, who just fell from Seven-Star, drop further would be a massive blow to their image strategy. Sure, winning could restore her rank, but Ouka wouldn’t see you, a triple-color Seven-Star, as someone to challenge lightly.”
“I see…”
Himeji nodded in understanding beside me. In reality, Saionji knows my lie and doesn’t see me as “superior” in the slightest, but regardless, she must avoid a《Duel》with me. Our tangled lies mean either of us losing would ruin us both. A《Duel》where winning or losing is disastrous isn’t an option.
—But,
“That’s why this proposal is convenient. A regular《Duel》is indeed suicidal, but with《DearScript》, losing doesn’t cost Stars. Fairness, safety, and entertainment for spectators—it’s perfect in every way.”
“…Yeah, that’s true.”
I muttered, convinced. If no Stars are lost in defeat, the “loss = death” equation vanishes, making a direct confrontation with Saionji far more feasible. Overall,《DearScript》is convenient for everyone.
Then, saying, “Hold on a moment,” the principal stood from the sofa. Her heels clicked as she returned to the desk in the back, waking her PC from sleep mode and typing rapidly.
“I’ll share this with Ouka’s principal for now. It’s not a bad deal for them, so they’ll likely agree—huh?”
“…? What’s the matter, Lady Vixen? That exaggerated questioning tone.”
“You’re as harsh on me as ever, Shirayuki. …No, it’s just that Ouka replied quickly. Apparently, their《Empress》is already moving. They’re proposing a call with Shinohara, mediated by both principals.”
“…What? Saionji’s already moving… what does that mean?”
“Who knows? It’s not clear, but that’s probably the gist. …Kukku, this is getting interesting.”
With a ferocious grin, the principal returned to the table with her laptop. The screen, now facing us, showed a video chat tool already running, displaying two women. One was likely Ouka’s refined principal. The other was a stunning girl in a uniform with luxurious red hair and resolute ruby eyes—Saionji Sarasa.
“ …Um? Is this connected? Hello, Shinohara, can you hear me?”
The on-screen Saionji, reaching to adjust the volume, tilted her head slightly as she asked. Flashing my usual smile, I spoke into the mic.
“—Yo, Saionji. Been a while.”
“Ah, I hear you. Greetings, Shinohara. …But ‘been a while’ as a greeting? We were face-to-face during《Astral》just days ago.”
“Well, yeah, you’ve got a point. Seeing you daily during the event might’ve thrown off my sense of time.”
“Hmm? Maybe you’re just lonely without me paying attention to you.”
“Nah, if anything, I’m relieved to get a break from you.”
“Oh, then we’re on the same page. …Fufu, well, fine.”
Saying this, Saionji placed her right hand on her hip. The confident, composed pose of the《Empress》. With a faint smile, she looked at me with her ruby eyes.
“Special Duel《DearScript》—it seems you’ve received a request too, haven’t you?”
“Huh? Oh… I see, that’s what’s going on.”
Realizing the situation a beat late, I understood. Not only is Saionji designated as my opponent in the Unique Star Battle, but she’s also a player in《DearScript》. Within the gamebook framework, we’re competing for the “Purple Star.” That’s why our actions aligned so perfectly.
Saionji chuckled on the other side of the screen.
“This feels like a《Duel》request from the person you’re searching for, doesn’t it? They even included a polite greeting message for me. Fufu, good to know I wasn’t forgotten. …But they offered me an enticing reward too, so I’m not planning to let you have it.”
“I’m not expecting you to hand it over either. By the way, what’s the Page 0 order?”
“【Engage in a ‘Unique Star Battle’ with Shinohara Hiroto, the Seven-Star of Eimei】…It’s a bit unnerving, like they see through everything, but it’s definitely convenient. My Unique Star floating indefinitely would worry Ouka’s students.”
“Yeah, true. Eimei’s got people concerned too, so it’s about time I claim that star as mine.”
Though we traded provocative words, Saionji and I were fully aligned on accepting. The Unique Star Battle—when I first saw the order, it didn’t seem realistic, but things fell into place surprisingly smoothly.
I don’t know how much of this the administrator planned.
Either way, there’s no reason to hesitate now.
“Hah… well, go easy on me, Saionji.”
“Oh, that’s a tall order. I’m not one for holding back—especially against you.”
With daring smiles, we raised our terminals across the screen, selecting the order’s acceptance in perfect sync, like a ceremonial pledge.
And so,
The “Unique Star Battle” between Saionji and me—and for me, the special duel《DearScript》to find my childhood friend—officially began.

That night, after boldly exchanging taunts with Saionji,
We gathered in my home’s living room to check the “next page” added to《DearScript》almost immediately after accepting the Page 0 order.
By “we,” I mean myself, Himeji, and one other person—Kagaya-san,《Company》’s electronics expert and a regrettably messy-haired beauty. Since we’d need a strategy meeting, I had her join us from the start.
“…Alright, I’m opening it.”
“Yes. Please, Master.”
With Himeji’s nod, I touched the terminal with slight tension. A paper-flipping animation played, and《DearScript》moved to the next page. Like Page 0, it displayed a few lines of situation text.
It read:
【Unique Star Battle: First Quest】
【Client: Mano Yuuka — Quest Target: Saionji Sarasa】
【Request: I want to confess to Fujishiro Keiya, a Six-Star at Ouka Academy. To do so, I want to obtain the ‘Limited Plate’ from Café de Chocolat, opening this week in the Third Ward.】
【Victory Condition (Saionji Sarasa): At the opening event of Café de Chocolat on May 23, obtain the ‘Limited Plate’ and deliver it to the client.】
【Victory Condition (Shinohara Hiroto): Prevent Saionji Sarasa from achieving her victory condition.】
“…I see, so that’s the format.”
Himeji, who had been peering at the screen, looked up and said this.
“Romance consultation requests are revealed on《DearScript》, and players are assigned respective ‘victory conditions.’ The first to achieve theirs wins the quest… correct?”
“Yup, looks like it. In this case, the《Empress》is the main target of the request, and Hiro-kun’s more of the obstructer… right? Nihihi, it’s the rules, but you’re stuck with the short end of the stick right off the bat.”
“Yeah… why does a romance consultation need an obstructer?”
I shrugged. Taken in isolation, it almost feels like there’s some malice in this《Duel》—but then, the《DearScript》administrator demanded I “clear this《Duel》to meet them,” so they probably see such challenges as “spice.”
By the way, the quests in《DearScript》are based on recent romance consultations sent to an account called《Meteor》on STOC. Research revealed《Meteor》is a semi-legendary request-handling account, rarely responding but perfectly executing tasks when it does. There’s likely some connection between its operators and《DearScript》’s administrator. A note clarifies that clients are informed about the Unique Star Battle and have given permissions.
“There’s also a client message attached… shall we take a look?”
I tapped the item listed at the page’s bottom. A new window opened, and an attached video file auto-played. It showed an unfamiliar girl in Ouka’s uniform—not flashy, but cute enough to be somewhat popular in her class.
She looked at the camera nervously and began speaking.
“Um… is this showing up? I’m doing it as instructed, but I’m not used to this… oh, it’s fine? Great, okay.”
“Let’s try again. …Ahem. I’m Mano Yuuka, a second-year at Ouka Academy.”
“So, I have a crush. Fujishiro Keiya, a guy in my year… do you know him? He’s a Six-Star in Ouka’s top class. Blonde, tons of piercings, sharp eyes—everyone calls him ‘Ouka’s Ultimate Weapon.’”
“Of course, I know I’m nowhere near his league. I’m just a Three-Star, and Fujishiro doesn’t seem interested in girlfriends or anything… Still, I at least want to confess my feelings, but I haven’t had the courage.”
“Then I found it while researching… Café de Chocolat’s magic.”
“Oh, um, it’s not like game or fantasy magic, okay? It’s just that Café de Chocolat has this super-rare limited item—a fancy plate or something—that comes with a message card. Rumor has it, if you confess to your crush while holding it, you’re guaranteed success. It’s a huge deal among girls—someone sold one on Mer○ari for nearly 100,000 yen!”
“And… Café de Chocolat is opening on Academy Island soon. There’s an event on opening day, and winning it gets you that limited item.”
“So when I got a reply from《Meteor》at this timing, I seriously thought it was fate. I don’t believe in magic, but maybe it’ll give me a push.”
“Please—give me the courage to confess to Fujishiro.”
“…I can’t pay 100,000, but I’ll properly thank you later!”
“「「……」」”
The message ended there.
Kagaya-san, arms crossed in her tracksuit, nodded knowingly.
“Mmm… cute. Hiro-kun’s the villain here.”
“Ignore that… it’s not that bad. If I just keep the plate from Saionji, I could get it myself and give it to Mano directly, problem solved.”
“Indeed. That would be the most ideal outcome.”
Himeji, swaying her silver hair, agreed with my suggestion. Raising her clear blue eyes, she continued in her usual cool tone.
“Café de Chocolat’s magic—it’s a famous charm often featured in magazines. Apparently, they sell a legendary cheesecake only at special times, and its box comes with a silver plate. The message engraved on it is ‘Today might be never forgotten day for both of you’… a wish for romantic success.”
“Huh, it’s pretty well-known. Okay, what about this Fujishiro Keiya guy?”
“He’s equally famous. Fujishiro-sama is considered second only to the《Empress》among Ouka’s second-years, yet he rarely appears at public events, earning him the title ‘Ouka’s Hidden Ace.’ He’s in Ouka Academy’s top second-year class. Last year, as a first-year, he reached Five-Star early and was promoted to Six-Star at the start of this year.”
“Got it.”
“His intimidating appearance and aura keep others at bay, earning him the ‘Ouka’s Ultimate Weapon’ nickname, but his《Duel》style is strikingly efficient—reading opponents’ moves with near-sixth-sense precision and using high physical ability to silence them instantly. He’s sharp-minded, but in《Duel》relying on physicality, he’s among the island’s strongest.”
“…Yikes…”
I let slip a genuine reaction to the unexpectedly formidable profile. He’s just “Mano’s crush” for now, so our involvement is indirect, but if I cross paths with him later, he’ll be a serious threat.
As if affirming my reaction, Himeji continued in her clear voice, her hair swaying.
“Indeed. He intimidates not just enemies but allies, which is why he’s rarely included in team events like《Astral》. However, in solo off-island competitions, he consistently delivers strong results. He might be a lone wolf, so to speak. He doesn’t seem to enjoy socializing and is always alone.”
“Huh… then it’s impressive Mano got the nerve to confess to him. Strong and cool, sure, but approaching him takes guts… well, something about him must’ve drawn her.”
Cutting off pointless thoughts, I shook my head slightly.
“Anyway, the task is straightforward. Stop Saionji from getting the ‘limited item’ at next week’s event. I don’t necessarily have to participate, but there’s no reason to sit it out either.”
“Correct. Based on the quest’s wording, Saionji-sama’s victory condition could be met by ‘receiving the item from the event winner,’ so securing the plate yourself, Master, is likely the safest approach.”
“Yeah. …But one thing bothers me.”
Pausing, I scrolled the terminal’s screen to the bottom. There, a single order and its accompanying text were listed. That itself was fine, but the content was the issue.
“Café de Chocolat Opening Event《Rainbow Patisserie》Rule List… The official site hasn’t released the rules yet, so how are they listed here?”
—Exactly.
On《DearScript》’s Page 1, alongside Mano Yuuka’s request, the limited event’s rules were detailed meticulously. I initially brushed it off, but checking Café de Chocolat’s website, it only stated, “Rules will be announced the morning of the event.” Meaning《DearScript》contains unpublished information.
Kagaya-san, who’d been glaring at her tablet, let out a thoughtful groan.
“I tried just now, and with my level of skill, I could hack into Café de Chocolat’s server to pull the rule sheet scheduled for next week. But that’s blatantly illegal. If it wasn’t stolen, the administrator might have higher-level access.”
“Or they’re simply an event insider… perhaps a test player or rule provider. Either way, they’re likely not just a high schooler.”
“……”
I fell silent at their speculations. Indeed, the administrator’s ability to instantly set up the Unique Star Battle between Saionji and me proves they’re no ordinary person. Combined with the gamebook’s nature of issuing successive orders, it feels like we’re constantly dancing in their palm.
But—even so, backing out now isn’t an option.
“…For now, knowing the rules means we can strategize. Let’s get started. The order’s pretty tricky too.”
Glancing at the terminal screen, I said this.
At the bottom, the first order was written as follows:
【Order: During《Rainbow Patisserie》, you must not let anyone outside《DearScript》’s involved parties know you are Shinohara Hiroto.】
♯
—Night.
Today’s strategy meeting wrapped up at a good stopping point. Unlike past events like the《Ward Selection Tournament》or May Inter-District Tournament,《DearScript》has a relatively relaxed schedule. As a public《Duel》, even a special one, I won’t get dragged into other《Duel》during it, so we should tackle each quest carefully.
The rules are confirmed, so next is setting abilities and planning the approach…
Sitting on the bed’s edge, I thought this amid a yawn. The Unique Star Battle’s first quest—Mano Yuuka’s romance consultation. Beyond its content, the first match in a best-of-three is a critical turning point, securing a lead if won. Against someone like Saionji, I need to win this at all costs.
It’s been a while since our first《Duel》, and this is our first proper one-on-one since… huh?
A soft knock interrupted my wandering thoughts. Checking my terminal, it was already midnight. Kagaya-san would be long gone, lounging by now, so only one person came to mind.
“…Himeji? What’s up?”
“Um… Master, may I come in?”
“Of course.”
When I instantly agreed, she dutifully murmured, “Excuse me,” before opening the door with a click. She’d already bathed, wearing not her usual maid outfit but thin pajamas with a cardigan. Seeing Himeji in casual attire is rare, and pajamas are especially devastating—specifically, the chest area’s defenses are alarmingly low.
“…? Master?”
“Oh, nothing.”
Himeji tilted her head curiously as I froze. Waving both hands to brush it off, she seemed satisfied and nodded slightly.
“Good then. Um… Master.”
“Yeah, what is it?”
“…Um… may I sit beside you?”
“Huh?”
Asking in a hesitant whisper with an upward glance, Himeji caught me off guard. When I managed a nod, she bowed, saying, “Thank you,” and slowly approached. Barefoot, she padded to the bed’s edge, turned, and sat beside me.
“Excuse me. …I’m sorry, Master, for visiting your room so late.”
“N-no, that’s fine, but…”
Flustered, I couldn’t read her intentions. What’s going on? Did something happen? I tried to think, but my pounding heart drowned out my focus. Her slight movements wafted a sweet shampoo scent, and her less-guarded outfit left my eyes with nowhere safe to land.
Oblivious to my inner turmoil, Himeji swayed her silver hair.
“Master, I have something I’d like to ask.”
“Something to ask?”
“Yes. This《Duel》—《DearScript》. Its administrator is likely your childhood friend. The important person you moved from the mainland to Academy Island to find.”
“? Yeah, that’s probably right.”
“And she’s a woman.”
“…That’s, uh, well…”
For some reason, Himeji emphasized that part strongly, speaking quietly. Shifting closer, she peered into my eyes with her clear blue gaze.
“But… that’s fine. …No, it’s not fine, but I have enough sense to accept it. However, just one thing—please tell me this. Your goal is to reunite with her, correct? So, if you win《DearScript》and achieve that goal—what then?”
Her voice faltered suddenly. Her expression was strained, almost anxious. Her lips trembled, but no further words came.
“…No. Never mind.”
She gave a faint smile and said displeased.

“~~ ♪”
“She” was humming cheerfully while staring at her terminal’s screen.
《DearScript》. A special《Duel》addressed to her precious “him.” It had been accepted, and the first quest was already underway. The orders’ difficulty should be keeping him busy by now.
“Maybe I was too mean… but it’s fine. Hiroto can definitely clear it.”
She murmured with utter trust. Shinohara Hiroto, the one she cherished, could overcome such challenges with ease. And since they hadn’t seen each other in so long, she wanted him to show off a bit.
“But I won’t go easy on him. A low hurdle’s pointless—obstacles should be big.”
Saying this, she closed the terminal with a cheerful grin. There was no need to interfere further. She’d just wait excitedly for him to reach her.
“…So, work hard and find me properly, okay?”
With an angelic smile that could captivate anyone, she said this.
